Title: R4 DS
Post by: FictitiousSpoon on May 29, 2008, 06:47:03 am
So I'm not really sure whether were allowed to discuss these here or not as they could potentially have illegal things on them. So... does anyone have one? I've been thinking about buying one to try doing some homebrew and such with my DS but I don't know where is a good place to get one. R4 Canada seems like it would be a good place but I'm not sure if the ones they sell are the real thing or cheap knock offs, does anyone know?

Get a CycloDS Evolution, they're way better.

And it's not illegal. It's about as 'illegal' as owning an action replay. (really depends on what you put on them)

I bought an M3 just to play GB/C games.

...but don't tell anyone.

Yeh I have one, they are pretty good, though the build quality seems a little flimsy.

Mine is perfectly fine.

I'd say go with whatever's cheapest. I hear R4, M3, and CycloDS are the best three to choose from.

I acutally use mine to read eBooks, play GBA, GB/C, Genesis, and original NES games on the go, as well as various homebrew apps that I find scattered on the intarwebz. I think you can even find complete OS's around. I know they have DS Linux, etc, but those suck.

Oh yeah, and you can run DS games on it, but who does that?

<_<

The CycloDS Evo simply has more features and a lot better support.

Yeah, get a CycloDS Evo simply. I've had an R4 (it got stolen :/), and it wasn't all that great.

Eh? It's just called CycloDS Evolution. Not with simply on the end (you must be thinking of the M3).

I got mine from realhotstuff.com. They even take money orders.

What's also nice is that you can use moonshell to turn it into an MP3 player. (too bad it doesn't support WMA)

Protips: If you put Save5 as your coupon code, you get a few dollars discount.

It's also a good idea to get an EZflash 3 in 1 for GBA stuff, as well as for ram expansion for the web browser and DSlinux. It even has rumble support too.

And add www.gbatemp.net to your favorites, it has a ton of homebrew files and info.

Hey, what do you know! I can do all of that with my R4! Matter of fact, I DO do all of that with my R4! *shocked*

Can't answer that for you, but maybe it has better support? Maybe the navigation speed is really top notch? Who knows? Maybe it's personal preference?

I don't have a Cyclo, so I can't tell you anything about it.

100% DS download play compatibility, for starters. SDHC support too. Better quality parts, and a smoother interface. And it has team cyclops working on it.

Yes, $10 dollars extra will surely make you fall into poverty.

As filling up my car costs $50 per go, I have to pay bills, and I don't get a whole lot of work in the first place, what with other obligations that will affect my future career, I don't think I'll be able to afford that extra $10 which will surely cause me to fall into poverty. I can barely afford what I have to pay for now.

So shush, you.

Well I have a DSTT and I generally use it to watch films, read books and play (S)NES games.

I just bought an N5 Revolution.

LOLOLDIFFERENT.

The couple places I went to in pacific mall (most of you probably haven't heard of it... it's like an all out chinese mall) said that the R4 is discontinued.

M3 is the double price of an R4. But it sucks to compare with it, even the price is not worth it. The R4 works faster and runs games a lot better. 80 percent of the games can run on an R4, and less than 50 percent on the M3. Trust me, I own them both.

And I don't care... I wanted a flashcart just to correct the wrong Nintendo did to me (lol wut?): No GB/C compatibility.

Bad move, the N5 is a cheap R4 clone that's been known to actually break DS systems (how, I have no friggin clue).

Dunno about that one, though it's a bit harder to find nowadays.

The R4 isn't necessarily bad, it's just outdated with all the newer carts on the market (SDHC support being the main feature the R4 lacks).  For a new user, I'd recommend looking into the CycloDS Evolution, Supercard DS, and Acekard (either v2 or R.P.G.).  The SCDS has the most features, with the CycloDS Evo coming in at a very close second.  For homebrew, they're all about the same, though the SCDS has more stable soft-reset patching for homebrew programs than the current CycloDS Evolution beta firmware.
