I've had a cool RPG concept running through my head these last few weeks and I've finally come up with the basis of my project. My Untitled game will follow the story of four people from a zelda-like kingdom that gets corrupted by evil. After hundreds of years of war, time starts moving forward, technology ages fast, too. Problem is, there are four people in the town that haven't aged since the wars fought.

I have sprited a concept of one of the characters:

1. He starts as a merchant in the castle town in the midevil times.
2. Becomes a police man in the modern-like times.
3. Finally enlists in the US military sometime in the year 2356

I'm thinking about having 3d backgrounds and 2d sprites. With a multiplayer mode that lets you play as the military men with modes like, Slayer, Team Deathmatch, and Capture The Flag.

I'm also on edge about whether to make the dialogue "context-sensetive" where what people say depends on how you play and respond. Please vote at the top.

A nice idea if it works. But don't tackle the context sensitive dialogue, unless you're planning on making a really short RPG. Even professional story writers fail in this more often than not. To make a context sensitive story based on your actions, creates a very big web of dialogue. It's easy to lose any coherency between dialogue. If you still are determined to make a story that changes through your acts, make it branching. Choices along the way determine which branch to follow.

Also how are you planning on the time differences. Is the land already in a futuristic setting or will it jump from one to the other era during the story? I like the concept, but I have my worries.

You basically jump from era to era. I guess you guys are right about the context-sensetive dialogue too.
