Being 18 I'm now legally allowed to buy alcohol here in Britainland.

So the other day I was in the pub and I went to buy everyone a round and they didn't even ID check me.

Anticlimax or what?

Other Discussion / PC World
« on: March 04, 2008, 08:31:21 pm »
It's a UK chain of stores. And yesterday I actually realised just how expensive they are.

I mean - they've always had a reputation a bit of being over priced, but sheesh. Let's start with an example.

I just bought a new graphics card - an nVidia 8600 with 1GB of memory. I paid $110 for it - although I had to pay an extra $30 or so for shipping to the UK. That's about £70 I've paid.

PC World sell a card with the same, nVidia 8600 chip, with just 256mb of memory, and they're charging, with a special 'online discount', £170 excluding shipping!

An even better example is that they charge £25 for a 7-meter ethernet cable. Just across the road from them, B&Q sell ethernet cable at £17 for 100 meters!

I just don't understand how they're still running such a monopoly. What makes it worse is that they have posters all over the place claiming "we won't be beaten on price!" and "Great value!" and all that - everywhere. It's sick. If I present the two examples above to them, they'll say that it isn't the exact same product. No, of course it isn't, it's a vastly better product and at a substantially cheaper price - but do they care?

They're surviving on adverts, that's what it is. Powerful, mind-numbing adverts constantly giving the ignorant public the idea that they're the best. If anyone thinks, "where can I get a such-and-such computer part?" the first thing to come up would PC World - thanks to the name, the propaganda marketing and public ignorance. Most people probably don't even realise B&Q sell ethernet cable. Most people just naturally assume PC World - the PC specialist - will be the best place to buy a graphics card, and yet their top of the range model is outdated, and vastly overpriced.

Just thought I'd throw that out there.

Coding / PHP Question
« on: March 02, 2008, 11:06:49 pm »
I somehow doubt anyone here'll know, but I'm thinking about advanced-ish file upload systems.

My point is, when storing a file it presents obvious problems to just upload it. Normally we rename it to stop scripts running and so on. I want to create a script that handles the uploads in a way that seems to the user that no change whatsoever has happened to the file.

I'm assuming I could do this by visiting a downloading script, which reads the file byte by byte and sends each to the browser - but I'm thinking this will inevitably lead to errors, probably script timeouts, and if done incorrectly memory overloads.

So I guess my question is - is there a better way to do this? is the feeding it through a running php script a terrible idea? is there some simple way to make a folder 'safe' to upload and download any kind of file to using .htaccess?

Also, and hints or tips on ways of doing image previews of multiple sizes would be appreciated. I'm assuming the best way is by using the GD library to create them, and store them in a folder with a size limit, deleting the oldest ones when necessary - so images could be cached by browsers without having to modify headers, but it doesn't take insane amounts of space.

Zelda Projects / [new trailer] Zelda Bomberman Online
« on: October 31, 2007, 01:35:47 pm »
Hell yes. Bomberman, Zelda graphics, online engine.

We've done a lot of work on it since the last update. You can now actually play bomberman, with four people on the other side of the world from each other. The computer-players' AI isn't great (yet) if you're playing it just with yourself, but the main focus is the online play.

Here's footage from the game we played the other day. I'm green, Atrius is red and emkay is blue. Purple is the computer AI. Note that Atrius is across the Atlantic ocean from me, so there's quite a bit of lag.
<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BMpMn0z0Qmk" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BMpMn0z0Qmk</a>

Still work in progress - but the gameplay's insanely fun anyway. The video was actually generated using the connection-log after the match, that was meant to be for debugging. We could even add a 'replay' function to the game, since half an hour's footage at full quality was easily under 1mb.

Soon to come: Zelda items, things like the hookshot, powder keg, roc's feather, and so on, to add to the Zelda feel. We might release a demo before the whole game.
Any suggestions for items to add?

