Looks pretty amazing... but my only problem is how you implemented the camera. I understand that the camera should rotate Link if he is moving forward, but Link should not rotate with the camera while he is standing still. Otherwise, everything else is grade A quality my friend.

May I ask what it is done in?

Post by: edlucas1988 on July 19, 2008, 04:06:32 pm
Well i made it sort of warcraft style for now anyways i can always change it, the way that it works is that if i press the left mouse button the camera is independent from link, if its not pressed he moves with the camera i found that it just makes moving easier. If you press the directional keys he rotates 90 degrees, or w/e the case is, added to the camera.

Wow, just for something starting, that is very good. Can't wait to see how it'll turn out with more work.

This is probably the best thing I've seen done with the WW models.

I'll keep watch, good luck.

Sorry forgot to answer the question im making this game using 3d Gamestudio 7. Its a pretty good engine. Before it i was looking through so many engines and having no luck with finding a feature and complexity balance. I tried so, so many but i finally settled on this one. Its not too bad although it is a bit outdated.

Also, thanks for all the kind comments. I will try my best to not let this project be another one that starts well and just dies quickly.

This actually looks really neat, and don't try and put too much effort into making the engine exactly how it was, I'm sure it will be awesome, as long as you put time and effort into it.

I am very impressed :-)

Different direction than I'm taking for sure- but it looks insanely great!

What engine are you using, if you mind me asking?
I'd love to see your engine mechanics ;-)

Mildly envious as well ;-) But, that just means I've got to push harder :-)

Don't give up! Keep up the work!

zeldaknack:

im using the engine 3d gamestudio 7, thx for the encouragement.

SlimmyG:

the story is under wraps for now...all i can say is that i have one and i wont be needing any assistance from any writers here, although it is appreciated. Also i havent added any of the stylized water wake effects (the white lines you reffered to).

Stuff i have done so far:

   Heart system
   Most of the player movement
   Interaction with NPCs
   Text box system
Collision is working the way i want it to
   Static shadows for world geometry
   Cel shader
A few ingame detail meshes (trees, bucket, wooden spears)
Facial expression system (includes blinking, etc)
   Simple sword combo system
   Simple enemy AI
Particle systems that can be limited to certain geometry (i.e. dirt particles on only dirt)

i used the same engine in the 90s... you have the A7 engine, i used A4 ;) it was a very limited engine then.... its better now?
Title: Re: [WIP] My Legend of Zelda fan game
Post by: edlucas1988 on July 31, 2008, 02:38:58 pm
Its still incredibly limited, but its so easy to use that it almost makes up for it. If i could use another one thats better i would but in terms of this game i dont really need a powerhouse engine because the cel shader doesnt need that much power, which is the bulk of the shaders used.

All it has to do is render the geometry properly, handle some collision and do a bunch of coded stuff. Doesnt take the best engine to do that, if i had normal mapping with parallax and shadow mapping on world geometry then i would need a better engine and a better laptop. This game runs smoothly at 60 fps on my intel built-in graphics chip, so its good for simple graphical games. This is very good for a wide target audience because if i can run it then everybody else should be able to as well.

It all looks good, except for the fact that link seems to drop into the ground. And the swimming didn't look TOO good(Where are the waves?)
But overall it looks very good and promising :)

wildex999:
     1. link is like a giant stapler in terms of his z position vector, he just snaps to the lowest point below him (for now)
     2. i haven't added any effects whatsoever except for the dirt smoke (as a test for how i would create particles in the style of wind waker), this project is only like 2 weeks in so bear with my pre, pre-alpha build

everyone else:
I'm trying my best to not give up on this thing (even though sometimes i just want to crush my keyboard) and your encouragement is helping a lot so thank you and i will try to do as much as i can with a level of quality that i would be satisfied with.

P.S. i have never played wind waker even to this day, even though i want to (i dont have a GC) so im making all of this up from reference videos, i have played oot and majoras mask and am using those as a frame of reference as well

Good old Freewebs...  although I prefer my website under www.Deathtailsz.webs.com, makes it seem more of a actual website domain. then typing in www.freewebs.com/Deathtailsz, better then .tk or .uk.co (Or what ever those free domain stuff is. XD)

And I love the WW graphics, they're just a... breath of fresh air, can't wait for a demo!

