I get ticked off when people proceed to blame video games for things that happen in real life such as murder, grand theft, and other violent acts. Video games don't cause people to do things, people cause people to do things.

http://kotaku.com/5035040/spains-taxi-drivers-want-grand-theft-auto-pulled

Spain's taxi drivers want Grand Theft Auto pulled because they don't want to accept the fact that people in this world are just messed up in the head.

It's because idiots use video games as an excuse to get out of a crime.

There was an instance I think it was posted here where a taxi driver was killed and the kid blamed Grand Theft Auto and all that for the reason of doing it.

Yes, actually, that's what the link I posted was talking about.

I sense thick sarcasm in that post :p

Seriously everyone, people are stupid, thus they blame video games for !@#$% and hope that getting rid of the games keeps it from happening. It doesn't help, they blame something else/more games. We all know this, can we just drop it? Don't know about you, but it IS boring hearing the same thing over and over again.

This is one of my pet peeves here. First off, games by themselves, are inanimate objects. As such, they have no voice, thought or anything of their own. If someone gets inspired by a game to try it in real life, and then blame it on the game, they're complete and total idiots. The game cannot make you do anything. Unless there is a scene in it specifically saying, "Hey you, outside the screen. Do this," you are responsible. The only game I can think of with a scene remotely like that is Final Fantasy V, and it tells you to dance with them. I once heard about a kid whose bladder exploded while he was playing Kingdom Hearts, and he wanted to sue Squaresoft. It was in a letter to PSM. They replied saying that unless Goofy told him to go to the bathroom, he was responsible. I'm pretty sure he had to go but didn't because he was having too much fun with the game. Anyways, the game cannot make you do something. It can not consciously give you an idea, as it is inanimate and thus has no mind or conscious or anything. You can take an idea from it, but there are repercussions. They do realize that killing and carjacking have penalties in the game too, right? They would if they were smart, but they are way too easily influenced. I hate it when people do this, and it gives video games as a whole a bad name.

There are some lyrics in an Eminem song that sum it up.

"They say music can offer moves and talk to you, but can it load up a gun for you and !@#$% it too? But if it does and the next time you were forced to do it, just tell the judge it was my fault and i'll get sued"

People will blame any form of media for their bad behavior. If they commit crimes, they try to blame games, music, movies, just so they can possibly not get in trouble.

That's from Sing For The Moment. Great song, Joe Perry does a nice guitar solo at the end. And it's perfectly true.

Totally irrelevant to the topic. Stay on topic.

Exactly. Any form of media is basically the 'Get of out - free card' in a lot of cases.

I was on topic, by saying that it was true. The line, and his post, was true. I was agreeing with him.

And parents constantly complain about video games saying they're bad influences on the lives of children. Well maybe they should step in and do more things with them. Games couldn't influence anything except on what they should add or not add in the next game!

I've seen books on how games are bad for you, but those books are written by the ignorant.

Yes. If you do something you did in a game, and then blame it on said game, you're a freaking ignoramus! As I already said, the game CANNOT make you do something. You're the one who decides, "Hey that looks cool, I think I'll try that." Your decision, your fault!

I believe that guy who does Ctrl-Alt-Del Online voices my opinion here:
"Just once I'd like to see someone say they killed a person because they saw it on the evening news."

I think only children may get ideas from games, however that doesn't mean you should blame most games with killing anyways, because they shouldn't be playing them in the first place! If an adult is impressioned by a video game, they are either a tool or have a mental illness.

But seriously, if a teenager is dumb enough to murderize, he shouldnt be playing the game in the first place.

It's just that some lunatics out there are so pathetic that they to reduce their punishment with saying that they where influenced by a game. Or assholes like Jack Thompson who obviously hates violent games, tries to get those games removed from shelfs.

That just makes the game companies look bad. They aren't trying to manipulate anyone. They're trying to make money and violent games is how some of them do it. Thinking that causes other things is, well, ignorant.