Other Projects / [Completed] The Kousou Arcade
« on: September 24, 2007, 10:17:12 pm »
That's right folks, the Kousou Games' Arcade is back online! The legendary games of the past are alive again, with better graphics, better gameplay and fewer glitches!

The first three games are up, and there's more to come soon.

Asteroids is a new game showing off Atrius' latest example: Bezier curves and anti-aliased lines in Game Maker. Shoot your way through vector-drawn asteroids for as long as you can to get the highscore.
Download Asteroids

Fizzy the dragonfly, aka the-game-so-popular-its-topic-got-locked, returns in untouched form, simply updated to fit the new highscore table system. We also wiped the highscores to give new players a chance, so if you're a Fizzy veteran you'd better start clicking to get back on top.
Download Fizzy the Dragonfly

Zelda: Space Invaders is completely remade, with an almost challenging level of difficulty. Enjoy the animations that fit together, and bad guys that were actually from the same game!
Download Loz: Space Invaders

The highscore system's been completely remade, with a level of security which will at least filter out most of the n00b 'hackers'.

Remember: More games are coming soon - I'll update this topic as they're released.

Zelda Projects / [DEMO] Zelda: Just Beginning
« on: September 05, 2007, 08:01:01 pm »

Kousou Games Presents

The demo has finally arrived.

Windows XP Version: Download (6.07 mb Zipped).
Windows Vista Version: Download (6.50 mb Zipped).

Press F1 to open the settings menu, F4 to go straight to graphics settings, and F3 for controls (supports joypads).

About

The demo has one dungeon, with puzzles, bosses and bad guys, most of the engine is complete and about half of the items are in there. The dungeon won't be in the final game, this is a sort of "prequel" to the main game. There's a special reward for completing it without dying, which I think you'll all like :D Also, a special signature will be awarded to the first person to work out how to get the compass (you can prove you got it by posting a screenshot of the map).

We're offering cameos to the people of the zelda fan site Just Zelda, so if you want one, you'll have to join there.

We don't want to spoil the story too much for everyone, but the game, as the name might suggest, is meant to be the first in the Zelda timeline. You start off as a farmboy wanting to prove to everyone his courage, but as you set off on an adventure you soon discover the truth about the recent battles in the east. And it becomes clear to you that although a war is on the horizon, the chaos is just beginning... and the only one who can save the day is you.

Other Discussion / GBA Homebrew Hardware
« on: August 28, 2007, 08:57:10 pm »
I've been looking for a while for a good place to get the stuff. It's very difficult to find somewhere that sells GBA flash carts (quite a few places say "out of stock").

Believe it or not, I'm not interested in playing roms - the real reason I want to get into GBA homebrew is to be able to play older gameboy games on my micro. And possibly use it as an mp3/movie player.

So... does anyone know where I can get the stuff I need to play GB games and maybe movie files on my GBA? Since the DS came out it's been hard to find GBA stuff.

Something that caught my eye was a GBA cart with an SD card reader in it... that'd be good if it works. Anyone have any recommendations?

Other Discussion / I got tripple monitors!
« on: August 11, 2007, 09:35:35 am »
Okay, I might not be the first person in the world, but I don't know anyone else here who has THREE monitors plugged into one computer.

WOOO

I was going to get three 19", but they were too expensive. So I got three 17" acer ones (shudder) as they were on offer, £99 each. And if anyone says "Wow, $600 on monitors??", over here, it's a good price >_>

Next challenge: get a decent PCI graphics card. Like this, I've got a really old one handling one monitor, and the PCI-ex 256mb one handling the other two, so if you drag a game onto the other monitor, it drops its FPS from >400 to about 4.

Characters / Tommy-Gun T
« on: July 12, 2007, 10:54:05 pm »
Two years ago, the much appraised hero T was struck down by a retarded penguin. Unable to believe that people would find a "cute" penguin cooler than him, he stormed out in a girly rage. Then he got hit by a bus and fell into a mysterious coma and woke up 18 months later with amnesia. All he had was a photo of the penguin that struck him down.

