Entertainment / PS3 and PSP Security Compromised
« on: January 03, 2011, 05:40:37 am »
<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LuIlbmn-4A4" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LuIlbmn-4A4</a>

You've probably seen this, but the PS3's security system (against running unsigned code) has been rendered useless because due to a massive oversight, anyone can now sign their own code and run it on the PS3 because the keys to sign the code have been leaked.. However, yesterday (or earlier today, since I haven't gone to bed yet) similar keys for the PSP were found in the PS3 firmware. So basically, the PS3 and PSP are cracked wide open. This is unfixable by a firmware update because any firmware update can now be decrypted to acquire any new keys.
I'm pretty glad about this. It'll be awesome to be able to run anything I want without dealing with incompatibility issues or extra hoops to jump through (like running the Patapon 2 demo exploit every time I turn on my PSP) Piracy will be a big issue, but the PSP is about to be replaced anyway and PS3 games, though piratable, aren't as easy to pirate as PSP games because of their size.

Project of the Month - April 2009

The Legend of Zelda: Sword of Divination

Forum Topic | Site Page

Developer: MG-Zero
Language: C++
First Posted: December 17th, 2006
Last Update: April 14th, 2009

From a quick glance at the WIP section, you should notice that many fan-games are made using Game Maker. Game Maker is the most popular game development tool because of its ease of use and decreased difficulty compared to other languages. Fan-games in other languages are considered rare.

This month's Project of the Month defies conformity because it utilizes C++, and a work-in-progress custom engine called the Harvest Engine that is eventually going to be released as open source. Progress is steady and promising, with a creative storyline and unique controls. That is why MG-Zero's project is April's Project of the Month.

Game Story/Plot

Hyrule, the land of the Gods, home of the Master Sword and the world that the Sacred Realm resides in.  It's here that many battles have taken place, where countless times blood has been shed in the name of the Golden Power.  It's in this world that the Hero's legacy lives on the breath of the Wind and in the Legends deep within its temples.  But this Legend doesn't tell of Hyrule, but a country not far from its borders.  A country that's roamed by humans, dragons and other creatures alike called Doragon.  But unlike Hyrule, this country cannot defend against evil.  It houses no hero to combat the corrupt empire that towers over it.  It's the 10th year since the empire grew evil and only now does a hero show, a dormant hero from the land of the Gods.

Developer Q & A

Q. How was it like coding your own engine?

A. It's difficult at times and certainly frustrating.  Just recently the entire solution for the engine was corrupt for some reason.  Luckily I was able to recover all the code and get it into a new solution.  It has its' ups and downs but it gives you a sense of pride when you manage to get something like this working.  Overall, I enjoy it.

Q. Did you make the engine solely for Zelda games? or is it adaptable?

A.Nope, it's completely adaptable.  Zelda is just what I decided to use it first for.

Q. Are you planning on releasing the engine for use?

A. Absolutely, I'll be open sourcing it when it's more functional.  I don't plan on implementing a scripting language however, so you'll have to work directly with the C++ code.

Q. How often do you work on the game?

A. Just about every day.

Q. How did the name "Harvest" come to mind?

A. Originally I had a game planned called Dark Harvest that I had
wanted to build this for, so the name came from that.  However, my programming knowledge at the time was limited and I wasn't
capable of what I wanted to do with the game.  You just might see that game happen at some point, though!

Q. When do you expect that you will be finished with the basic engine?

A. Soon, I hope.  I've already gotten a lot of things done from graphics to sounds to collisions.  Building tools and fileformats to
work with the engine may take me some time, though.

Q. Are there any special items that you are planning?

A. Oh yea, I've got lots of those.  For example, you've all seen the
Forces of Power from the Game Maker demos which allow you to
utilize gravity, electromagnetism and teleportation.  Now imagine adding the property of electromagnetism to your arrows.  You could, say, put on your iron boots and launch yourself across the room by firing one of these arrows.  I have many things like this planned for other items in the game.

Q. Why is it that over the course of development your game has gone through many styles?

A. Well, it started in LttP Style, but at this point, that style is really getting old and kind of boring.  I switched over to ZFGC style for a time, but it wasn't developed enough for this and I lack the spriting skills to create what I need.  So, it looks like from here
on out, it's going to stay in MC style.

Q. Have the computer science classes you've taken at your university helped you with your project?

A. In terms of programming, very little.  I'm completely self taught when it comes to programming ever since my Game Maker days back some 6 or 7 years ago.  I've learned a few new tricks here and there, but nothing mind boggling that I didn't know already.  General game development however, I've learned a bunch of for writing up the design doc to keep everything organized.

Q. How difficult has it been to overcome the bugs that emerge as you code your project?

A. Hah, it never fails that when I implement something new, I get 50 million errors along with it.  There's always that NULL pointer in there that ends up blowing up the whole program.  However, the VC++2008 debugger has proved VERY effective in tracking down these problems and has been making them very easy to fix.  I've also run into a lot of memory leaks, usually from forgetting to free up memory in functions.  In the beginning, the program was a memory time bomb because of this haha.  Among other things, I've had graphical bugs, Text box issues, player issues, collision problems, etc.   Overall though, there hasn't been anything that I haven't been able to fix.

Probably not - the honest truth is that I have been busy with other things including the Project of the Month, user/staff rank images, working with SMF 2.0 for a future revamp of the forum, working with an engine concept for the upcoming community project, and schoolwork. April Fool's hasn't meant that much to me anyway since EGM stopped being published.