I'm definitely impressed with the engine work thus far man,
just not a fan of using the ripped 3d models, but that's just
me ;-)

I wish I had your programming talent ;-)
I can rig, animate, and model like crazy, but programming
beats the living snot out of me- while you seem to be trouncing
it very well.

You're doing great on the animations, physics and such- half way
wondering  now if I should have gone with A7 engine over
buying the license for Gamecore... *cue impending self-doubt*

Definitely impressed with your work thus far, keep it up! It's good
to see others working in 3d as well :-)

SURPRISE!

GRAPHICS SWITCH...lol, sorry to those who were fond of wind waker style, but i decided to change them. Anyways i will still include some cel-shaded art, if it makes sense like a mix of two styles.

I finally got the process down, it was challenging and took a lot of trial and error but i now know how to get him out of his game and get him into mine.

Right now i only have the basic animations but soon i will put up some more. Im also working on his house level. As you can see i got down the basic textures and level geometry. This is super basic so dont think it will stay like this.

Damn he looks pissed off.

PS i will probably be switching sites, as you can see by the pic links, and i will try to upload a new vid.

Big step back for the graphics if you ask me, I don't mean to sound this harsh but I just lost a lot of interest in this project.
And please don't mix the styles, it never looks good- especially in 3D
Title: Re: [WIP] My Legend of Zelda fan game
Post by: edlucas1988 on September 22, 2008, 08:05:43 pm
Hey everyone, its been a while since my last post and i just wanted to update all of you on whats happening. Well last time i said that i changed the graphics to twilight princess but something happened that made me change my mind.
Ive changed the graphics back to the Wind Waker art style. I did this because i got so caught up with the realistic Twilight Princess graphics that i went overboard a bit. I created bloom shaders, i wanted stencils shadows, tons of decorative meshes like trees, stones, leaves, etc. that i just killed the framerate.
The fact that i am making this game on a laptop that has a built-in graphics card hinders me a lot so i decided it was all or nothing so i switched back the wind waker style. To be honest i kind of missed it too, it grows on you.

And to add to that i made a new video. Ive been working enemy ai, and i came up with a moblin walking along a designated path inside a new level. I also streamlined the process of getting the animations and found the solution to jagged cel-shading (turns out that when i imported the models they had a bunch of isolated vertices so i just merged them). I also made some more advancements in facial expressions (everything except the eyebrows they dont change as of yet).

Here is a new video showing the level that for right now is just a test, a moblin is in the background walking along his path. Ignore any "glitches" you might see because everything is running at half the framerate its supposed to because of recording software (fraps).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m3SulEr5gGE

Well i hope you like it and i will be making more vids of the ai progress. My goals for right now are: AI, HUD, key mapping actions, a few puzzle gameplay mechanics (push cube, moveable platforms, etc), sword attack combos, more enemies, more deco meshes, more levels. Most likely in that order.

hey guys, i have a question. I have all these twilight princess models lying around on my computer collecting dust and i was wondering if you would want some enemies converted to toon style and used in my fan game.

Here would be an example of the skeleton enemy cel-shaded in the engine...

I'm so happy you switched back to Wind Waker style! I do agree that a less "realistic" stalfos would flow better with the background. Wind Waker's textures for Characters were minimal colors, and for landscape everything seemed to be painterly approached :) Still super-stoked about this project! Keep it up! :D

Well i got the moblin in the level to patrol a path right, but then at certain times he can take random pauses. When the player gets close to it then the moblin turns to face the player and if the player gets too close he pushes you back.

I will post a new video up demonstrating the new ai stuff i created, next one the list is combat. Woop-woop.

Hey everyone, im posting today to reveal a new project that i will be working on simultaneously with my wind waker-like 3d project. This one is 2d and uses the minish cap graphics. So far i have made pretty good progress and have the first level already designed.

Here is screencap of the whole level. Right now it is very much still a WIP but it is about 50% complete. I still need to add enemies, characters, animations for the water and some minor details.

Here is the video of it: Hope you like it!

Hey everyone IM BACK FROM THE DEAD!

And i started working on the project again, but im cancelling all others projects cuz i really want to focus on this one only, cuz lets face it all my other stuff is crap compared to this.

