Umm do you have to install a mod to show the "latest posts" or is that already on SMF
if so how do you allow it?

Go to the Admin panel and click 'Themes and Layouts' then the "Themes and Settings" tab, then choose your theme and fill in;
"Number of recent posts to display on board index:
To disable the recent posts bar set this value to zero."
