Song from Blaster Master, NES, World 1

not nearly as good as their good ones, but at least it was fun making it
originally wanted from intro, but couldnt find the melody

Audio / Gonzo's revived trance topic
« on: August 02, 2008, 08:19:34 pm »
What's there to say...
I haven't really made any trance lately because I've been helping out with someones ingenious synth.
Actually I've been making instruments for him resulting in even shorter music than ever before.

http://commandante.fwsnet.net/quicksilver_3.mp3 don't ask, good, but couldve been better

http://commandante.fwsnet.net/angelbeat_2.mp3 my personal favorite of the late 2008.. enjoy .)

Here's one that wasn't so short, sadly though its not that good:
http://commandante.fwsnet.net/nadjamena.mp3

I'll be posting any good stuff if it comes my way (I'm having a good day) etc. :)

Played portal? I loved it so Fing much i had to make a little song :P
Portal ending: http://commandante.fwsnet.net/stillalive_2.mp3

Hopefully ill be able to edit out the bad eggs when i make better music...
Im hoping to step up the quality of my song making by combining my awesome instruments with actual song content etc.
I know its not my best trait right now; content that is... cheers

As early as you can remember, you were playing a game and suddenly you came to a boss
Someone who clearly needed quick reaction and alot of adrenaline to cover
Which is the scariest encounter youve had?

Thinking back mine must be the first boss in Super Mario Bros 1
Scary as hell! But also very very easy
I think i was jumping up and down alot before i realized i had to go past him :P

Audio / Gonzo's Trance howto in FLStudio
« on: April 21, 2008, 04:34:59 pm »
Making a SIMPLE better off alone remix
To make things quicker, we'll use a MIDI: http://fwsnet.net/mp3/betteroff2.mid
I use midis sometimes, im not good at making my own music, nor at laying it all out, but i love making instruments (and im good at that)
theres many things that make a good musician, especially if youre making music on a computer
see, first off you have the basic song, then you have a beat, sub-leads, pads, arps, other instruments that fill out any void
in most trance you start off with the basic beat
listen to this song for reference: http://fwsnet.net/mp3/gonzo-betteroffalone_4.mp3
other things that you have to work with to make a song:
the layout: how it starts, music patterns and volume increasings to fade parts/instruments in
patterns are basically notation, however it can be notation for many instruments, and this makes patterns ideal for beats since you can have part of your entire beat in a single pattern and just paint it onto the songs "playout", which is the playlist
the sound: equalizing sound, sometimes an individual instrument, and always on the master fx channel the entire song
the latter (master channel) is called mastering the song, because youd want it to have a good sound
the first thing youll learn in sound theory is that low sounds have less volume that high sounds, ie. a high pitched scream is heard miles away if loud enough, which is why we all have babies crying :P

anyways, bring up FL, drag the midi onto it and accept
4 channels
you should be able to identify the first channel as the lead instrument, the actual song notation
the second channel is the bassline.. its a simple but effective bass, classic dance, but somewhat boring :)
the third is an arp, but its notation arping, so you cant really mess with it unless you modify the notation
and the fourth is the rythm. the kick
this song has a strange rythm, so we will be using channel 4 to make the percussion (beat samples)

you should be familiar with adding instruments, and z3ta+ is a must have for anyone who makes electronic music
its also good if you have Vanguard (which is strictly a trance/dance VSTi) (VSTi = virtual synthesis instrument)
you should also have Morphine which comes with FL (though it costs money) :)

start another FL, and open this package (if you have the aforementioned instruments)
http://fwsnet.net/mp3/betteroffalone(alternative).zip
i used no FX, but on the master channel for leveling sound properly (ideally this is done on a per channel basis)
and added compression at the end of the queue (see the fx master channel)
i also didnt use any automation or any transitions, just basic instruments and basic patterns lined up to make the song flow from A->B

however, i modified all the original presets, as all modern VST's have internal effects and even equalizers, it makes my work easier
as you can see by the channel names they all match a factory preset for each individual VSTi
i have no idea where to start on this, there was alot of modifying going on... and i probably cant recreate it :-X

there is alot of thought to be put into how you use your instruments
see the single piano note pattern, that is a basic grand piano preset, with a long release time and a predelayed reverb that hits the release at a certain time after each note which makes it sounds like it comes back a little :)
if you dont know what the release time is for you should look it up
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ADSR_envelope
its THE most important part of modern instruments, as it affects 100% how your instrument plays a single note
a long release time makes your instrument fade out its sound after a note is released (the sound is over),
and for example if a delayed reverb effect hits the fading out sound it makes that instrument sound warm and cozy :P
Listen to it here: http://fwsnet.net/mp3/betteroffalone(piano).mp3

i will put more effort into this later, maybe when i start on a new project and i make notes on what i do line by line
have a listen to the result of 30mins work: http://fwsnet.net/mp3/betteroffalone(alt).mp3

more to come,
will post screenshots in future :)

Discussion / So I've been reading...
« on: January 06, 2008, 06:18:22 pm »
I've been reading alot about the current change from microsoft's side
about how what languages im going to program in in the future, ie. when
im going to start on a new platformer project to emulate super mario world etc.