[...]The forest used to be the courtyard for the castle. In an act of love, the King and Queen each planted a tree to grow with their kingdom. You'll get the Master sword from a quest dealing with the two trees hence the Triforce symbol on each. In an act of rebellion ten years ago, a prince of Hyrule cut down one of the ancient trees causing an uproar throughout the kingdom. In turn, things became hostile between races and the general glow of Hyrule began to fade. The forest slowly began dying as the fight continued as did any other part of the land which was far from the peace within the castle walls. The Kokiri fled closer and closer to the castle but those left behind turned to Moblins and live in the dead section that's orange. Given at the correct resolution for the games (28.34 pxl/in), so please don't complain about the size.

And yes, this is the sheet that I've been working on at TSR, in case any of you hang out there.

Now, I know that not every sprite is actually in TMC style - in fact, you'll notice that there are revamps and even SD'd sprites in there... But this is as close as I could make it. Are there any suggestions, anything that I've missed?

Oh, and speaking of which... I'll need a few things to finish the sheet (the Wind Waker section, actually). If anyone can get me screenshots or well-detailed descriptions (or even better, ♪ TMC-style spri-ites! ♫) of the Trading Sequence items from TWW, that would be very much appreciated (and you'll be thanked in the ♪ credits! ♫). So, thanks ahead of time.
And I'll be sure to post here in case there're any more updates to the sheet. Stay tuned!

Could there possibly be a theme of ZFGC in wide-screen format? I don't even know if this is possible, but I'll suggest it anyway. I have a 1680 x 1050 resolution computer, and there's so much space that could be used off to the side. Could this space be utilized?

Quote
An “expressionless” seven-year-old boy broke into a zoo, bludgeoned to death giant lizards and fed them – and other live animals - to a crocodile named Terry in Outback Australia this week.

Zookeepers were horrified when they arrived at work on Wednesday morning to see Terry, an 11-foot long saltwater crocodile, feasting on his fellow showcase reptilians at the Alice Springs Reptile Centre in the Northern Territory.

At first they thought the animals, including the zoo’s favourite, metre-long, 20-year-old goanna, had escaped from their outdoor pens and accidentally become breakfast for Terry - the local zoo’s prize attraction.

But further investigation uncovered CCTV footage of the local boy’s horrific 35-minute killing spree which began when he scaled the fence of the zoo, located in the centre of Alice Springs, a popular tourist destination town in central Australia, just before 8am on Wednesday morning.

Wow. And the kid isn't old enough to be arrested, taken to court, or anything. What a !@#$% for the zoo. : /

They're not meat, but they're shaped like animals. They're not made from animal products, but they look like animals and you eat them. Perhaps? Perhaps not? This is the top issue on ZFGC, the biggest drama ever to be seen on an incarnation of ZFGC. And now, you, random ZFGC member/mod/admin/Tet/Behemoth, can decide.

Entertainment / Nintendo Press Conference Summary
« on: July 15, 2008, 04:30:59 pm »
Here's a list of everything that was related to us at the conference:

-Shaun White Snowboarding uses the balance board. (Lol at the chick in the beginning saying "Would you please welcome me in joining..." XD)
-The teams of Mario and Zelda are also working on other games (Wii !@#$%)
-ANIMAL CROSSING: CITY FOLK! Not only is the ONLINE MULTIPLAYER WHERE 4 PEOPLE CAN FIT IN ONE HOUSE, but THERE IS VOICE CHAT USING A NEW SENSOR BAR MIC! You can also send letters to other towns, WITH PICTURES. But there's a whole new world. You can travel to a city where you can visit places like Harriet's Salon where you can WEAR A MASK OF YOUR MII, and go to Gracie's fashion design shop, and more! There's also a thing which strangely looks like the Mac ribbon thing at the bottom where you pull up items, patterns, friend codes, and more.
-Rayman TV: Raving Rabbids looks like the same !@#$% but with the balance board.
-Call of Duty World At War looks samey, uses the Zapper.
-Star Wars: Clone Wars uses light saber battles. Not much shown. Graphics same as cartoon series.
-Guitar Hero: On Tour Decades is coming soon. Has weird song sharing thing between versions, no idea how this works, probably will make custom songs easier.
-Spore Creatures kinda looks like a dumbed down PC version, focuses more on WAN creature sharing and creating.
-Grand Theft Auto: China Town Wars comes to the DS.
-DS is being tested with airlines to see if it can be used as a map and flight info station.
-Seattle is trying to use the DS also as a map.
-Cooking Navi coming the the US.
-Sequel to Wii Sports, Wii Sports Resort coming out, comes with jacket and MotionPlus. The !@#$% Cammey or something plays a disc tossing game with a dog, talks to it, may mean Wiispeak interaction. Reggie plays jet ski minigame using nunchuk and Wii MotionPlus as a handlebar. Some other dude test wood chopping game, which means the new Zelda could have awesome swordplay. It might still be revealed, just you wait. Wait, just now, Reggie and !@#$% Cammey has a cool, accurate sword fight. It looks great. Spring 2009.
-Wii MotionPlus is cool, it actually works great.
-WiiMusic was shown. The demo was this dude named Robbie Drums playing the drums, but I bet it'll do more like that last time is was shown as a conductor. Shigeru also played the sax... it looks hard, though. It used one wiimote pointed at his mouth. He had people playing backup behind him, but I'm sure it's just to make it look cool. It might all just be a recorded demo. Whatever. Shigeru still can't speak english. I mean, really, some dude translated for him. He showed off the sax, the guitar, the piano, the violin, and taiko drum... I think. It was a big barrel drum. The game features music lessons. Great, more brain training. Shigeru acknowledged the orcherstra was bad 2 years ago, so he improved it. It will record videos of the performances, maybe to the SD card. He just said it was a music video. The game features 4 players. Robbie, Shigeru, Denise, and some other guy... they played the Super Mario Bros Overworld, of course. It was good for a fake live performance (by that I mean that it was simulated in a videya gaem)

It looks like it's over, there's just a summary now.
