Seriously,I know no one really jumps up and down for them but why
won't anyone make old school story and menu driven games anymore...Blue Dragon blows
so it doesn't count...I mean like realistic graphics and a hugely developed plot...
Something like FF6 or Xenosaga....

Trusty Bell/Eternal Sonata is a turn-based RPG... but at the same time it's also action battle (its strange :P)

Theres always Final Fantasy XIII to look forward to.

EDIT:  If you want a fantastic story-driven RPG, I highly suggest you play Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic :)

EDIT2:  Brave Story: New Traveler for the PSP looked like a pretty good RPG.

Well if you want that nostalgic feeling... If you have a gamecube or dreamcast, maybe try out Skies of Arcadia.  (I also reccomend Grandia 2 for the dreamcast or PS2)

You should try Saga Fronteir 2, though I only recommend it if you have patience with the battle system.

As for new old school rpgs, I think we only have indie developers to look forward to. And thankfully, with the Rpgmaker community, we'll always have some kind of semi-old school game to look forward to.

Final Fantasy XIII to look forward to.

That's one RPG I'm not looking forward to; judging by 12, this game has a good chance of turning out badly. (shiva turning into a motorcycle. wtf.)

Golden Sun works like the RPGs of old.

I don't play a lot of RPGs, mainly because I'm more interested in gameplay than storyline. Which is pretty much why I stick to Pokemon... Golden Sun is kind of fun, and Final Fantasy could have more focus on gameplay. I would like to get into EarthBound.

But yeah, oldschool RPGs are most certainly dead.

White Knight Story (PS3)
Lost Odyssey (Xbox360)
Shin Megami Tensei (PS3 and/or Wii)
DQIX (DS)

Those are currently the big classic JRPGs for the next-gen systems that I can think. It's pretty meager right now. I think a lot of developpers in Japan are waiting out to see how the console wars turn out. A lot of those smaller RPG developpers are still making stuff for the PS2. It's now shifting towards the DS, and, possibly, to the Wii.

I know of DQ9...But I mean old school as in...run around...oh !@#$% random battle...
Then the battle screen comes up and you have either turns or a ATB gauge...Then you get your experience...blah..blah...

Why do you care? I personally think that's boring, except in the case of CT.

Well, fortunately (or rather unfortunately in your case), the RPG genre is evolving and expanding. No longer is every game the same old Final Fantasy formula. Instead, there are new and fresh battle systems, and those annoyingly random battles are becoming a thing of the past. As much as you guys hate the FFXII Gambit system, I thought it was a wonderful combination of pre-planning and quick-thinking. I am also really intrigued and pleased by Eternal Sonata's battle system, and my favorite RPG battle system is still Xenogears'.

But if you still need the old school RPG feel, pick up one of the many ports or remakes of the classics. Shining Force, an amazing tactical RPG, just hit the VC. I'd say pick it up if you've got $8 to spare.

Fix'd.

I disagree, Swiftu. First of all, I support the gaming industry. Second of all, Shining Force is a classic, and I would gladly pay $8 dollars for it.

I agree with both you, I would gladly pay 8$ (£4) for it if I had the machine it's on, but I'd rather emulate it cause its easier, and I don't have a megadrive/genesis..

IF your looking for an old school rpg though, could always try etrian odyssey, if you can buy it anywhere. That is a REALLY old school RPG for the DS. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem I can import it from anywhere for cheap, so I'm stuck emulating it.
Plus it only came out earlier this year.
