Title: Brawl: Addictive/10
Post by: Kyubi on June 29, 2008, 04:24:15 am
I've stayed up till 5:23am playing just the Home Run Contest. Jesus.

Also, I beat 500 metres with Pikachu. Impressive, no? (this is probably what had me playing so long)

Remember when it came out though, we let you have your "OMG this is the coolest thing ever!!!" spastic brawl posting back then, now it's out here, it's our turn. You Americans still posted a hell of a lot, even though you aren't playing it anymore, we get to do that, then eventually find it's boring.

I don't remember ever being like that with Brawl. Just before it came out when Sakurai was making amazing updates to his site.

I agree with Vandavil. Honestly, you stupid Americans, stfu or I'll rape your country with Toon Link's sword-wielding awesomeness, as well as Yoshi's rockin' egg rolling abilities and a little bit of Sonic on the side.

I love Brawl. I'm 75% through the Subspace Emissary and I can't say I've been bored at all. I really don't understand where all the complaints are coming from. "Boring", "repetitive" etc. The cutscenes are action-packed and downright excellent, I love the way they portrays Lucas. I'm getting a lot more than I expected out of the gameplay, I thought it was just going to be an extended Adventure mode from Melee, but really I'm getting so much more out of it. Sure, it's not ace platformer, but this is an 8-hour game within a game already brimming with a kajillion features. The boss fights are great, I've been playing through the whole game co-operatively with my friend and we both think it rocks. It's the Nintendo movie, if there ever was one.

Oh, and the music. Goddamn, the music. HAL Laboratories must have an insane soloist, there's so many awesome songs. Sonic Booooom Sonic Booooom Sonic Booooom save the planet from destruction! My god, how awesome.

All I've heard is whine, whine, whine from the American gamers. Honestly, none of you deserve this brilliant game.

Until WHAT sinks in? What is so horrible about this game? Do you get a screen saying all of you characters and stages have been reduced to 8-bit pixels and the music is just the same song by Linkin Park played over and over? Really, what is so wrong?
Title: Re: Brawl: Addictive/10
Post by: Pyru on June 29, 2008, 09:38:09 am
I don't care. Not playing SSE at all, so from my perspective, this is just Melee, with more characters, stages and features, and that's all I really wanted from the game anyway.

Did anyone !@#$% when Tekken 5 was just Tekken 4 with new characters? How about Soul Calibur III compared to SCII?

Brawl is an even better improvement from those two, though: new items and stages refresh things. Though I'm a bit annoyed with Smash Balls and Dragoon parts - about 40% of all fights end with Dragoon, and about 30% of fights with Ike end with Great Aether. :/

Smash Bros has always been pretty average when played alone, but I think the SSE is the most fun part of playing SSBB alone.
Although the homerun contest is fun too.

And yeah, I'm seconding that Americans need to shut the !@#$% up, I don't recall a single topic where everyone still waiting for a game told all american users to shut up about whatever.
Guess what, I've already finished Sunday the 29th of June 2008, don't get your hopes up you trolling american assholes, it was a pretty repetitive day.

!@#$% LOL.

I'm going to have to echo most other PAL players and say that Brawl is freaking awesome. I haven't played too much SSE, as me and my brother are going through it together, and he's usually on his computer playing WoW and such. I'm having a hell of a lot of fun with the stage builder though. I think my favourite one I've made so far is the one which is mostly springs, with walls, a few platforms, and some spikes down the bottom. Playing that stage with Ike or Marth is probably one of the best experiences I've ever had with SSB. So much fun.

So yeah, all you guys that got the game months ago can shut up. We had to put up with most of you gushing over how awesome Brawl is, so why can't we do the same now?

Brawl is indeed awesome! I played in a few days 17 hours Brawl! :o Yeah playing online has some issue's but it isn't that bad. I had a bit lag online, but it wasn't really bothering me. Although it made me wonder why Mariokart Wii plays flawless online with 12 players and brawl having lag with just 4 players?... Comparing it with the rest of the game it doesn't matter. I had a friend come over yesterday and we played almost 6 hours straight Brawl! 90% of all the the time we where playing the SSE co-op! It was hilarious! And the other 10% I was beating the !@#$% out of my friend with Pokémon Trainer! :) I really like the Pokémon trainer, and I never thought it would play so well with him. I actually never expected him to be a playable character in the first place... XD Just like Olimar with his pikmins. I know for sure that I will unlock the 100 hours of playing Brawl achievement. :D

I'd like to say that I'm an American that doesn't mind Europe writing that same exact thing we (or rather, other Americans) did back it came out here in America. (Specially since since Europeans get their games so friggin' late! What in the world? Why can't Europe just use NTSC instead of PAL? I say Europeans rally in front of Parliament or whatever center of government and protest! ...Oh yeah, and Europe's rating system requires the raters to play through the game in its entirety, am I correct?)

I'm of the mind that every country deserves its own piece of the pie.

...I'm also of the mind that Swiftu should be put on a leash and be let loose only when we choose.

