When I hear the word "Respect" I mentally substitute it with Fear and/or Jealousy.

Fear because that's what makes you do what they ask of you and listen to what they say.
Jealousy because you 'admire' them, they have a trait you don't have but wish you did.

When I say this to people, they claim I'm wrong. Then when I ask them to define respect, they can't.
Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe they is something wrong with me preventing me from understand this. Maybe my Emotional Intelligence is so low I can barely be called human. Maybe I'm just an idiot. I don't know.

What do you lot think?

Well to be honest I see it as there are different kinds of respect. In one way there is the way you described, respect being fear and jealousy.

But in another way, respect could simply just be accepting somebody. Accepting who they are and not questioning it. For example the way you respect your friends and family.

That's just it, I love, care for and all that my family. But a word I'd never used to describe them is respect.

It's like when people say "I respect your opinion". To me, that's just a nicer way of saying "I think you're opinion is complete !@#$%, but I can't be arsed to argue why you are a total moron."

But personally I'd say that you might not use the word respect to describe how you feel about them, but if you think about it you actually do but you kinda do it subconsciously.

It's like when you go to another person's house and you respect their property (well, at least I hope you do :P)

that's a pretty cynical definition you have, I could just as easily go with "faith" "honour" "trust" etc

I agree. But I'd say those words would come with quite a strong sense of respect.

I tend to break down more abstract concepts into lesser things in order to understand them, when other people are quite happy to leave be. Love, for example, I break down to addiction.

I think that's the best definition of respect, actually. Whether or not you like or dislike the thing you're showing respect to, the point is that you don't tear it apart. It could be a person, thing, or idea; to respect it means to treat it as if you are not better than it.

So respect is basically just being lazy? If I disagree with a person I either tell them, or can't be bothered to but wish I did.

When I say I respect someones opinion, I mean it consider it Valid even though it differs from mine, and usually that I hold the person in question in high esteem.

Exactly, not being a jackass. Being afraid of or not bothered to deal with the fallout of stating your mind.

I just see respect as a lower form of acknowledgement.

It's hard for me to associate appreciation with respect, but acknowledgement is a different story.

Simply put, I think respect is acknowledgement minus appreciation.

I see respect as appreciation. For example I respect a load of guitarists, but I don't fear nor envy them.

See, you're all disagreeing on what respect is. It's an abstract word without a real meaning. This is why i can't understand it <_<

Look up any word (adjectives, mostly) in the dictionary and people will have different opinions on it.

I think of respect (in the way that you are describing it) as finding that, whether or not you agree or disagree with it, you think that it has purpose and isn't complete garbage.

Exactly, not being a jackass. Being afraid of or not bothered to deal with the fallout of stating your mind.
I don't think you understand what being nice is. Perhaps you should read up on how to be a human? >_>

Reverence is probably the most perfect synonym.
Agreed.

Maybe I should, but I still hold to the idea you can separate humanity into two groups:
Those that are arrogant and too arrogant to admit it,
Those that are arrogant but not too arrogant to admit it.