So what i worked on for the last 2 days was moblins AI, its about 400 lines of code right now and its pretty simple but it works well and how i want it to so thats good. He pretty much reacts like you expect him to.

Havent done any player-side stuff so link pretty much just stands there (for now). The vid was recorded at a low resolution so the HUD is messed up.

Cheers.

I dont really know about the size difference, maybe i scaled him down a little more. He seems really slow because the recording software slows everything down by 30 frames, so thats why everything seems really slow.

Sorry to double post but i have a few questions that maybe you guys could answer for me.

1. How do you want link to move, cuz right now it may look good but its terrible absolutely terrible. If you guys could write something simple that would explain to me how you want him to move (what keys, with/without the mouse, etc).

2. Does anyone know any heart engine that they could let me see the coding for cuz mine is only a quarter done and it would be one less thing to worry about.

3. If anyone knows how i could achieve the effect (or if you have already created the effect, if i could use it) that is spawned whenever link hits an enemy...if you know the general idea behind the effect, if you could explain it to me so that i better understand it.

4. If you know where to find or if you made any textures of the rolling/dust swirl effect, i have 2 but they are more tailored for the bomb explosions.

5. Any menu engine that i could use as a starting base would also be awesome.

6. What do you want the next thing for me to do once im finished with the AI...anything from chests to levels. I want to put out a demo soon so i was thinking i would create a dungeon area (original geometry but using existing textures) where you could fight moblins. Maybe a chest or something to mix it up but im drawing up blanks from then on.

If you could help me with any of my questions i would greatly appreciate it and it would speed me up quite a bit.

I have a slight idea. Have you played Fable on PC? I think a setup like that would be cool. WSAD for movement, mouse to look around and slash, etc.

I'd say just stick with basic things you need first. Fix up any coding, bugs you can find, etc. Then just release a room wiht some moblins on it or something. Maybe once you get the HUD working you can add heart containers around?

Your animation has come a long ways Edlucas, I'm impressed.

I have my heart engine complete- but unfortunately, it's for GameCore engine- same with melee, chests giving items, tutorial engine, movement- in otherwords, much of which you seem to be missing.

I don’t have inventory working yet. :-(

I don’t have the stores functional yet

I’m still having issues setting up ammo types.

I don’t have quite your skill with animating though.

In regards to the  effect when link hits an enemy-
My cheat is to check if he ‘hits’, and if so, at the specific time in the animation of the sword       attacks, I add a particle effects spawner to his blade.

I imagine you will beat me- you’re progressing nicely. Keep up the great work, and good luck :-)

-I still am surprised you’re not using your own textures, and models though- it would be so much more amazing if you did… Then again, I see the wisdom in not doing so- to a point, as I’m hitting year 2 on my game, and I imagine I might well be done if I had gone the ripped models route

I noticed a few things:

I was able to move the camera by itself (I really do not know how, I pressed a bunch of mouse buttons at  the same time while trying to move to see what would happen :P)

So, while moving the camera I went around through the walls etc...

WHILE I was in this "noclip" mode, I press "u" or something around there and a textbox popped up, yadda yadda yadda Testing Text box :P, so I pressed all of the buttons on my keyboard trying to close it when I hit a key (I don't know which) and the text box went into a tight loop, always redrawing itself... O_o..

LOL....well two things, didnt work on the camera collision at all (means it can be through anything, and if u figured it out mouse wheel can zoom in/out) and the "i" button will pop-up a textbox and draw text, if u press it again it just does the text again, no way to get rid of it. These are all things that i just wanted to test.

Wow, it's starting to look surprisingly accurate to the original.  XD You deserve your props, I have to say, for your work so far. Great stuff.

I have been doing 3D Animation for several years now, but right now it's more in the context of film, not of gaming. So a lot of what I see still confuses me.  :P

So watching your videos, I noticed that you had actual animation data from Wind Waker, and a lot of the animations were taken directly from that game, not just the models. And I noticed that in one of your videos you seemed to still have the rig for controlling Link. How exactly did you export rigging and animation data to a completely different platform like that? I mean, exporting (and importing) models themselves is easy, but I never learned how to prepare an entire animation and rig to be changed to a format applicable to other software. There must have been a lot of variables and such that had to be kept track of. Lol, don't worry, I wasn't asking for a long, complicated explanation or anything, I was just commenting that I was intruiged by it.