The Subspace Emissary is alot of fun if you play it with someone else. Heck, neither my sister or I played it alone. We'd always wait until either of us was free to play it together.

I loved the ending too, although I hated not knowing how to dodge the final boss's super attack. (Too lazy to use spoil tags)

I love Toon Link too! If you play around with his colors, you can play as "classic" Link, y'know? :D

I've managed to lay claim to characters and colours amongst my friends! So far I have
Dark Toon Link (the red eyes are so cute *squeee*...woah, everything just went all dizzy for a minute there...)
Pink (Clown) Meta Knight.

I aim to claim Wolf as well, and shall aim to unlock him tomorrow!

In SSE, they just kinda...through him in there didn't they?
I mean, all the other characters had some reason for being there, their homes attacked etc, but Sonic just kinda...appeared out of nowhere. It was like, okay, time to fight this guy and...what was that blue thing?
Oh...it's sonic. Erm...Hi? Where did you come from? Don't feel like explaining things, huh? I see. Well, oh well, the story of this game I was actually following is just weird anyway...but still, it was making sense until...I guess...His home must have been attacked and he got sucked into Subspace or something...maybe? I dunno. He just kind of...appeared on me.

I find Brawl 10 times better than Melee for sure. I used to like Melee a lot but it seems to plain and boring. I could try to play it again and I'd just be bored as !@#$%. Smash Bros. on N64 seems more addicting than Melee due to some of the awesome stages in the game. Melee is just a glitch-fest and I got bored of the multiplayer once Brawl was getting closer.

I still play Brawl today and I'm a Canadian, not an American. Even though the game has been out for some months here in North American, the game is still addicting and fun to play. The Subspace Emissary may be a bit boring if you play it straight. I find if you just play a little bit at a time, then you can still have fun. My brother and I unlocked most of the characters before we played through the subspace due to the fact that it's a Smash Bros. game and it's more fun unlocking characters the old fashion way.

If any of you guys wanna play Brawl with me, give me a PM and your Friend Code and I'll add you up. Hoffy, I still haven't added you yet.

I didnt like how sonic was in SSE. He should have had as much back story as the rest, even Snake was in it more and he was also third party. I think master hand should have been the one to break Tabuu so you could fight him. Or something like that.

And on other things, I've unlocked everyone, I got Toon Link, Wolf and Jigglypuff through SSE. I use Link in his normal colours, toon link in classic colours and Pit in green.

The ending of SSE should have come with a warning: May give you the sudden desire to shout out "Deus Ex Machina", even if you don't understand what it means, that is perfectly normal.

Personally, any game that has a creation mode (character creation, stage creation, etc) is never boring. Brawl will always be fun to me. Even though I don't own it. Also,
God in the machine; are you talking about the Ancient Minister being R.O.B.? Also, Kirby through the cannon. Awesome or not?
Quote from: Wikipedia
A deus ex machina (Latin IPA: [ˈdeːus eks ˈmaːkʰina] (literally "god out of a machine") is an improbable contrivance in a story. The phrase describes an artificial, or improbable, character, device, or event introduced suddenly in a work of fiction or drama to resolve a situation or untangle a plot (such as an angel suddenly appearing to solve problems, or the entire story having been just a dream one of the characters was having).

Sonic seemed to do that just nicely. Oh noes,

Yes, I have to agree that Snake is awesome. I only unlocked him yesterday, and he kicks all kinds of ass.

Shadow Moses isn't that cool of a stage though. It's not bad.
Title: Re: Brawl: Addictive/10
Post by: 4Sword on June 30, 2008, 06:07:55 am
Shadow Moses is alright, but it gets boring when the Metal Gears do not break out.  There are plenty of song selections for the stage though, so it is one I play on quite a bit.  I dislike when I am playing online and someone decides to choose it and I am Snake because then everyone thinks that I picked it and then for some reason they gang up on me.  I am a pretty good Snake player so this attention does not daunt me.  Snake is an awesome character; one of most glitchy and exploitive too.
Title: Re: Brawl: Addictive/10
Post by: Hoffy on June 30, 2008, 06:32:30 am
Snake wasn't quite as good as I had hoped. It kind of bothers me how his A-across (with the rocket launcher) feels more like an A-down. He's a little awkward, but not bad. Sonic is excellent, though. And his stage is too.
Title: Re: Brawl: Addictive/10
Post by: 4Sword on June 30, 2008, 06:43:15 am
The side-smash with Snake is really only good if you can be opportunistic, you are edge-guarding, or you are sliding on ice as that increases its range and often catches your opponents off-guard.  I never really liked Sonic.  He is easy to predict really.  The stage was also a let-down in that it was so small.  Really, they could have made it bigger or had it like they did with Castle Seige where you faded to other locations.  They could have even used "chaos control" as the whole excuse for it happening.  The lack of the Flying Battery Zone from Sonic 3 or Sonic and Knuckles (it was supposed to be only one game) level-type scheme or music really let me down.