Apparently its a monetary gain for microsoft to abandon just about everything theyre making every other year
Im still using VB6 to the fullest, minimal VB6 API maximal W32API.. and C when i need it
Ill probably be using C only from now on...
Collections (.add .remove) can be done using a simple array.. blabla

What im getting at is,
C will probably not die, and although im an expert at the old DX7 i guess i need to looking seriously at OpenGL
not sure how easy it will be to create a 2D game in it, but everythings hard when you start with something
entirely new to you.

Sad really, that youre learning something from scratch only to see it become more and more useless
My current game project (DM) is extremely fast, quite in opposition to the general misguided beliefs about VB6

I might just use DX7 and C instead.
Because as a retro game programmer reaching out to retro gamers, DX7 will never go uninstalled.
Or will it?

Another important question for me is, can i write directly to the screen from OpenGL?
I love to make cool effects by hand... especially since i dont have to use constant alpha
and im not really into tga or png... or is there another way? like applying an alpha array

Zelda Projects / [FULL] Dungeon Master Engine
« on: January 01, 2008, 09:37:38 pm »

So, the engine is finally being released
Builds are daily, and requests are considered.
If you are interested in making a highly advanced TLoZ/like game, and you have experience with scripting
take a look at:
http://dm.fwsnet.net/

Im in the process of releasing documentation and tutorials for the engine -
As well as upgrading tools that will assist in creating content for the engine.

Note that you have to read through my tutorials before asking any questions
and if you have no experience with filetypes, spriting, coordinate systems, etc.
you will have a hard time making a game. This is not a point and click, copy and paste engine.

Some videos from what IM doing:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=KuFbAYpsbho newest, palette system added
http://youtube.com/watch?v=lFIofYCGShA after i added mounts support, no abilities yet though.. later
http://youtube.com/watch?v=l3d0AVHbNPk demo for a supposed final battle, but not very awesome
http://youtube.com/watch?v=ZdTJJZ7UjvA some super-old feature demo map

the actual game is being made from this moment on
the engine is decent enough to start doing some real heavy mapworking and scripting
there will be no demos, except for beta testers
however there might be some screens now and then.. we'll see

story? to be revealed in the loooooooooong run

Zelda Projects / [WIP/DEMO] DM: LTTP (Vista compatible!)
« on: December 14, 2007, 06:55:06 pm »

- Over the bridge

- Under the bridge

- Various enemies

- Fire spreads!

- The editor

Full LTTP, no mixed, but some updated graphics :o
Made in VB6 and C for dll's
Octo planar, supporting diagonals and gliding
Multilayered (nicer tiling) and multifloored, allowing link to go over a bridge with enemies and assorted interactives beneath
31 items, currently 24 fully implemented (unbalanced) working items
4 fully playable suits allowing for different kinds of gameplay
Jumping, falling, drowning, diving, rolling, flying, hooking, lifting, throwing, dieing... blabla
Enviroments like snow, rain, dark rooms/caves/dungeons, fog layer and windy desert sand (currently)
Music, ambience, stereo distance effects (like closing in on a waterfall) and alot of fx sounds
Fully scripted engine, meaning I can pretty much make the entire world inside a single map, though what would the point be
Pretty good AI for enemies, non hostiles and support for different kinds of enemies like digging, flying, teleporting
Particle system for well... sprite particles
Pushable and liftable objects in any size and what not.. Once did a house ala. four swords.. real nice :P
Decent editor for any kind of mapmaking, though scripting in an advanced text editor is mandatorym ie. Crimson Editor
(Keyword files always included in package)
Menu with item, bottle and suit selection (revamped in progress)
Minimap with information sprites

TODO LIST:
1. finish the green guard type enemy completely!
2. make pulling mechanics, for pulling objects aka. bricks
3. remake the entire menu system a) items b) suits(armor) c) gloves(str) d) shoes(speed,swim,...)
4. havent thought about things this far :P its quite a list already - code-wise
but id have to say start thinking about the actual game itself, a title for instance!

Going to finish some stuff in the engine before venturing into the world
And i dont have a story, nor will i have in the short term future

Testing demo:
http://dm.fwsnet.net/DMLttP3.rar (Run DM-DBG.exe!)
Dieing added :)
Want to test? Test, respond here, and thanks in advance

It seems more people are trying to make serious engines to simulate zelda games, which is great
though theyre 10000 lightyears away from the DM engine, im still going to climb another wall :P
so im making multiplayer support, and the first map will be ala. enemy waves coming in
levels, items blabla.. all that jazz.. mad fun really

when? dont know, next week maybe

This is a slap -> duel situation

http://anime-4ever.org/mp3/Pianoism.mp3

sadly ive lost the source, i think you use FL too
so i wouldve uploaded the .flp, but when windows doesnt start up and you have to format
no amount of tears help... ill remake this whenever (EDIT: i found the source, its abit older)
(i used sytrus / grand piano on both)

i listened to a song when i got this idea, so if its idea stealing or not, i cant remember
to be fair, lets just compete over quality of work...
but this is old, and its not the latest version i made when i had to format
its just a mp3 i once sent to a friend

i also remade the LBA2 theme once (dont know if ive already posted this)
http://anime-4ever.org/mp3/LBA2.mp3
have source, but this is my pride :P (if you want the MIDI i have it!)

i had a go at your Luin tune too... but it turned out !@#$%
http://anime-4ever.org/mp3/Luin_4.mp3
i might try to finish it once and for all i hate unfinished things
