Title: -The Legend of Zelda: Soulkeepers Lyre-
Post by: Sinkin on November 01, 2011, 11:52:00 pm
(http://oi57.tinypic.com/2ist4ib.jpg)

- Prologue -

A long time ago, in the desperate times of order and chaos, an unknown evil was born within the sacred heart of Hyrule. With no warning, the evil strikes to take control over the order and chaos for the golden land. But luckily the goddesses heard the calls from the people in Hyrule and they sent down the Royal Soulkeeper with his Lyre to take back the control and banish the evil from Hyrule. The people was grateful and lived in peace, until one day...

- Concept -

So, last week I felt a big urge to do something, something creative. Something I could work on and be happy over. And I decided to make a Zelda game, a Zelda game that had a new fresh idea. So for the last couple of days I've been thinking about different ideas that would be good to combine the Zelda universe with and I think I have a good idea that could work.

What I had in mind for a good concept is quite simple and yet original. This game will work of the organic life in Hyrule (might change the name of the world). By the organic life I mean the weather etc, and to have control over this the player will receive a magical lyre. And by learning songs, the player can make it start raining, snowing and such things. The lyre will also play a big part in the dungeons, along with the new item that you will get. I haven't decided yet how many dungeons there will be yet, but a good amount would lay around four dungeons. I will also implant a upgrading system similar to the one in Skyward Sword.

The Legend of Zelda and all associated trademarks are the property of Nintendo.
All original assets are the property of Team Bombflowers and are not to be used without permission.

Sorry for bumping it, but I have started working on the story, dungeon layouts and items. So be ready for an update soon.

I like the idea sounds interesting. I like the idea of the upgrading system like Skyward Sword, I too am planning on using that system in the game I'm working on.

That's good to hear!

Anyways, I got a small update before the big one. So the idea came to me today, I need something so the player can move quick and fast between areas and what not. But I didn't want to bring Epona into this game and so I got a perfect match. It's a creature which looks like a bird/ostrich. And as a bonus to this update a made a little concept art of the creature.

Dude, your ostrich looks nice.
That sounds silly, but that is some good art, and it's good with the style of Zelda concept art we've seen in recent games, with that little curly swirl on the back of the saddle.

Anyway, your game sounds promising, but what exactly does the Soulkeeper's Lyre control? And what is a lyre, haha. It seems like, from what you've said so far... Oracle of Seasons? You said the game revolves around organic life, which you explained as weather, etc, and then gave other examples of weather, so... what exactly is etc? I mean, I know it stands for etcetera, but what things are included with that?

Also, I liked the old logo way better, with the harp instead of the sword and shield. It looked much more customized to your game, this one looks more generic.

Nice art!  I think it is cool...  But I can't help but think...  Chocobo, which is hard for me to see in a zelda game.  I suppose it could be done though.  I have to admit though this Chocobo looks way cooler than any one from FF for sure!  I like it a lot!
Title: Re: -The Legend of Zelda: The Soulkeeper's Lyre-
Post by: Sinkin on November 20, 2011, 05:59:01 pm
@Aero88: Thanks! I know it may feel a bit odd but I can assure you that I'm going to make it fit into the Zelda universe. Don't worry  ;)

@Donotfeedthemax: I guess I should explain a bit more. What I meant by organic life is much more than just the weather, as this lyre goes under the name Soulkeeper's Lyre, it can control souls of animals. Which will come in hand in parts of the game, for example, let's say that there is a house you need to get into but the key is in the locked house. By taking control over a cat, you can sneak in by the chimney to take the key and return it to Link. I hope that information gave some more.

Now to the update. I have most of the basic things done to start off the project with, such as story, characters, items and such. And I have darklink45 to help me along with the sprites that will be needed for this project. Oh by the way, the style is completely custom and is looking really sweet and will put this game into a more original position. I am also happy to present that the game will feature some completely new items. Nothing to show yet, but keep checking for updates.

Third post in a row... Not good, sorry.

Anyways, a small little update with a quick sketch of a new race that's going to be in the game. I don't have name for it yet, but they live in the Faron Woods and is playing a pretty big role in the game.

What you have here so far seems like a really solid concept, and I'd love to see it developed further.

Is this going to be 2-D, 21/2-D, or 3-D?
Title: Re: -The Legend of Zelda: The Soulkeeper's Lyre-
Post by: Sinkin on December 20, 2011, 09:48:19 am
@Arcaith: Thanks! As for right now, the game is in an early stage of development. There is a lot of work to do on the graphic side right now, but I'll keep you guys updated when the first screenie will pop up!

@RetroRespecter: It's going to be all 2-D.

Wow, that really pops out :O The cliff could use a little bit more colour depth to it, though. Love the grass :3
Link's palette is nice, too.

edit: One criticism though; it might get a little overbearing after extended periods of play. Its a very strong colour set in general. Perhaps just tone the background tiles down a liiiittle bit.

Thanks! Darklink45 and I are happy with the graphics so far, but I'll play around with palette a bit.  :)

The graphics look pretty nice so far, but like Arcaith mentioned, tone the colors down a bit. Maybe with just the grass would be enough?

