Title: [Demo] Twinsen
Post by: .TakaM on November 16, 2006, 06:05:42 am
As some of you may or may not know, Ive been working on a platformer with my coder for about the last two months, we're very happy with how everything has progressed and the time has come for the first public demo.

but first, why is it called the 'Pilot Episode Demo'? because this game is a TV show, and features the first level as the pilot episode, the first level may change in the final game, just how the first episode in a TV show may be remade if the show gets picked up, time will tell. (http://img157.imageshack.us/img157/7840/2zc2.gif)

so, let me get on with it.
here are some screens:
(http://img175.imageshack.us/img175/1570/12mb9.png) (http://img80.imageshack.us/img80/8674/menubo4.png)[size=0]

[/size](http://img143.imageshack.us/img143/4739/13an6.png) (http://img97.imageshack.us/img97/9856/newscreenzx7.png)

what does the demo feature? play it yourself and find out! (http://img157.imageshack.us/img157/4716/4yc1.gif)
the controls are as follow:
    * f4 - toggle full screen
    * shift - run
    * z - jump
    * x - sword
    * c - magic ball
    * enter - start
    * arrow keys - move
but, if you have a controller, I highly suggest downloading joy2key (http://www.electracode.com/4/joy2key/JoyToKey%20English%20Version.htm) and playing the game with that (http://img90.imageshack.us/img90/3462/tuppu8.gif)

spend some time mastering the controls and how Twinsen moves and attacks, there are also a few secrets in the demo, if you don't figure them out after a few weeks, I'll tell you them (http://img241.imageshack.us/img241/8105/favelk5.gif) (http://img90.imageshack.us/img90/3462/tuppu8.gif)

Okay, heres the demo link:

(windows only sorry)
I'd really appreciate if some of you guys could mirror it also

Go ahead, I don't care. I love this demo. It's very smooth and very professional. So far I haven't encountered any bugs. This game looks very promising and shows great potential.

I love it!  :D
The graphics are simple but nice, and I love the way he attacks.
I saw that little dude in your avatar a while ago and I was wondering what it was, and now I know.

I love it! The combos are cool, I figured out an awesome way to kill the dragonflies(x while running, then X, then up X the other way)
As always .Takam's graphics are awesome! I finished it so know I need more!

Screenies look very nice, however whenever  run it I get the whole "unexpected error" thing. However, I think it's because I don't have enough free memory. I'll free some up and try again.

EDIT: Shut down Firefox, iTunes, and Photoshop, which I swear are the most memory-hogging programs on earth, and when combined create a demon that has no other purpose but to transform yur computer into a sluggish pile of crap, and played it again - and, WOW, you have acheived a completely professional quality - everything was nice and spiffy, but not too bloated or fancified, all the tiling is also like that, the sounds are awesome, and overall the whole thing just seems very professional. Honestly, if I had bought a GBA game and that was it, I would not have batted an eye. Even though I hate rating, I have to say, 10 out of 10 stars so far.

The only improvements I would suggest are:
-When he runs, have him get to max speed a little faster. It takes a pretty long strip to get to max speed, or what seems like it, and there aren't many opportunities to do that.
-Make the speed that he moves (sideways) when falling a little slower. I died numerous times because I dind't realize it and was too late to move in the opposite direction a few times.
-And ( though I assume this was already in the plan) replace the unoriginal sound effects with original ones.

I would actually suggest selling this game online once it is complete. It's incredibly good.

EDIT #2: Also, I uploaded it to my regular file host, not my server, but whatever. :P

I like it :)
Still, I don't know what does that character has with the storyline...
And I think the character should have more speed.
I'm waiting to see a new demo ;)

Yeah, it was kind of a weird jump from a "fantastic new reality show" to "BALD SAMURAI ACTION!". XD

Wow, I like you game a lot. I do have to agree that you should get the falling speed to be a little less because I died about five times while trying to play the game. As always the graphics are awesome, but when haven't your sprites looked good like that? Good Luck with the game!

Is this Twinsen supposed to be the same one as the one from Relentless and Twinsen's Adventure? Either way, looking really good so far, although...I absolutely suck at this game. D:

Alright first off, it looks amazing, very professional quality.  Secondly the menu is great, smooth as well and very fast load times.  I'm not really a fan of most platformers so it's not my favourite game, but I have loved some of the old Mario games, and I think I could love this for it's interesting plot and great game play, but the controls just seemed off.  (I played with my keyboard).  It's just a bit too clunky, but of course I see you can customize controls so that's great.  Also when jumping and landing I don't know if it was me or it was hard to tell if you were jumping too far or too little, that killed me several times.  Anyways I can't wait to see the rest of the episodes and good luck.

Of course as I expected, the visuals are great. What I don't love though is the combat - it is smooth, but when you do the combos (e.g. hold the arrow key while attacking) you slide forward and it seems weird to movements. It made me fall of the platform many times. I'd suggest making the sword longer too, it seems too short  and hard to hit people. And throwing the ball was weird...I couldn't really aim it and it just bounced around.

