Apparently some time ago, it was announced that Link's Awakening DX will be released on the 3DS's Virtual Console. It seems to get a nifty 3D feature, although I can't really imagine what that would be, considering Nintendo already gives OOT a 3D update and they love to do emulation. What do you guys think.

Rather than ports, start using engines to remake games. Link's Awakening in PH/ST's engine would be enjoyable. Playing Link's awakening again in GB style on a hand held I spent like presumably $150 on would not.

Probably an emulator that monitors certain variables like something's height or Y-position and draws those sprites in 3D.

Not many controls to change on a gameboy game. Just sayin'. If they added touchscreen stuff, they'd basically ruin the game.

Yeah I just think for a visual effect 3D 8-bit sprites would be neato. I hate playing games without buttons. ::)

ya, im so use to moving with a joy stick or D-pad, when I played zelda PH,  I got bored with using the touch screen to move...  They might give the player an option to change how to move around in game or something.

I seriously doubt they will change the game controls. With PH and ST the touchscreen controls work because the games were developed with it. LA is not. If the 3D effect is something like that the sprites will popup like those popup books when you open them. That would be cool. Like Paper Mario in a Zelda game.  :P

I know you guys might be thinking that sounds like a good idea, but it probably wouldn't work. Too often are sprites used as auxiliary tiles to add additional color depth, especially in GBC games. A depth option for sprites would make the game look screwed up if it's being emulated. They would have to rewrite the game for it to work.

Mammy, if they are really adding a 3D feature. And that is the big IF. Then it is no longer a simple emulation. They are altering the game. And when they are spending time on programming the 3D effect then they at least would make it look decent, if not good. I doubt that when the 3D is added it would look screwed. But I can't tell for sure, because I don't really know what Nintendo's plans are. All we can do speculate on what information is given.

Not true in the least bit. The beauty of emulation is being able to change the way your rendering system interprets the games drawing commands. What has been mentioned in here involves custom rendering interpretations to the game based on sprites vs tiles. For that to look good, the game would have to be rewritten to avoid using sprites as auxiliary tiles.

Basically; if you can interpret the difference between a BG layer and a Sprite layer (which btw the emulator has to do for GB games), you can render them differently. Saying you have to alter the game for an effect is like saying "the game is altered when I turn off the sprite layer in Visual Boy Advance!". It's just not true.

I guess something got lost in translation. Zelda Dungeon's article reads like that the game is actually altered with a 3D feature and not the emulator. However when looking something further at the source article which I missed earlier. It reads that every Virtual Console game will have it this 3D feature. That would suggest that the 3D is in the emulator. It might look screwed, it might look good. What the 3D really will be we don't know yet.

Time will tell. And I am interested to see what it will be, but I am not going to get my hopes up or down.

We've been hoping for it for a long time, and now it's been confirmed: the Nintendo 3DS has a Virtual Console service that lets you download classic handheld games.

At a press conference held today, Satoru Iwata announced that the 3DS Virtual Console service will allow gamers to download and play vintage Game Boy and Game Boy Color games, as well as offering the ability to download other Nintendo classics and play them in an all-new 3D mode.

As part of a video montage shown at the conference, it was confirmed that Super Mario Land and The Legend Of Zelda: Link's Awakening would be two of the games coming to the 3DS Virtual Console.

Sounds good to us!

its clear to me that the 3d feature will be nothing more than a "puppetshow" effect on the game that the layer up looks more forward to the player and the downlayers farther away...

Sorry to be a bit off-topic, but I really hope Virtual Boy games could be emulated.  Wario Land is classic.  Red Alarm was quite fun to me.  Galatic Pinball was fun too.  I still have my VB, but the left screens begin to go all "snowy" and broken lines about 10 seconds after starting any game which leads me to believe...It broke sitting in the basement too long.

I also wanna see some GameGear games for 3DS as well.  Some GG Shinobi, Shining Force, and Outrun: Europa.

It's like the DS Pokémon games.    I'd play that.

I would too, but rather than cradle the idea, Nintendo C&D'd that one, as well as
