Not quite. Because then you have a single piece of something, sandwiched between... itself? It's weird.

It has to consist of at least three seperate pieces: two outer pieces which are the same or very similar, and a "filling". I suppose the outer parts don't really have to be bread though.

It doesn't have to have a top and bottom piece that are similar. When people cut a loaf of bread in half and put filling in the middle of them, but the pieces aren't completely separated, it's still considered a sandwich.

What, like a submarine sandwich? With the two pieces joined by a "hinge" of uncut bread?

They still effectively act as two seperate pieces of bread, but that's stretching the definition quite a bit.