I'm intrigued by the concept, but I'm going to be honest, what drew me to your thread was your logo art. :)  The main log in your sig is very nice, but I really like your logo art in the link picture 3 posts above mine - where it's kind of faded and all.  Can you explain how you did that?
Title: Re: -The Legend of Zelda: Soulkeepers Lyre-
Post by: Sinkin on December 31, 2011, 01:26:20 pm
@Ishmayl: I guess I can PM you on how I did, just to keep this topic clean and ontopic.

Anyways, we have a new wall and grass design with a better palette and a more Skyward Sword-ish style.

There are so many ambitious creations on here, this is among one of such creations. It certainly feels original in comparison to most fangames around due to it's unique graphical style. I think it looks very good so far and I hope to see the progress of such a Skyward Sword inspired project.

Is it time for an update? Yes, I think so! The project is still alive, the progress have just been a bit slow. We are getting closer to an alpha version of the game, we are still working on the story and overall design. So what we can show you guys is a little sneak peak at our latest version of the graphics, which looks awesome.

Stay tuned for more info!

The small previews look really good! I like the detail you put into the tiles and I really love the palette. When can we expect a full man? :D

Just wondering, what is this being made in?

And like the fact that you makes new items, enemies instead of taking some old enemies.

I think that this game is gonna be great! :)

Title: -The Legend of Zelda: Soulkeepers Lyre- REBORN
Post by: Sinkin on June 11, 2014, 09:55:00 am
Wow, almost two years since I updated this topic. Well, the good news is that this project is still alive but the progress is veeeeeeeeeeery slow at the moment. There are some reasons to but mainly because of the graphics, it is so hard to create a new style that is interesting, beautiful to look at and at the same time keeping it close to the art of Zelda. But I like that challenge, it keeps me motivated and I get more experience in making sprites!

SO! Now when that is out of the way, I can talk a little bit about where I want to take this "fan game". As some of you guys might know, I have been jumping around a lot between different projects. First there was my ever first game idea "Mask of Sheikah", then it was my own OoT2D, then it was back to "Mask of Sheikah", some time after that I got on board with Team Dekunutz and worked on the Oot2D project. My time with Team Dekunutz was amazing, awesome people to work with and A LOT of experience. I want to personally thank all the guys over at Team Dekunutz for the amazing time we had. If the project will ever be picked up again, I will with no doubt get back on and work my ass off! And I'm here, alone with my very own project that I'm extremely proud off. The amount of time I have put in this is way more that I could have imagined. THIS is the project I have been craving to do for so long and the thing that held me back was the lack of experience but now I feel that I will be able to pull this off and make this the next big "fan game" that everyone will talk about. I hope at least...

ANNNNNNNND NOW, ladies and gentlemen, I present to you the new look for The Soulkeeper's Lyre!

Just curious, is that just a mockup or a screenshot from a somewhat working engine?

I think the path could use a little more roughness to it. Maybe some bumps and small rocks. Feels like the detail in the trees, plants, and rocks is overkill compared to the simplicity of the path. I love the details in everything though, so it'd be cool to bring up the path to that level of detail. The grass could use just a slight bit more detail in places too, but it seems very nice for the most part. Also, the rocks really need some shadow to fit with the other shadows, and/or maybe a little bit of grass around the bottoms to help it settle in the landscape and not feel like it's popping out too much. Of course, I expect you aren't done with all this yet, so maybe I'm critiquing too much, ha ha. Always been a fan of your art and sprite works.
Title: Re: -The Legend of Zelda: Soulkeepers Lyre-
Post by: Sinkin on June 11, 2014, 05:11:18 pm
It's a mock up ;)

Everything is still a work in progress, trees, grass, and the dirt path. Details is everything for me, especially when creating a new style that will bring this game to the next level. The basic tiles are about 60% done and as I said, the progress is very slow right now but I'm going to have 6 weeks off work this summer so that will probably speed things up a little bit :)

And thanks for the kind words Frozen, I'm happy that I have a fan :')

EDIT: Updated the sneak peak from my previous post!

Time for a small update!

So, I'm currently working on a early build of the engine. At this time it only got walking, working life bar, wallet, moving clouds and rain effect! It's not a lot of things, but I'm working as fast as I can and it's kinda slow, since it's a one-man-project. So the next things to add is rolling, swimming, lifting/throwing and pushing, which will not take that much time! Then I will move on to the combat part of the engine, and as soon that is done I will release a tech demo of the engine :)

Is that all? No, I got one more thing! I have been thinking of entering this years NCFC with this project so I'm going to work my ass off to make it as beautiful as possible both visual and gameplay. So there will be a lot of updates in the future!

Thanks guys! High quality is what I'm going for ;)
I have some pretty good stuff I've been kicking around, but I have to finalize it before I can show anything. The main thing I have in mind with this project is to make it more like a completely new Zelda game, by that making new items, races, NPC's, enemies and such.

I guess I can post a small update on this!

As of right now, progress is slow. I had to go through surgery for a broken finger on my right hand two weeks ago, so pain and a minimal amount of sleep makes it hard to focus. But it doesn't stop me from trying to make stuff done!

In the current state of the game, I'm doing a deep overlook on what I can do to make this game beautiful and well made in terms of dungeons, the flow of the game and assets. All the small details are very important and noticeable! I might even go so deep that I might have to recruit one or two people to help me! Which will probably happen...

ANYWAY, down below is an example of what kind of details I'm looking into right now!
