Title: The Legend of Zelda: Midnight Phantasm - LAST DEMO SPEC TEST (Bug Fixed)
Post by: Scooternew on September 30, 2006, 04:55:06 pm
(http://img255.imageshack.us/img255/986/screenstq9.png)
I've made either two or three topics asking for specs, and this is the last one before I release a demo of the real game. FPS isn't really important, although I'd like to know what it says (it isn't "true" FPS, it is just the room speed) - but it SHOULD hover around 60, in fact, it should always stay at 60.

This is the last time I'm probably doing this, as most of the basic engine is coded.

I need to know the following things:

A) Does the room transition work?
B) Does the rain look smooth?
C) Does picking up objects work smoothly? (there is an occasional bug I know, you can report it if you find it, I already know it's there though)
D) In Link's house, I've come up with a set method of how I want to make boundaries, tell me if everything is "bouded", etc. you can't go outside his house
E) Tell me if the heart upgrade works, and how you like it (the way it looks)
F) Tell me how lighting works
G) If you press "space" at the sign from the front, you should read it, from the back or sides, you should pick it up - tell me if this happens

Press F1 for controls.

As a little hint, the story is revolving around dreaming and nightmares. I'm sure you think I'm copying Shadowgazer, but I had these ideas long before. Anywy, you will be able to "dream hop". Basically, dreams might be rooms or even new worlds. I'm planning on having one nightmares whever everything is topsy turvy and backwards. Even the controls - left moves link right, up moves him down. It'll look insane. Nightmares will usually represent dungeons, and there will even be dreams inside of dreams.

Spriters are needed for this project to progress. If you can be a full time (e.g. contactable on a regular basis, work efficiently) spriter, please PM me or post here.

P.S. - ITEMS HAVE BEEN TAKEN OUT OF THIS DEMO FOR DEVELOPMENT PURPOSES. THEY STILL EXIST (e.g. using the lamp, arrows).

What does that mean "doesn't work"?

It worked all great but I got an error when I pressed enter at the Registration room.

What was the error?

I'm not getting ANY errors, this is kind of weird.

Froze? What are you talking about, nothing like this is happening to me.

Please people, be specific..

I forgot to clarify some stuff:

When you are in the name enter screen, just press enter to advance to the next screen/demo.

Same error that I had last time, I start it up and it will inmediatly ask me if I want to send a report because the program crashed.

It's probably my PC though.
Don't forget to put up screenshots :P

Ok, ok.

I'm sure it is your PC. I don't see why it should use up that much memory though. Please, tell me your PC specs. I'll put up screens in a sec.

Do you guys have the demo saved to your computer or do you click the download demo and just open. If you open, you'll get errors, if you save, that won't happen.

I don't get that error, that's weird.

I might change the rain sound, it is the original LTTP sound though.

So... did you? Because I did. And I still got the same error-message as you.

Great job man ;)

That's so weird, I don't get that error. I just added that object right before the demo though, maybe that's why. Let me reupload.

EDIT: Ok reuploaded.

FOUND THE BUG. FIXED IT. The zip should be about 4 mb, that's just with the mp3, the actual game is only 1.67 or so mb.

sword works

throwing is still buggy, the object needs to follow the player better
(and thrown objects need to detect collision but you knew that)

room transition works, and the boundries was a-ok, with the exception of where you started in the room

lighting worked great, nice effect

the main problem is that the game was chopping like hell, from 60 to 2 FPS randomly
might just be me, because ive had this trouble with other games as well, but not all of them

I expect the FPS to do that, it just isn't updated fast enough when you do thinks like call the transition or show the textbox. No problems.

Well, whatever for now - just a few more results. Throwing is a little buggy - it'll stay this way for now and probably most of the way through development, and fixing the bugs I will do, but changing it is something I'm thinking I might do.

It works very smoothly! Good job! The only thing that annoyed me, is the corner cutting. Link is much to sensitive.

A) Well, it worked fine til I got stuck in a wall. :/ No wait, after trying a bit more I realised it transferred you from where you were standing in the grass relative to the house.
B) Yes it does, very smooth.
C) I think it works fine, just that the object sometimes cover too much of Link's body, and the pots inside the house moves a bit awkward when you throw them.
D) Yeah it worked just fine, everything was solid.
E) Worked just fine, and it looks good. :)
F) The lightning effect was great! Good job on that.
G) It does work.

The only complaint I'd have for this demo is that the collisions are a bit sensetive. Sometimes I slid around the sign and Link didn't read it, or even a bush. Great job on all the effects and such tho! ^^

So you settled on a title then?   ;)

This plays beautifully, Scooter. Only criticism I would make is, as Soulrivers  says, some of the collisions are a little too sensitive. This is only an issue with things like the sign, stuff you need to be touching to interact with. You can slip right past them. Otherwise they're spot-on.

No techincal errors for me either. Never drops below 60 FPS and it looks silky-smooth.

I'll be watching this one closely. Good luck. :D

Thanks King Mob. I'll change corner-cutting sensitivity.

As for this:

Quote
A) Well, it worked fine til I got stuck in a wall. :/ No wait, after trying a bit more I realised it transferred you from where you were standing in the grass relative to the house.
Yes, I didn't make it go to the right position, I just wanted to check if the actual transition worked, where the screen closed in a circle on itself.

The throwing is gonna be a little buggy for a while, but as long as you can pick up a pot and throw it and carry it and it pretty much stays in the right position, that's all I need for now. It's relatively new, so I haven't worked out all the kinks. Occasionally, there WILL be an error where the pot appears 10-20 pixels off - an error I can't seem to fix. SO just ignore that if it happens.

Ignoring the obvious errors I knew would come up, I've pretty much gotten the kind of results I wanted. So I'll leave this open another week or so, and otherwise, more coding for me.

Worked fine on my PC. Full FPS, and the only bug I saw was being able to have an empty string for a name in the reg system =)

Hehe, not a bug either. Just didn't take that into consideration.

looks like a pretty decent built engine. The rain sound is a little annyoign but I think thats because you have a song over it and the rain effect is just blaring. If you could maybe tune down the rain sound and change the bg music it should sound perfect.

A) The room transition works fine.
B) The rain looks very smooth.
C) I picked up all objects, and it is fine.
D) Everything is "bounded". I can't go outside of the house.
E) Heart upgrade..... I liked the hearts with the white line around it.
F) I didn't see lightning. Fairy particles look good though.
G) The sign thing works too.

Very good job. Except I would like to comment on the fairy.
If you run around in circles, the fairy..... isn't smoothly following.
Everything else is good. I don't think I saw lightning though.
Keep up the good work ScooterNew!
