Title: Zelda II Side-Scroll Link WIP (currently looking for feedback/help)
Post by: Theforeshadower on November 18, 2012, 07:24:26 am
I started this update to the side-scrolling sprite of Link from Zelda II.  I felt content with the face and sword.  The body lighting seems a bit off and the legs are just :X.  I can't quite figure it out.  I think it has something to do with the original sprite and how the legs appear ambiguous because they are the same shades so I don't know which leg is in front and which is in the back :/

Anyway, I'm no spriter anyway.  I chose my palette from a 9-bit color range image.  I like it, but if you have a better color for something, I am open to it.  I really want to get the legs/feet figured out then try to smooth out the body lighting better and work on the arm.

Any ideas?

I'm no spriter, not by any means, but from what I can tell based on my limited knowledge they look pretty damn good.

Bah, you posted before I uploaded my last concept for the legs.  I dunno... The original sprite is just weird to revamp for me since there is no shading on it so either leg could be defined as the leg closer to the screen.

Updated first post with this gif.  The arm seems a touch off as does the sword.

You might want to add a few more frames to smooth out the walk cycle. At the moment, it's very halting.

Halting?  Are you talking about when he isn't walking?  I put idle frames in there to show the transition from walking to idle.  Unless I am not understanding o.0

Halting as in, it looks jerky. Was having trouble finding the right word before.

Ah.  Well, it's the exact same sequence as the original sprite from Zelda II.  :/  I could look into adding extra frames but it's virtually the same as the original.

I think it looks fine :/ as TFS said, it's the same as the original.

I don't see how a few extra frames could fix the halting. I think he's referring to the slightly faster frames(the gif with the white background). Just using the "original image" really doesn't exclude it from looking jerky. It could look like that based on the fact that the original artist had to work with the system constraints at the time. Anyways.. I could only see Arcaith's input as being true if you were to cycle the frames as fast as the white-background gif. The pink-background gif seems perfectly fine.  I think also Link's overall posture gives him a stiff-esque look, which may also be why Arcaith thinks the animation loop is "jerky". There are frames showing an entire footstep on both legs, how many more frames could you possibly add to that anyways? I think jerkyness would be encouraged by adding extra frames just because there's less frames to interpolate at the speed TFS has the pink one going. And if you add more to the white-background gif, slowing Link down would look funky. I could be wrong, but based on how I visualized this in my head, you are fine as you are TFS. Until I'm proven wrong, at least. ;p
