RIVERSIDE – A naked intruder startled an elderly couple in their home early Wednesday and broke a vase over the head of the homeowner, who used a baseball bat to fend off the attack, authorities said.
Kenneth and Kathleen Collier managed to flee the home about 4:30 a.m. but the intruder barricaded himself inside until a SWAT team got him out three hours later.
“The police thought he was probably on angel dust,†Kathleen Collier said. Her 77-year-old husband needed stitches to close a wound on his head.
“I feel fortunate to be alive,†he told KCAL-TV.
Officers were called to the Picker Avenue home in response to a call that a “naked and agitated†man had attacked a homeowner, police spokesman Steven Frasher said.
The man broke a rear window to get inside the house and was quickly confronted by the baseball bat-wielding homeowner, Frasher said. The naked man struck the homeowner with a vase.
The Colliers then fled the house.
A police SWAT team surrounded the house, but the intruder couldn't be contacted, Frasher said. While inside, the intruder began fiddling with a stove, turning on the gas, so police shut off the gas supply.
The man surrendered about 7:30 a.m.
“He looked outside and probably realized he was outnumbered,†Frasher said. “He got down on all fours and officers took him into custody.â€Â
The naked intruder, who wasn't carrying identification, was arrested for investigation of burglary, assault with a deadly weapon and felony vandalism, Frasher said. He was taken to Riverside Community Hospital for treatment of cuts and bruises. lulz.
