I have no idea what the spirit tracks overworld sounds like, but it's not too bad. Most of the problems are in the mastering of the track.
Tone down the shaker, a lot. That hurt my ears. It's just way too jarring, and it since it only keeps the beat, it has no need to be so prominent.
Also, the main pipe synth melody needs to go down in volume. It sounds as if you've got the note velocities set a lot higher for the high notes. That's completely opposite of what you should actually do, because high notes have a tendency to naturally push through the mix you should actually lower their volume a little.
It's all there, just needs a little more work. Hope this helps :)

Its weird, in FL Studio the shaker was almost silent, but after I rendered it was really loud. I'll tone it down, and get the note velocities straightened out too. For reference, here's the extremely excellent actual song:

I think the composition sounds great. The flute however could use some work. It does not really sound like a panflute. Because a panflute is softer in tone than the flute you are using.

I'm no specialist in music, but the flute is the only thing that seemed wrong to me.

Hm. I guess you don't have the soundfont player for FL as that's only included in the signature bundle. Try one from here http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/archive/instruments/2003-06/21157.php or another free soundfont VST. The SGM 2.01 soundfont http://www.geocities.jp/shansoundfont/ is really quite excellent, either the bottle blow or pan flute instruments would be great here. I'd go with the bottle blow simply because it has more attack on the notes.

btw, the original song tempo is 138. It's a pity you don't have producer edition or higher cause you'd be able to drop an mp3 into the playlist and line it up with your notes.

Alright, took some of your advice, and worked on it more on my own. I think its getting better, but I don't think I've nailed the exciting feeling of the original.

Wow it sounds really good and the flute has definitely improved. But the reason why you have not nailed it yet, is because you lack a number of instruments. I think there is a guitar and a banjo or something like that. Additionally you have an instrument that sets a low bass beat.

This might be of some help, just spent half an hour mucking around with this myself.

By the way, the first few notes are the wrong pitch. The first 4 notes, need to be down a semitone (one line).

Some notes seem a little bit off key (could just be a layering issue, as the rest of the song isn't finished yet), but otherwise the soundfont is definitely pretty good

Darklight, your file says its missing some piece, and it won't make any sound when I play it. You were dead on about those first four notes though, big difference. Thanks!

Yeah, it'll be missing practically everything except for the note data. I've named the channels to their patch number and name (in the case of drums, bank then patch number) of the SGM soundfont, just replace the channels with whatever soundfont player you're using.
