Hi everyone,
This is my first post here, but I've been a zelda fan for a long, long time. Some of my fondest gaming memories are of OOT and Link's Awakening/LTTP. Anyways, to make a long story short - I've always wanted to dabble in making a game combining the best of both worlds. My idea is to make a 3D zelda game - maybe one on the graphical caliber of OOT, but obviously not as complex..
I am a coder primarily for the Quake I engine. It is not the only engine I've ever worked with, but it's the one I'm most familiar with. Past/current projects of mine include megatf coop, quake-life, quake 4 fortress 1.5, and some minor bits of the game Nexuiz. Now many of you may think that a project on an engine as dated as Q1 would be insufficient for a zelda-type game, but i beg to differ. The Q1 community has developed engines these days capable of everything from realtime lighting and shadows to actual physics ala ODE. Obviously a zelda game doesn't need anything this fancy, but it's the little things in-between that count: Client-side camera panning, customizable HUDs, and menu support. Combine this with the ease-of-use of the Quake 1 programming language - QuakeC - and you have a winning combo right there to pull off a project like this without a whole dev team and 3 years of coding.
My proposal is this:
I'm willing to code the gameplay essentials if someone is looking for a coder. My only stipulation is that it must be on a Q1 engine (I'd go with DarkPlaces). As for models and maps, it would be Q3BSP and MD3 ideally, though many different model formats are supported if need-be.
I can do either a 3d spin on LTTP's top-down concept, or a camera similar to OOT's (or even a combination of both). tight butthole a project like this would probably need far more work in the model/map department than coding, depending on the complexity. Another good thing about coding a q1 project is that much of it may be adaptable to portables such as the PSP, seeing as there are several q1 psp engines in development.
Granted that you have modelers and mappers willing to work with that, and at least some semblance of a concept, leave me a message. Feel free to ask questions as well.
