I listen to pretty much everything and anything but my preference goes to Metal music (I don't like using sub-genres). Some of my favorite bands include Wintersun/Ensiferum/Sonata Arctica ('til Reckoning Night) and Children of Bodom. My personal fave is Symphony X, Michael Romeo is a pure musical genius. I also enjoy things like Iron Maiden, Praying Mantis,Hammer.... and well the BIG4 stuff too! And Ozzy

I think you should do what you want. If you really want to continue this project then go for it, even if you don't finish it. If you're bored of it, then go for something original.
