Entertainment / Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker TGS Demo
« on: September 26, 2009, 10:45:25 pm »
Lemme state right off the bat: this game is awesome. :D You know that IGN has put the demo given to TGS attendants online, right? You can download it here:

http://psp.ign.com/articles/102/1027904p1.html

The installation process is really simple, also you have to have firmware 6.0.

So onto the game. Controlling the camera with the face buttons is a great decision, I've been pulling off Tranq. headshots just as easily as in MGS 3 or 4 (I barely got any in Portable Ops), and you get a nice little indicator when they fall asleep.

Also, the decision to reseparate the weapons and items menus is great (in Portable Ops you had one menu into which you could place 4 item/weapons at a time. In Peace Walker you can carry 6 weapons and 6 items, I believe).

The game is divided into missions, but it's not as open-ended as Portable Ops, all the missions are to be done in order (but you can go back and play old ones, or replay one in Co-op). The cutscenes are in full 3d sometimes, and seamlessly transition to Ashley Wood's comic-book style scenes. Your communicator is one of the more dramatic departures from the norm as it doesn't pause the game to bring it up. Your main contact, Kaz Miller, calls you and talks to you while you play the game (almost reminiscent of Splinter Cell's radio).

When you start a mission you can choose one of four loadouts: Battle Snake, Sneaking Suit Snake, Naked Snake, or Jungle Fatigues Snake. I've only tried Jungle and Sneaking (the only two with tranquilizer guns in their loadout), but their outfit also effects your camouflage index (oh yes, it's back). You can go prone or press up to walls as usual, but you can't move while doing this, it's solely for hiding yourself.

Oh, did I mention that I can't understand a lick of it because it's entirely japanese? Well, not entirely, the main menu options (Load, New Game, Delete, Options) are english, and sometimes the subtitles will have english letters (CIA, MSF (Militaires Sans Frontieres, Snake's military group in the game), BIGBOSS (yes, all one word. :P)), but pressing the PS button on my PSP gives me the usual grey menu entirely in Japanese. :P

So yeah, get this demo if you like Metal Gear and/or amazing PSP graphics and controls. It has four whole missions, of which I've done two.

Entertainment / PS2, Dreamcast games for download on PSN?
« on: September 22, 2009, 11:24:29 pm »
So, I guess a leak from a SEGA/Sony meetup suggests that Sony is planning on selling PS2 games on the Playstation store and that Dreamcast games as well as an import section are also being considered.

Holy !@#$%, that'd be epic. It's like Nintendo's virtual console stuff, except with consoles that were actually good (note, some of the consoles on Virtual Console are good, I'm just generalizing)

FL Studio 9 came out, and all of a sudden I wanted to play with it again. I decided to get better at using the program before I started composing original stuff, so I'm doing Green Hill Zone theme from Sonic the Hedgehog. Here it is so far:

UPDATE: Lots of changes later and here we are:

http://www.box.net/shared/c9ltdfn3b5 [version 2]

Increased the tempo, added more background instruments, and continued expanding the main melody.

UPDATE 2: Alrighty, the whole song is here now!

Ever-so-slightly increased the tempo, added more instruments, etc.

Hey all. I've noticed some people have been using Unity to make their WIP games on here. That's great! I don't know if it's because my influence somehow spread through the internets to these people, or just that Unity got really popular after becoming available for Windows, or some combination of the above. Anyways, I just thought I'd show you my latest project to remind you who's the current Unity champ of ZFGC.

UPDATE: The Physics Playground map is now available for download as a single-player demo. Enjoy!

I just beat Metal Gear Solid 4 last night. It took me 19 game hours, and I got the rank of "Eagle" (which apparently means that I'm an experienced weapon handler who racked up my headshots).

Just wanted to say that it was epically awesome, and anyone who likes Metal Gear games needs to get this game (probably a bit late in mentioning that, as anyone who likes Metal Gear games probably beat this game back in June when it was released).

I made a new boxart for MGS: VR Missions, just because. I had to make my own 3D stage for Snake and Grey Fox, seeing as I couldn't find a suitable one.

Hey guys. I recently got FL Studio, so I've been messing around trying to make a little music. This is a really small clip with a probably overly-large file size, but tell me what you think and how I can improve. n_n

Okay, I've never played any of the Battlefield games, but this one looks too cool to pass up.

They're having a sign-up for the closed beta, so why not try and get in? :)

Also, check out the video of Victory Village. Looks fun. :D

This game sounds insane. 100+ levels where you have to get a star. There's a notepad thing you can open and write on. Anything you write is spawned into the level, and you can use it to help you get the star.

Anything you write.

Anything.

Oh, did I mention it's a DS game. Comes out Fall '09. ;____;

Interview there describes it pretty well. They have a video and stuff too.

Jalapeño

Character Biography
Jalapeño is more than just your average gunslinger from south of the border. He makes his living capturing criminals and bringing them to justice. Good old fashioned, pour hot peppers down your throat, Mexican justice. One day he saw a flier blow across the road, along with a few tumbleweed. He grabbed it up and gave it a look over, and this is what it said: "ZFGC Character Contest 2008 is commencing! Pepper-scorched corpses of your opponents wanted! Reward!" Without a moment to waste, Jalapeño sprang into action!

Chapter One (Capítulo Uno)
Jalapeño stepped up to the arena entrance, not quite sure what to expect. He had already entered into the competition, and was told to come to the arena to see what his matchup was. As he stepped inside he was bathed in a light-green stripy glow. An arena employee, with a name tag that read Walnut, beckoned him over to the reception desk.

"Hello there sir, are you here for the competition?" said Walnut

Jalapeño replied, and told him his name.

"Well then Mr. Jalapeño, step through this door to enter the contestants' locker room. Your opponent will arrive shortly."

And so Jalapeño entered the locker room, well furnished and clean. He waited for a good while before an unfamiliar face entered the room, wearing a cowboy hat, and carrying a guitar on his back and a chipmunk on his shoulder.

"Hola amigo. You look like quite the character. ¿So, what's your name hombre?" Jalapeño inquired.

"They call me Character, and this is my chipmunk Nuts. Say, have you seen any vending machines around, he likes energy drinks." Character replied.

"Hold up there hombre. You're my first opponent. They call my Jalapeño, and I'm sorry to have to tell you that you will be tasting peppery fury once we meet in the arena."

And so, introductions complete, Jalapeño had met his first opponent. He felt excited and ready for a fight, though he knew that his match would not be for some time still. As Character left the main locker room to find a vending machine, Jalapeño called out

"¡Mayo el hombre mejor se gana!"

FAQ
Q - Is Jalapeño supposed to be making fun of Mexican culture?
A - No, he's just idealizing/making stuff up about it.

Q - How does making people eat peppers kill them?
A - Jalapeño would be happy to let you find out firsthand! Just come a little closer...

HDMI'd my PS3 with incredible results. Component'd my Wii with nice results, but a bit disheartened to finally realize that the Wii has absolutely no AAing.

All my older systems work fine, except the PS2 looks like it wants some S-video cable. I'll have to pick one up.

Also, if you ever have doubts about Vizio 22'' HDTVs, stop doubting. They're cheap, stylish, and work great.