Brawl is okay, but I haven't touched it in a few months. And yes, I am United Statesian. I hate that the point is to kill by knocking people long distances... why couldn't there be heath? And yeah, I know about Stamina mode, but I can't always play in Stamina mode. I'd rather play Soul Calibur.
Title: Re: Brawl: Addictive/10

I personally like Link in this game. He's just easier to use and his attacks are much better. In Melee, I couldn't use him at all, so I stuck with Dr. Mario. Lucas is also a good choice. His attacks can be a bit annoying if you are the one getting hit but he's good to use. Snake is awesome. I finally figured out how to do the Mortal Shell trick and it's quite useful. I guess some other good choices would be Fox, Ike, Mr. Game & Watch, Ganondorf, Toon Link, Jigglypuff (seriously). That's about it.

And what's up with Meta-Knight? Honestly, you tap A once and you get a friggin' storm of sword slashes, you tab once and you get a massive cyclone that can move around the stage.

Talk about OP.

I'm still going through the Subspace. The Great Maze is proving to be quite long, but I don't mind it nonetheless. I mean, it's not the highlight of the singleplayer experience, but I've experienced worse dungeons in my time.

I like Shadow Moses, the Yoshi one (Story?), Lylat Cruise, and Final Destination. Battlefield as well.

I just can't stand New Pork City. It drives me nuts on classic mode, BEAT ALL THE TINY LUCAS'S WITHIN 5 MINUTES WHEN IT TAKES 4 MINUTES TO CATCH THE FRIGGING THINGS.

My favourite stage? I like all of them.

But if I had to choose I guess I would say Pirate Ship, because it was exactly what I wanted for a stage before I even knew it existed. And I also like Final Destination, Norfair, 75m and Lylat Cruise.

Here is how a typical fight with me against one Level 9 PC goes:
5-5
We fight until both are in high %s.
I get it in the air and smack it straight down and out.
5-4.
It smacks me a few more times until I fly up and out.
4-4.
We repeat this a few times, until it becomes
2-1.
The final smash finally appears, we both scramble towards it and after knocking the PC away from it, I hit it several times. It flies away from me and TOWARDS the PC.
The PC jumps up, hits it once and gets the final smash.
The PC uses the Final Smash.
It knocks me out of the map.
1-1
By now he's on like 20% and I'm on 0%. what follows is essentially me desperately smacking the PC around trying to get it out. 9 times out of 10, I eventually succeed, usually by a hairs breath.

Level 9 PC's are the only ones I ever seem to have trouble with, even as Wolf and Meta Knight (as well as Toon Link), I can handle three level 8's at once easily :)

Erm... you DO realise you can just turn final smashes off?

Level Nines sometimes don't give me a chance to use the smash and they hit it out of me, then use it themselves...

Pisses meah off.

Heh, yeah but my mates all play with them on (items on low obviously), so I have to get used to them. Also I just love Wolf's final smash. He drops a !@#$% tank on your enemies! A !@#$% TANK! Seriously, when I heard about Fox/Falco/Wolf's final smash on the Dojo ages ago I was just like "Woah, a tank! A !@#$% tank!". It nearly broke my mind :)

The Starfox crew has the worst final smashes imo, they're so easy to dodge.

Why not get them on top of the landmaster and then lift it up until they are knocked off screen? Those are the easiest ways to get KO's.

Yeah, it's !@#$% frustrating how some FSes you have to aim first - Link's, Marth's, Ike's, Meta Knight's, etc. - while others there's no point, just activate as soon as you get it - Kirby's, Sonic's, Snake's, Pikachu's...

So, when you're using someone you have to aim with, and your opponent manages to hit it out of you, often you have no chance to counter attack before they activate theirs, and then completely own you with a ridiculously cheap attack.
Title: Re: Brawl: Addictive/10
Post by: Hammer Bro. Mike on July 02, 2008, 04:03:00 pm
Some Final Smashes require aiming, some require being close by, others you can activate instantly, another requires button pressing to make it stronger, and some are just plain cheap, or even at a certain position.

Aiming: Mario, Link, Samus, Marth, Zelda/Sheik, Pokemon Trainer, Ganondorf (could fit in close by as well), Lucario, Toon Link.

Close by: Kirby (if you're a far enough distance, you won't get sucked in), Luigi, Meta Knight, Ike, Olimar (helps to keep foe stuck in the ground), Captain Falcon.

Activate instantly: Fox, Pikachu, Mr. Game & Watch, Diddy Kong, Pit, Falco, Snake, Peach, Yoshi, King Dedede, Wolf, Ness, Bowser, Wario, R.O.B., Lucas.

Button pressing: Donkey Kong (pressing buttons makes it stronger, could fit in activate instantly as well).

Just plain cheap: Sonic.

Certain position: Jigglypuff (you need to be in the right spot to succeed with this one (could fit in activate instantly as well).

I'm sure some could be placed better but this is how I see it. Pikachu, Fox, Falco, Wolf, and Mr. Game & Watch could fit into the cheap category as well. It just depends on how you see it.