Under the delusion that he is a 1930s fedora wearing tommy-gun wielding maniac, he sets out to destroy the penguin that ruined his previous entry to the character competition.

He is... Tommy-Gun T.

>_> Yes, I was VERY pushed for time. YOU think of a better name.

Other Discussion / Free DVD burning software?
« on: July 08, 2007, 10:15:38 pm »
My laptop came with a bunch of applications for making DVDs, including something called "InterVideo WinDVD Creator 2", which should be great. Except, it makes you re-encode the video before writing, which aside from taking ages, doesn't seem to do a very good job. I assume it's turning it into high bitrate crap or something.

All I want to do is take an mpeg-2 file that's about 2gb big and burn it to DVD, playable in a dvd player. I don't care about fancy authoring and menus and stuff. Problem is, the mpeg file is around three hours long, and so when encoded by WinDVD Creator it doesn't fit on the disk.

So, any suggestions? Any free software that'll burn the movie to dvd at the bitrate / compression it's already at?

Other Projects / [Completed] Seamless Texture Generator
« on: March 28, 2007, 09:35:56 pm »
http://www.kousougames.co.uk/data/downloads/counter.php?file=texGen

This program turns normal images into seamless, tileable textures by blurring it with its own edges. The blurring is dependant on the blend mask, which is a bitmap gradient. You can make your own or whatever, it can be any size. A few are included to get you started.

From to

Run the program, select your source image, select your mask (you can try out different ones for different effects), enter the width and height of the original image and you're done.

This program was written in GM6.1 in ten minutes by mitxela for Kousou Games.

Feedback / Programming section
« on: March 25, 2007, 10:03:04 pm »
I'm aware it's not the most lively board ever, but I still think it needs clearing up.

- Requests should not be in the Tutorials and Examples section. That's what the main bit's for. Tutorials and Examples should be for tutorials and examples.
- The engines index needs clearing up. The hosting on friderwaves is fine, but it's not been updated in so long it's pathetic having it there. It should be just a good list of sites featuring examples.

I think that's it.

I started ripping some sounds and stuff from TP. Here's what I've done so far: http://www.kousougames.co.uk/data/wavs/ZeldaTPsfx1.zip

I would've ripped more but there's so much to rip I wasn't sure what to do next. Any requests? (There's no guarantee I'll have time to rip anything more at all though)

Discussion / Getting Gameplay Right
« on: January 21, 2007, 08:47:08 pm »
Just wrote this article here: http://www.kousougames.co.uk/articles/other/What_Gameplay_Means.php

I've been thinking about the idea for a while, and it seems to apply to all my favorite games. It might be an idea to keep in mind when making your won fangames... although probably a later thought, perfecting after you've finished the engine. Meh.

For those who don't want to visit my site (damn you!) here's the article:

What gameplay really means...
I???m aware that this is probably more relevant to professional game developers as opposed to fan game makers, but I???m writing it anyway.

I???d like to explore ??? and discover ??? what really makes a game worth playing. What makes us enjoy it. What makes us want to play on... you get the message. I think we can safely say that people like snazzy graphics and lovely music, but that???s nothing to do with the actual gameplay. What I???m talking about it more simple than that. I???m talking about the element of control.

Puzzle games don???t have this kind of gameplay, they only have the satisfaction of solving them. But ??? I ask you ??? what makes The Sims addictive? There???s no action, no puzzle solving, not much to complete (as such), no bad guys, and on the whole no story line.

It???s because of the unique gameplay, you say. What???s great about it? What???s different about it? When you break it down, all you???re doing is controlling a character. Building a world. Controlling another character. Ahh. Control.

It???s control that makes walking Link up to a door and opening it yourself more fun than watching Link walk up to it and open it himself. That little sway you make when you move him ??? you are doing that. You are proving to yourself, one more time, that you are controlling him. You???re not watching a movie. Watching a movie isn???t a game. You???re not controlling what???s happening.

