A sandwich has to have two, seperate pieces of bread enclosing both sides of it.

Hence the term "sandwiched".

The contents of a pizza are not "sandwiched", therefore a pizza is not a sandwich.

WTF why'd I put that in Gaming and Entertainment? Whatever.

@ Pyru: Flip the pizza over on itself. Instant sandwich.

Not quite. Because then you have a single piece of something, sandwiched between... itself? It's weird.

It has to consist of at least three seperate pieces: two outer pieces which are the same or very similar, and a "filling". I suppose the outer parts don't really have to be bread though.

Ok, then all you'd have to do is cut the pizza slice in half and fold it on itself.

Ok, then all you'd have to do is cut the pizza slice in half and fold it on itself.

But then you'd need a third, different piece in the middle.

Like a hamburger.

Now that would be awesome.

A pizza burger sandwich.

It doesn't have to have a top and bottom piece that are similar. When people cut a loaf of bread in half and put filling in the middle of them, but the pieces aren't completely separated, it's still considered a sandwich.

What, like a submarine sandwich? With the two pieces joined by a "hinge" of uncut bread?

They still effectively act as two seperate pieces of bread, but that's stretching the definition quite a bit.

But they are still one piece. ;)

*Ahem*  If you cut a pie in half and put one piece on top of the other, it's still a pie, not a sandwich.  And a pizza is still a pie.

A pizza isn't a pie: a pie needs to have a filling entirely covered in pastry. Pizza is open on the top, so not a pie.

Pumpkin Pie disagrees with you.

Pizza = Pie for always. Pies require a crust and do not require a top cover! NEVER! NEVER EVER! NEVER EVER EVER EVER!!!!

Shoo Fly Pie, Pumpkin Pie, Almond Pie, Custard, and many others that I can't think of right now do not have top cover pastry.

Is a false pie.

Are all false pies.

Just like Shepherd's and Cottage pie, which are both not pies, since they have no pastry and only a top cover.

Just because it has a word in the name, doesn't mean it's that thing. Is Spider-Man: The Movie a movie? No, it's a game. Is a custard pie a pie? No, it's a tart.

You're wrong, Pyru.

http://wordnet.princeton.edu/perl/webwn?s=pie

OFTEN with a pastry top. It's not REQUIRED.
