Hey. I need a good language for writing 3D and 2D games that is easy to learn and has good tutorials on the internet. And I would also like to know of any simple way to write your own language. Thanks. ;)

Entertainment / The Vista Caliber!
« on: July 11, 2006, 04:46:06 pm »
Have any of you heard of the new system the Caliber by the startup company Vista? Its supposed to be really cool with really cheap games! On a note of seriousness though, my brother and I are starting up a company called Vista with hopes of making a basic gaming console called the Caliber. Our idea is to have it run Macromedia Shockwave Player from ram, then run a director file from off of the disk. This would support Flash and Director games, since you can put a Flash game into a director file. We have plenty of money to spend designing and building the console, but I'm not exactly sure where to start. My plan is...

1. Buy all the parts (listed below)
2. Make the BIOS screen in Flash. Import it to Director. The BIOS system's Game option would run the file "D:\core.dir"
3. Shockwave Player and the BIOS file would be burned to the system's ROM.
4. Assemble the parts and plug into a TV
5. Burn a director game called core.dir onto a CD, and make sure that the video and audio output work.
6. Build a case for the console
7. Design and Build the controllers, whos buttons are mapped to keyboard keys. There would have to be a special controller for P1 and P2, but they would be included.
8. Keep one model for ourselves. Start building more and selling them.

But I don't know where to buy ROM or how to write to it. And I don't know which OS is good for quick startup and compatible with my chosen hardware. My chosen hard ware is:

1. 52X Sony CD-Rom Drive
2. Cooling Fan
3. Intel Celron D 2.5 Ghz Processor
4. GeForce FX 5200 Graphics Card (with S-Video output)
5. 128 MB Ram

The games would cost between 10-20 dollars, and would really help us out with profits because they would cost only about a dollar or so to manufacture. Can someone recommend any other hardware that I might need, especially for the controllers, and how I would go about writing to ROM. Thanks for your help!

EDIT: And to Joeshmo: Don't worry. I'm going to pay for Netterra before I spend anything on this.

Other Projects / Sonic Skate [Demo Added!]
« on: July 01, 2006, 07:30:33 am »
Hey all. This is Moldorma and I'm making a game called Sonic Skate. It's a skateboarding game with Sonic. There are gonna be six zones each with 2 acts and a boss, and it will use classic or modified Sonic 1/2 Genesis graphics.

Controls - Left and Right arrows control speed. A is jump.

Screens -
- Beginning of Act 1

- Cool Genesis Waterfall effect

Demo - http://img284.imageshack.us/my.php?image=sonicskate3qc.swf
This demo is all of Green Hills Act 1, but with no Badniks, No end sign, and no limit on lives. Please ignore the glitchy loop-de-loop. I'm working on it. Also, the spikes don't scatter your rings, just restart the level. I'm working on that too. See ya!

I'm making a Sonic Skating game in Flash. It will have somewhere around six zones, each with two acts and a boss. Graphics will be mostly Original or Sonic 2 edits, I think... but I might change it. I plan on having out a playable demo between 1 A.M and 4 A.M EST tomorrow. (I'm gonna be up all night). See it then!

Discussion / NCS GameCast
« on: June 11, 2006, 01:37:51 am »
Netterra Code Studios, or NCS, is a smallish division of Netterra that codes games. It's run by... me. And I am its sole employee. >_> Anyhow... I wanted to show people a little outline of my games that I am making, seeing as I often start multiple titles at once and then delay them as I get into something else, and people forget about my older ones. So here's the NCS Gamecast as of June '06. I'll update it when I start a new game.

Sephoral Series
Sephoral Smash - A Super Smash Bros.-esque fighting game with Sephoral characters.
Super Sephoral GP - A Mario Kart-esque racing game with Sephoral characters.
Sephoral Adventure - A side scrolling Sephoral adventure to reclaim the Mystic StarFruit.

Fan Games
Final Fantasy Legends III Plus - A remake of the original Gameboy game with FF6 graphics and a remixed soundtrack.
Final Fantasy Luna - An original Final Fantasy game, currently undeveloped. May run on FFLIII+ Engines.
Metroid Crimson - Samus has to stop the Metroid Infused Space Pirates from taking over the world in their HQ, a refurbished Chozo Ruin
Megaman Battle Network MX - A secret orginization called DarkStar has plans for NetCrime and a hidden "Prototype Internet"
Nascar MX 2006 - An overhead Nascar Racing game with real Nascar tracks and Drivers

Others
Fazo Duo - Ace and Fazo must work as a team to rid the mining world of evil Duo Clones.

All the games on my GameCast are being made in Flash MX 2004. I had a few projects in Game Maker for Windows such as Kirby Rebound and Zelda Links Awakening 2, but my Windows Hard Drive was deleted. and my Windows emulator broke down. If I get one of those Intel base Macs over the summer like I plan to, I'll install Windows on a Partition and try those games again. Any questions or comments about the games on my GameCast, feel free to ask me in the topic, or in a PM. Thanks for reading the June 06 NCS GameCast!

My Mom, Dad, and Aunt all went in to get me an my brother bikes after, like... seven years without bikes. I got a Blue Trek 820 that looks awesome and rides great. We went to this big nature reservation to try 'em out, and I was biking around like I rode just yesterday instead of seven years ago. There was this little jump that I kept going off until I crushed it inder my weight and almost fell off (the bike fishtailed and stuff, but I stayed on). That was cool stuff. n_n

Discussion / Fazo Duo (NEW SCREENSHOT!)
« on: May 19, 2006, 04:31:02 pm »
Backstory
Fazo is a game series in production by Moldrill (note that Fazo 1 is still in the works, but he has created the plot events all the way up to Fazo 7). As his brother I was eventually inspired to make a spinoff game. ;)

THE FAZO LEGACY:
???Fazo 1 chronicles the adventure a mining robot named Fazo who can change colors to defeat enemies and obstacles. Fazo needs to stop a ghost who is stealing resources from the Dulemere mines.