Post by: cb43569 on November 19, 2006, 01:17:25 pm
Wow, that was brilliant! Excellent graphics and excellent gameplay... I did, however, notice that many (if not all) sound effects were ripped from Zelda, and the intro music was obviously from Golden Sun.

I didn't like the fact that you slide a lot, and gain a lot of momentum, however. When defeating the Boko Baba-esque enemy, to jump onto the platform in the sea, I would need to get on the lower platform first, however my character "slipped" and fell wide.
I hope you understand what I mean :P...

Anyway, overall, great game :D! Can't wait for more from you ^-^.

Easy, just throw the balloon, and then use your sword to kill it.

Edit : Excuse my poor English level, I meant to say "ball", not "balloon". Thanks Sol for the heads up!

this game is made with speed runners in mind, the controls are going to be as complicated as they are, which really isnt very hard compared to say super metroid, but like super metroid once you master the controls the game feels so awesome.
that said, you slide forward when doing the combo so you dont stop moving , and if you slide off the edge of a cliff, if you can act quick enough you can combo back on the cliff to safety.
Wow, that was brilliant! Excellent graphics and excellent gameplay... I did, however, notice that many (if not all) sound effects were ripped from Zelda, and the intro music was obviously from Golden Sun.
I think only... 4 sounds are from zelda
almost everything are just place holders until we find a musician

thanks for the comments everyone

thanks again for all the comments guys, its been long enough to give tell the secrets:
( copy and paste to read)
the first secret as most of you should've figured out, the bush behind twinsen's house contains ten points

the second secret is if you kill all the enemies in reverse order (its quite hard at first but once you figure out a good way to do it, its easy) you get 999 points which unlocks some abilities like a quadruple running jump

:o. Now there's a trick to try (if I ever manage to finish the demo in normal order <_<) ;D!

Man, that is hard. I mnaged to defeat the enemies in reverse if I hit the plants with the ball but didn't kill them, but... nothing happened. v_v;; I guess you have to just avoid them.

I managed to do it, but the problem is the dragonflies follow you and get mixed up, so if the first dragonfliy passes the second one, you have to remember that before you kill them.

yeah it helps if you lure the first dragonfly to the start, use the ball to make him move and then lure him further ;)

and kame, after you knock the plants out with the ball you slash them with the sword to kill them

What I meant was that I got to the end of the level without killing anything, but I had to knock out he plants with the ball to do it. Although I think I messed up the dragonflies as well, so.. :\

and break each season into a separate exe that is compatible with past season save files, just so the load time at the game startup isn't too long (http://www.zfgc.com/forum/Smileys/takam1/wink.gif)

liked the few dynamics there were, so it was playable
ball must be new, should have been more controls to make the ball go where you want it to

like I said in the first post, it feels much better if you download and use joy2key and use a gamepad, everyone should already have joy2key because it is great for any game that wont let you change the controls. and speaking of changing the controls, eventually the controls will be customizable in Twinsen (though not in the next demo)

and the ball throwing system will be changed for a later demo (8 directions, hold to power up) running double jump will also be a bit different later

heres another screen showing off the new sun that has a ridiculous amount of layers:

The Game looks very good, i dont know twinsen or how it will be played... but from the twinsen screens in google would i think that your style looks ALOT better... (both, the mockup and the platformer )..

one thing...: do your "programer" use gamemaker? cause it doesnt work on vista

yeah its just game maker, and although the official twinsen games dont look too hot by todays standards theyre still 2 of the greatest games ever, the first especially.

and I made a video showing how easy it is to kill the enemies in reverse order in level 1 and get 999 points, plus I was showing some of the new stuff thats been changed/added

Awesome - I just managed it, you're right, it was so easy once I did it - although I did it a bit differnet form you int he trailer. Also, the sun looks great, and the new level looks amazing. Glad to see some rather Sonic-like non-linear levels in store. can't wait for a new release. Probably sounds like heresy to the ears of many here, but to me this is way more exciting than OOT2D. But then, I'm a platformer fan for the most part.

my coder is so great, hes made a gameshark like thing so I can put in codes that can alter the code while Im playing, I turned on invincibility and spawned a couple hundred dragonflies to test the engine:
(http://img65.imageshack.us/img65/9659/dragonfliesky6.png)
I got no lag whatsoever, the game used to lag just when I could see twinsen's shadow in level 2, but he figured out a genius way to do it much better, and even with all those dragonflies all following me moving in their own directions- no lag.
It looks so cool in motion, and even better when I killed every singe one in one swipe (http://www.zfgc.com/forum/Smileys/takam1/grin.gif)

