[GM6] External data?

Anyone know of any methods/links to sites with methods of storing external data? And I don't just mean having GM load sprites, sounds, etc from external sprite/sound/etc. files, I mean using .dat files or the like. Thanks, guys. :)

Use text files or ini files. Or the fastest, use binary files. They are all in the manual.

Eh? I'm wanting to store image/sound data in a compact format, not text data.

Thanks Bearer! While that is sexyawesome and will help me a lot, What I really want is a way to store all that dat without having all the files there, straight-out. I'd like them to be packaged in .dat files, or archives, or something similar. I'm currently using the method of storing them the way TRM is in that tutorial, but this would be easier for releasing demos and discouraging stealing (since much of the work for the game is custom).