???Fazo is put out of work by a robot named Fazox, who is bigger, stronger, and more efficient; but is actually stealing Crystalite from the mines for his operator. Fazo invades Dulemere and puts a stop to that.

???Fazo gets an upgrade which lets him use a weapons system, and much more. He explores not only Dulemere, but multiple other mines in hopes of stopping an alien race called the Terites who are trying to survive by sealing off the mine tunnels for their nests. Fazo eradicates them.

???Fazox returns to Dulemere to a new labyrinth area of the mine to try and steal a cove of Crystalite inside. Smaller game, but in 3D.

The normal Fazo games continue from here with plot events such as Dulemere being destroyed, the entire mineing-based world crashing, etc... but using the theory of multiple universes I am able to put my spinoff in a more unchanging world! So begins Fazo Duo!

Story
Here begins Fazo Duo, the first Fazo Spinoff game.

It was a cold, dark morning. Ace hopped out of bed and threw on some fresh clothes. Glancing at the clock he noticed that it was 8:45. 15 minutes before a very important meeting that he was supposed to attend. He ran out the door and hopped on the shuttle train to his office at Dulemere Mines, five miles out of town. He arrived just in time for his meeting. At Dulemere Mines he had a pretty dull desk job, sorting papers and going over legal contracts for Mining Robot Usage. His boss asked him if he was familiar with the Fazo Unit, the most successful mining robot there was. Then his boss announced that he was to be Fazo's new operator. They ran Ace through some drills with Fazo in a demonstration mine and sent them off to the Dulemere mines to complete their first mission. In other placed, there was a program installed in many robots to create a limited "Duo" of the robot so that they could be slightly closer in productivity to the Fazo unit, but this program had an unforseen error, which after a while caused the Duo to abandon the original and cause chaos and destruction. Now, with Duos running rampant, will the new team of Ace and Fazo be able to save the world from being destroyed by itself?

Gameplay
The gameplay is all sidescrolling. You play as either Ace in the overworld or as Fazo inside the mining world. You are in the overworld by default, but you can send Fazo into the mining world by pressing the button over a shaft. Fazo can use color changing, his normal shot weapon, or secondary weapons sent to him by Ace. Ace can attack with a handgun.

Demos
Demo 1 - Play Online Now! - I know walking demos are boring, but don't complain. This took me longer that any other walking engine ever, because of the complicated animation and how he runs a little after you let go of the key. And although I didn't intentionally program it in, it seems that double-tapping the left or right key makes you run faster. Find any bugs and report them to me stat.

I just started drawing up Ace's neighborhood.

A MiniVersion of the final level from a ball-hit-paddle sorta keep it up game that I'm helping to make. But I don't expect any of you to be able to test it out. It only works on Mac. Too bad, but C+C on the Avatar.

Me, my brother, and my friend are redesigning the Sega Game Gear. We've got the case open and have about half the stuff removed from it (the thing's backlight is a florescent lightbulb tube! No wonder it uses so many batteries!). Now we're down to just about the Motherboard and we're wondering what stuff we could remove from it to make it smaller without ruining it. If you have any links, or if you know how to get the Motherboard out of the case, we'd really appreciate it. The GGnano will live!

The time has come for a Metroid Fangame to be made... in Flash MX 2004! Now with one demo and the story.

Story:
It was early in the morning. Samus was in her gunship, asleep, while it autopiloted back to Galactic Federation headquarters so she could give a mission summary. She woke to the sound of the ship's computer blaring. It was the sound of a distress call. Samus hit the accept button and her gunship changed course, heading to the largest station for lightyears; the Interplanetary Research Facility. As Samus entered the main hall, she noticed that something was wrong. There was nobody there, no alarms were sounding, and the station looked perfectly intact. As she continued through the facility, she saw a Space Pirate at a computer terminal. But it looked very different. As it turned and spotted her, she saw something very familiar about it. Its whole face looked as if it was made of a green, translucent, gelatinous substance with three pulsing cores attached to the outside by stringy looking veins. It hurried past Samus and fled the room. As she chased after it the loudspeaker came on and a pre-programmed voice announced that the station had been set to collide with a large planetary body that wasn't mapped on Galactic Federation star charts. Samus entered the docking bay and watched in horror as the Space Pirate flew away in her gunship. She ran for safety as the planet grew closer outside the station windows. Then there was darkness. Samus awoke in the main hall of IR facility. She stepped outside just as a thunderstorm was beginning. She was truely alone, and there wouldn't be anyone to help out this time.

Demos
-Demo 1: Run, Jump (in development), and Morph Ball. Just some engine testing.

So there you go. Metroid Crimson is well on its way. An engine demo and a story. Not featured here are 4 MIDIs (two slightly unfinished), and... oh, that's all else. Have fun and report any bugs please!

The time has come for a Metroid Fangame to be made... in Flash MX 2004! I actually revealed the first sprite of Samus in the game up in that banner. It's custom with slight influence from Super Metroid. But back on topic.

Story:
It was early in the morning. Samus was in her gunship, asleep, while it autopiloted back to Galactic Federation headquarters so she could give a mission summary. She woke to the sound of the ship's computer blaring. It was the sound of a distress call. So there's your story. It took me a while to build that with the chunks of plot that I showed you earlier. So I'm really getting somewhere, eh? I've got one sprite, 1 unfinished MIDI, one finished MIDI, and a story. :D I'll be making more stuff soon, including an engine, so be staying put.