Title: Re: [Demo] Twinsen - Story Help
Post by: .TakaM on April 07, 2007, 12:11:46 pm
ok guys, I need help working out the story

basically, here's what I have decided so far:
Quote
for some reason, Twinsen's planet's magical energy has been pushed to the surface, breathing life into everything (hence the plant enemies etc), after learning this, Twinsen sets off to visit his good friend and inventor Baldino to see if there's something he can do.
Baldino makes a contraption that absorbs the energy dispelled when Twinsen defeats an enemy into Twinsen's body.

as you can see, a lot is missing.
I want to keep the story relatively simple and non linear, so people don't have to collect all the energy, infact they can get by with collecting no energy.

so maybe something like, someone has pushed the energy to the surface so they can collect it, and whatever Twinsen hasn't collected, he gains it once he defeats this guy, but obviously, this guy's strength will be in relation to how much energy he has gathered, and how much Twinsen hasn't

what this means, is I plan on dropping the ant farm and the TV show aspect, they were limiting the level design and the way the story could progress.

so please guys, I need some help with ideas
Title: Re: [Demo] Twinsen - Story Help
Post by: Moldrill on April 07, 2007, 02:07:12 pm
Some kind of magical staff should have pushed the planets enegy to the surface when it was stolen by some manic King who wants to destroy Twinsen's world. To do this the King would have to take the staff from where he found it on one side of the world to the Chaos Temple on the other side.
On another note Twinsen sets off to visit his good friend Baldino the inventor to ask him about all the living things that shouldnt be living. Baldino makes a contraption that absorbs the energy dispelled when Twinsen defeats an enemy into Twinsen's body. He also tells Twinsen about the King who has stolen the Magical Staff. Twinsen now worried that his world may end soon sets out to destroy the King and halt his journey before he reaches the Temple of Chaos.

So now Twinsen would have a timer to show where the King is on one side and where the Temple is on the other. You get a game over when the timer runs out. Twinsen has to go around the world to try and beat the King to the Temple. When you do it would show the King walking up to the Temple where you fight him inside.
Title: Re: [Demo] Twinsen - Story Help
Post by: NickAVV on April 07, 2007, 10:11:09 pm
I'll build off of yours Taka. Twinsen is out exploring when a massive earthquake shakes the world. The earthquake shakes all of the planet's energy out onto the surface, bringing things to life. But without energy, the planet will die! So Twinsen heads off to Baldino's house to see if there's anything he can do. Then he gets the machine to capture energy. The planet has a certain amount of time before it will die from lack of energy, so you either beat the game before that time runs out, or extend your remaining time by dispelling your collected energy back into the planet at the Shrine of Poiya (name subject to change). Enemies would give you some energy, and bosses would give you a bunch. Sound good?

Baldino makes a contraption that absorbs the energy dispelled when Twinsen defeats an enemy into Twinsen's body. but Twinsens Brother is very  jealous and wants to obtain power of his own and prove to his brother he's better . so where does Twinsen's brother get power from the forbidden city from a man Eivalen who does forbidden techniques to get what he wants. In return Twinsen's brothers body will serve as a sacrifice for Eivalens Evil plan to destroy Twinsen's planet and rebuild it so he rules with no rebels and starts a planet under his rule. Now whats left for Twinsen to do? stop his brother and show that even though Twinsen is getting power they are still family and to stop Eivalen from manipulating Twinsen's brother so he can succeed in his diabolical plan..

what do you think?

I think you should learn to spell. :P Seriously though, your story sounds kinda cliché. And do you really know what seducing means, because.. lol.

You could always take time to make sure you've made good spelling and grammar in a post before you hit the post button. Or get Firefox 2x, which automatically spell-checks your posts and underlines incorrect words in red like Microsoft Word. Trust me, people will respect you more if you can type correctly.

Bleh, you just need some sort of 'master' that could be a final boss, a magical item etc. that once destroyed, releases all the energy.

what if baldino had already made an energy contraption machine, but this one was so strong that it pushed all the energy to the surface and with that it became living itself. This Super Contraption machine could be the final boss.

the story will be something like this:

For some reason, Twinsen's planet's magical energy has been pushed to the surface, breathing life into everything (hence the plant enemies etc), after learning this, Twinsen sets off to visit his good friend and inventor Baldino to see if there's something he can do. There he finds out that Baldino can help, because he knows what's causing the energy movement: his own far too powerful ECM (Energy Contraption Machine). Then Baldino makes a second version of the ECM, which is less powerful, for Twinsen. With this little tool, Twinsen can gather the magical energy, and defeat the Super ECM. When this Super ECM is destroyed all of the Magical Energy will be released and the planet will be saved.

EDIT:
Another possible story:
After electrocuting Frunfrock, Frunfrock became a soul, one of the Sendells of the planet Twinsun. But Frunfrock is still active as a Sendell, with his power he pushed all the energy towards the surface and to itself. Because of this Frunfrock became living again and still wants to rule over Twinsun.
After learning that his worlds energy has been moved, Twinsen sets off to visit his good friend and inventor Baldino to see if there's something he can do. Baldino makes a contraption that absorbs the energy dispelled when Twinsen defeats an enemy into Twinsen's body.