I know I???m stating the obvious, but I think a lot of people these days are missing that.

If you drain the feeling of control, to me, you???re draining the gameplay. You need to always remind the player that they are in control.

Let???s take an example. I play a game, where I control a little boy in a green tunic with a sword. Great! I tell him to walk around, and he walks around. But then, what happens when I try to walk through a wall?

A lot of people now think that it???s better, more realistic, to make him not do it. Not move up to the wall where one would graze one???s eyebrows. Stop before then. Walk towards the wall but slow down and stop movement a foot before. I tell the character to move into it, and he does nothing. Nothing. That???s my control, gone. I hate that.

It???s not as realistic, it???s not as beautiful to untrained eyes, but to make him walk completely into the wall so there???s barely a pixel between them is good. It???s great. It gives me once more, that feeling of control. To see him continuously swing his legs trying to get through ??? he???s doing what I say. He???ll never make it, but he has no free will. He???ll keep on trying until I tell him not to. There???s no invisible boundary, just what I see. Just where my mind would make him stop. Where I???d expect him to stop. I have the control eternally, and that???s what matters.

Hearing that keeping an animation going, or moving a boundary back a little, can supposedly increase the fun may be a little odd. Surely it???s a backwards step. But from my experience, from what I enjoy, that???s what adds the little touch that a movie can???t.

That???s what made Ocarina of Time so great when I first played it. The crisp, bold colours where great, but what mattered was the way he moved. He moved like one of us would. The place between movie and gameplay was perfectly met. You were only forced to stop when there really, really was no way to get passed. If you ran into a fence, you could make him climb over. If there were vines, you could climb them. If there was water you could swim and dive ??? it was all what you wanted. And, of course, only when you wanted.
I think that then, Nintendo realised this. That???s why they hit the jackpot ??? the ultimate advance in the understanding of gameplay ever ??? the control increases as you get better. As you play more. The areas are more exploreable, you can move faster and more control is given. That???s why I love Ocarina of Time.

Of course, it???d be horrid if you had to re-learn the techniques from scratch, that???s why Majora???s Mask started so well ??? all the movement was identical, but with more control. More styles to jump. More forms to play in. All of it was increasing the control.

They hadn???t forgotten this is Wind Waker. They made a replay allow you to whiz through all the stuff you learnt the time before ??? nearly all techniques were taught to you, not the character. You could, then, do them from the very start if you knew how.

For some reason they decided to change that in later games.

This isn???t all about whether or not you can bang your head on a wall. There???s more to it than that ??? but I just wanted to remind everyone what playing a game really means. It???s a game. Not a book ??? not a song ??? not a movie ??? a game. If you get the combination right, you???ll succeed.

~ mitxela

So... discuss? Do you prefer to have someone slow down and never reach the wall when you walk into it? Do you agree with what I've said?

Adverts & Recruitment / Kousou Games v2
« on: January 20, 2007, 12:31:31 am »
New layout and much easier to update for staff. Lots of new stuff added. I posted it here because I genuinely feel it was a project, not just a revamp of an old website. And if you think this is advertising, which aparently is now not allowed, think of this as the comments-on-the-layout-and-stuff topic, not a come-to-my-site topic.

Back to the main point: New theme. Metallic. Took a while. Sorta like this:

What d'y'all think? It was also a challenge of some sorts to skin the Invisionfree forum to look like the main site...

Entertainment / Wii broke it
« on: December 12, 2006, 05:43:40 pm »
Well, not me personally. Some guys took a wii apart:
http://www.popsci.com/popsci/whatsnew/2526081bfbcfe010vgnvcm1000004eecbccdrcrd.html

It's interesting how small the circuits are, considering the size of computer motherboard or whatever. And if things get smaller as they always do (notice how packed the DS was compared to the DS light). Wonder how big the Wii-lite will be? (not that I'd like them to make one... >_<)