I really love what you've done, and can't wait to see how this game shapes up and see what your plans are.  XD

But one thing I notice, the Moblin's reaction to Link is too sudden. He doesn't have the animation where he suddenly becomes aware of Link's presence, then comes after him. It just cuts to him facing Link. But right now that's not too important. You probably have more pressing priorities, like adding important content.

BTW, what kind of stuff are you adding right now? I would love to see a push block or a treasure chest. Maybe even one of those things where you light a torch and a door unlocks.  :P

Thanks for all of your kind support support guys but i have some relatively bad news. I have stopped working on this project. Basically i got bored of it. But i did not scrap it, its just simply waiting to be worked on again on my hardrive.

Right now im working on another engine (ut2004) and making a halo total conversion mod...you can check it out here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5VTUfcdncdE

I will probably work on my zelda game again but keep in mind that i had to start everything from scratch...meaning EVERYTHING. I had to always work around the engine not like the unreal engine where i always exceed my expectations. Ut2004 has an awesome engine and robust pathfinding, and is not as frustrating to work with as 3d Gamestudio (i hate that engine). Soooo, i might just decide later that i should make this game in unreal engine but i dont know about that.

So if anyone wants to either help me code on 3d Gamestudio or has experience with the unreal engine and knows how to make a cel shaded game or program some simple ai, then im down. But im not going to work on this game either for a long while or until i get some help. Sorry if this is annoying or displeasing but its the truth.

I dont really care if its Halo or Zelda becouse you made both of them tottaly awesome! But i think you will get bored on that to and you can go back to zelda and so it will continue and end up with Two games, atleast i think thats how it will end.

No offense here, as much as I liked seeing an almost Wind Waker clone (or parody most likely) told me it had no story and was just a test on game development or AI programming in general.

I kind of saw this coming sooner or later if not very soon, this happens to games which have no plans, research, artwork, assets or any kind of work to a story either... it just falls flat on its face with no under-lying architecture.

Now if someone else adapted this project with a story and other things apart from AI programming practice, I think this game would go somewhere :3

Too bad it fell into just practice, this clearly shows something very interesting and fun :D
(Oh and, why not give DX Studio a try?)
Title: Re: [WIP] My Legend of Zelda fan game
Post by: edlucas1988 on March 04, 2009, 02:58:13 am
Well i had planned stuff, it wasnt just practice...it was mostly to see what i could do. I was new to all this stuff and with 3d gamestudio. Dx studio i dont think is for me either but whatever, i can always return to it. I did have a story, just that i wasnt the one writing it. I dropped the game not because i wasnt interested but because i was completely alone working on it and got pissed off with 3d gamestudio.

Oh btw, made a better version of my blood gulch vid. Check it out.

I wonder why this topic isnt moved to the graveyard yet.
The project that this topic is made for is dead and UT2004 is not topic related expect that its the same person that makes it, he should start a new topic that isnt in the zelda development and explain more about UT there, that would make it easier.
Title: Re: [WIP] My Legend of Zelda fan game

My last words of advice:

Relying on a single game engine is like relying on a bum to get you into a mansion... it just doesn't work.

Careful planning, research (a LOT of it) and dedication plus a lot of information is vital to ANY game.

Regardless if you use the most popular game engine and have a $2,000.00 budget to use, what if the engine is horrible and sucks to begin with?
That is the problem, people think there is a "do it for me" button when they do not even give things a try.

Most people who make games are usually people who play games but never fathom in MAKING a REAL game worth their while, this is a common trend and 99.9% of ANY project fails... hell I have NEVER seen a complete 2D or 3D game that is commercially completed for the fans by the fans for free... never.

It is a rare thing to do because most people lack any ambition or ideas, art and assets too, to do much of anything and rely on others to do it "for them."

I applaud your work but I saw this coming, I think this topic needs to bury itself in its own grave unfortunately as the author seems to show no interest in continuing the project at all.

In all, good work, but next time hopefully you have a story and other types of structure to hold the game together :3

Well im switching graphics because i initially wanted to do twilight princess style anyways, and its much easier in terms of getting the content. So here are a few teaser shots of a fully animated Epona and Moi.

