Why do you people across the ocean call airplanes "Aeroplanes"?

Connor says that its because it's a plane of aeronautics. But doesn't it make more sense that it's a plane that flies through the air?

Also, since the first successful airplane was invented in the US, I'd say that our name for it is the correct one. >.>

I'd say either one of them are correct and that it doesn't really matter.

Though, in keeping with the trend of IF YOU DIDN'T MAKE IT UP YOU'RE WRONG HURR DURR I'd say "airplane" is correct.

Wikipedia A very reputable source which shall remain unnamed says:  "The spelling "aeroplane" is the older of the two, dating back to the mid-late 19th century."

And it's technically called a "Fixed-wing aircraft" anyway...  D:

Terminology-wise, "aeroplane" is more scientific in its prefix.  The term "hydroplane", for example, describes a similar effect of lift on water; the term "waterplane" sounds stupid in a way.  In fact though, a lot of nautical terms (since "nautical" has its roots as a sailing term, astronaut means "sailor of stars") come from sailing; when you think about it, automobiles and cars were at one time just referred to as horseless carriages.  The names of vehicles either come from the eccentric naming of the inventor, a scientific concept, or a reworking of the name of a previous technology.

Aeroplane is by far more accurate. "Airplane" is actually a derivative by people who don't understand the original term.

And yes, 4sword managed to correctly explain the scientific basis for the name - bear in mind the term "plane" does not refer to the vehicle, but the actual lift action of it - so I won't re-explain.

Oh. That actually makes sense. I'm just gonna keep calling it an airplane or a plane for the purpose of not sounding like a stuck-up perfectionist.

* MetaKirby casts Aero, and then Aeroga

That was fun. On-topic: Although Airplane sounds better, Aeroplane is the correct terminology.

Is it a good thing upon seeing the topic title this exact thought sequence passed through my mind? Literally, exactly like this. Right down to the Aero thing...though I suspect when she goes mmm here is has more to do with the adverts for the chocolate than the chocolate itself ;)

I've not seen that advert before.

But, might I say ... Hmmmm. He seems kinda old.

IMO Airplane sounds like something only a 5 yr old would say.

That advert used to be on British TV a ridiculous amount of times, how could you have not seen it? Seriously, it was like some evil government plan to force us men to be forever reminded of our failures as real men... :(

Of course 'real men' can just bite me, go feminisation of males! Guy-Liner and Manscara for all! Not that I wear any of that stuff, but still...

I say "airplane"...and I spell it "airplane"...but I wish I said things more exactly. I actually stopped today and considered that I never say "excuse me" and always just say "scuze' me".

Considering the accent of Nottingham is based more around slang than emphasis on words and such, I tend to say words in full quite a bit (except for don't, can't and such).

I am also very up-tight about spelling things right. If I ever see someone from Britain spelling "Artefact" with an 'i', I take it upon myself to slap them silly.

Artefact! That's a new one on me. Actually Firefox right now is underlining it red like I spelled it wrong. I'm not British so you don't have to slap me, but I've always used artifact.

This. I have to admit though, I never knew "plane" was the movement of the vehicle and not the vehicle itself.
