Discussion / Re: Open Source .vs. Closed Source
« on: April 19, 2007, 04:25:33 am »
I'm a jealous coder, I like to feel that I own my own code. I don't really have anything against open source though, I just wouldn't be a part of an open source project (probably). I love open source software though, it saves me from having to buy my own :D

I think you would have to do it in DOS/something that's not related to your normal operating system? I'm not sure though, but there are quite a number of security features that Windows implements that might make it difficult to do something along those lines from within windows, but it might be easier to do from outside the OS?

Then again. I really have no clue as I've never attempted this before. That's just my two cents.

Other Projects / [Demo] Population Control
« on: March 17, 2007, 11:07:57 am »
Population control is a game that I made by myself in my own 2D engine. The actual gameplay programming took place starting last Tuesday and ended yesterday (Thursday), so it had a really short development cycle. However, it's a simple game, and it is essentially feature complete. At this stage I may fix up a few bugs if I find any (obviousy there are some somewhere, I'm sure), and maybe add a title/options screen...but that's all that's in the ball park for this game right now.

The graphics are all by me (yes! It's all programmer art!), although I owe credit to Josiah Tobin for helping me with the fox so that they didn't look like red huskeys.

The music is by QK. He claims it sucks because he made it in under an hour, I think it works really well. You decide!

The SFX are all off free internet sources.

And now, a screenshot...

also, a download link...

and a link to a page with more screenshots and probably a better description...

Yay.

Holy !@#$% TRW, thats bloody awesome.

Thanks. Although as I said, there was a team of students working on it...a core team of 19 students (6 programmers, 3 designers, 1 producer, 9 artists), as well as outsourced students (trailer, graphic design, website, music sfx). So I can't take credit for a lot of it. :P

« on: March 16, 2007, 11:48:17 pm »
Introspect is a surreal painting game that a group of students and I made as part of our game prototype workshop class. The second milestone build can be seen at http://introspect.greatgamesexperiment.com/.

The game is a surreal game where you interact with the world by painting it. It can be downloaded from: http://www.stephengazzard.com/Files/Introspect_Installer.rar.

In order to play the game, you will need UT2004, as this game is an unreal modification.

This game will be getting entered into the EA Reveal competition, next years IGF, and the modDB. Any feedback and (constructive) criticism is greatly appreciated.

Features include:
-surreal art
-interact with the world by painting it
-walking on walls

If you haven't set the char* to NULL or you haven't put anything in to it, it will give you damage.

« on: November 17, 2006, 06:26:29 am »
Is there even a market for this OS?

Vista supposedly is faster, easier, and more secure.

As far as I know, people generally want their OS to be as fast, easy, and secure as possible...it's an upgrade. If I could afford it, I'd probably get it.

Is this Twinsen supposed to be the same one as the one from Relentless and Twinsen's Adventure? Either way, looking really good so far, although...I absolutely suck at this game. D:

Entertainment / Re: Buying another PlayStation 2
« on: November 17, 2006, 04:05:47 am »
PS2's pretty cheap, if you wait a bit (until PS3 comes out) they'll be really cheap, what wiht all the people selling them to make room for theyir PS3's. The small ones are less than $100 CDN now, I think (I saw an ad), so if you wait a little bit, you can probably grab them for around $80 I'd imagine. Orthey're probably a lot cheaper in pawn shops now if you want to try getting a used one.

I can't afford it for a few weeks/until after Christmas anyways. :D

I'm not gonna go through the stress of trying to buy one during launch or Christmas season anyways. Maybe I'll get lucky and someone will buy me one.

Dang, someone beat me to it D:. I own Sega Smash Pack 2 for PC which has that on it, as well as that six in one cartridge with Sonic, Golden Axe, Streets of Rage, Columns, Revenge of Shinobi - and of course, Super Hang On. That game got around.

I suppose it's similar to illegal drugs. It may go against what you believe, but it has no impact on your life. People are selfish in the way that when something is wrong to them, it should not be allowed.

Thats not really a good comparison, Illegal drugs can effect other people. People get high and then drive and put my life in danger once they get on that highway.

There are people who use legal drugs responsibly and don't leave their basement/endanger others, though...there's always a way for things to be used irresponsibly. Drunk people are just as dangerous, yet alcohol is legal and no one seems to have a problem with it.

Entertainment / Re: I need a game server
« on: November 13, 2006, 06:04:54 pm »
Basically a server is responsible for recieving all packets and ensuring that all connected clients recieve these packets...or all necessary clients.

You should search for a simple packet sending example and communicate between a server and a client.

I don't think that you'd want to write a server in GM, it wouldn't be very efficient, you need your server to be able to handle all the connections dynamically if you're going to have people joining/leaving during gameplay, and I don't think that GM is robust enough to handle that very well. Using C++ with WinSock would probably work, and I'm sure that there are other ways as well but I've not used them.

Server programming is very complicated and there are entire classes dedicated to it in college or university. Not saying that it can't be done - and who knows, I'm probably wrong about the GM thing, AoDC might know better than me. But servers aren't a simple thing and you're probably going to need a book, at the least, to gain enough of an understanding to use them well, unless there is some really easy way to do servers in GM.