The story will be similar but there will be no twilight realm, and since my computer is slow im going to give the option to enable effects like bloom and stuff.

Are you going to release the source to the Wind Waker graphics demo?  I'm sure it would be useful to many.
Title: Re: [WIP] My Legend of Zelda fan game
Post by: edlucas1988 on April 08, 2009, 08:49:08 pm
Well i saw it but i was taking my time to answer it because i was thinking of how to answer it. You see its very difficult to extract the stuff itself, especially if you're not familiar with it (its still hard if you are though), and to release the source is somewhat useless because its in a format specific to the engine and is in no way complete. It was just a demo and i stopped it because of the very reason that it was so hard to handle and get all the source art.

If you mean "source" to include coding as well, well that is also kinda useless since the coding is again incomplete and just plain bad. IF however you want me to tell you how to extract everything yourself i can tell you and anyone else who asks individually. If you want a model that i used such as outset island or link or something (not animated or rigged though because i don't have the source stuff on my computer anymore just the stuff from the game engine) then i can send you that stuff.

Hope my long-winded answer was what you were looking for, if you need some more clarification or have more questions just let me know.

create "Ocarina of Time: REMASTERED" with Twilight Princess models, that would be pretty sweet :P
I have been dreaming of that even since i completed TP :P

Could we leave OoT in it's grave of awesomeness now?

Anyways, nice Twilight models, but I thought this was still windwaker stuff...  But, oh well, I must be snoozing. x)

It's probably worth the 300MB's. xD

I changed the styles cuz it was hard for me to work with those graphics, with these, as you can tell by the immense progress ive been making in a short amount of time (models wise), its much easier to work with.

So some more stuff to show that i havent been doing nothing.

With some bloom and a skybox these can actually look pretty cool. So ive also managed to create even more work for myself for now but it has great results in the end. When i first put every model into my game they were at their highest level of detail and had no other low resolution meshes. But now im redoing them all with 4 levels of detail and this has great benefits, especially for my low-end laptop. I can have like 20 spiders rendering on the screen at the same time and experience not even one frame drop!!

I agree. That's some pretty good rendering, and with not even a drop in the frame rate, who can complain?

So, where did you download those models from? I've been looking for a good TP rip.

The bloom is perhaps a bit heavy. In the main, you'll want the bloom to accent bright areas and so give darkened areas more definition. At the moment, it's just making everything look washed out.

I agree, the bloom's a bit too much.
Needs some AA also.

The water looks good. I have just a question about the video. Are the npc's and animals floating in the air?

Ya lol, they are just models with animations right now. Theres no coding for them to stick to the ground or walk or anything smart.

Search up thakis' bmd viewer. Its in a forum called .szs explained. You need this tool along with like 4 others to extract a gamecube rom and all of its files and folders. Good luck.

Switched styles, too annoying to use WW graphics. TP is way easier. So after much silence ive decided to show you what ive been slowly working on.

Ok now to explain what you dont see....link has like 100 animations and that took a huge while to get properly working. He can move much, much better than in my WW demo. He has no face or hood yet because they are separate and i havent added them yet. The sword is placed temporarily right now.

What ill be working on in the next few weeks is making link complete (face, hood) and making at least one working enemy that can correctly pathfind its way to link and attack and get killed when you attack it.

I would like to have the first town done first becouse there you can do pretty much everything.
Climb, jump, swim, talk, enter houses and such things, that place would be the best becouse you can test pretty much everything there. There may be better places but thats the best i can think of right now.

@LTGH: Ill think about doing a town as my second thing cuz its a lot of work for a whole town, i was thinking more of a place to test out the combat system....so if you could suggest something along those lines. I WOULD LOVE IT if someone could give me reference pictures from OoT or MM or even WW to illustrate their idea better.

I have been working pretty hard these past couple of days. Youll all see what ive done in a youtube video soon!!!

A lot of features have been programmed and now im so motivated to keep going that the progress will just keep coming.

Maybe make it at the place where you get to see Epona, you know, the spring.
There you will be able to lift objects (stones, optional ofc), battle a few enemies, roll into the gate to test objects, maybe even talk with the girl? Hopefully be able to crawl in the hole, but i guess that wont be in :P, walk in water, and have a look at epona.

Thats more then i expect for a first preview so if you have all that, it would be awesome :P
