Title: [Demo 2.1] Relics of Nature's Fury
Post by: Mirby on February 14, 2008, 07:30:14 pm
Title: Relics of Nature's Fury
Story Synopsis: 1,000 years ago, a great battle was fought between nine great heroes and Flynn, the embodiment of darkness. After a long battle, Flynn was defeated... or was he? In the present day world of Thraetenalp, a young man wanders the continent of Noramer. When he fights some bandits near the town of Growlston, he reports it to the mayor. This kicks off a massive journey in which the young man will find out his relation to the nine great heroes, and how Flynn was merely slumbering for the past millennium. New friends and new powers wait in Relics of Nature's Fury.

Yes, I'm going backwards on demo count, it appears. Oh well.

[spoiler=ORIGINAL POST OF ANTIQUITY]This is an idea I've had for about a year, but lacked RPG Maker. Still don't have it, but any help with sprites and sounds would be greatly appreciated. THIS IS NOT A ZELDA GAME! My basic idea is a classic-style RPG. Random battles, but only 1 party member. Spell names are unique, but follow the FF-Style spell-naming system (e.g. Frigi, Frigira, Frigiga). Every once in a while, you may perform the ultimate, "Magna" version of the spell, such as Magnafrigiga. The character (still unnamed) will learn special attacks throughout the course of the game, called "Rush" attacks for the time being. Attacks may include Inferno Rush, Avalanche Rush, Final Rush, Ultimate Rush, etc. Also throughout the game, the character will gain the power of 8 elements channeled into his blade. The elements are Fire, Ice, Lightning, Air, Water, Light, Dark, and Time. I've been playing around with ideas such as him dual-wielding blades, each with four elements when fully powered-up. I'll give spell names later, with the FF spell they are derived from. Let me know what you guys, and girls, think! I look forward to your feedback!

[edit 2/14/08 5:10 PM PST] UPDATE! Legacyoftheoracles is allowing me to use his free game idea 1: Rainbow Wardrobe for my game. He will, of course, be credited. In other news, I thought I'd say that I will only use MIDI's from VGMusic in my game for the background music. Unsure what actual songs though.

[edit 2/17/08 12:46 PM PST] UPDATE! My mistake, I had 9 elements planned. Earth, Wind, Water, Fire, Ice, Thunder, Holy, Shadow, and Time. Some elements can be combined for special attacks. Earth/Fire performs the Kiln Attack, in which the enemy is covered in clay, then superheated with fire until encased in ceramics, which then breaks. May cause petrification. Higher chance of gradual petrification. Most commonly just damages. Thunder/Water performs Sizzler, which drenches enemies then zaps them with lightning to do extreme damage. May cause paralysis. In the same way, one element may cancel out another when combined. Water cancels out Ice, Holy cancels out Shadow, and Fire cancels out Ice. Now for the spell names.

Still thinking of what to call the summons, and what they could be. If you have any ideas, let me know. Also, the final element, Time, will be in character's blade since the start, but will be split between the two (yes, two swords) and character will only learn to use it once he learns to press the half-clock face on each blade next to each other to make one, complete clock face. Thereby character learns how to use Time-related Rush attacks. So once character learns how to use a new element, he will learn the Rush attack related to it. In this case, I'm thinking Chronos Rush. Well? Feedback, anyone?

[edit 2/19/08 12:53 PM PST] forgot a White Magic spell.

arcana/arcanara/arcanaga (ultima)

[edit 2/19/08 1:53 PM PST] here's a mock-up of the first Rush attack, entitled Impact Rush. The circle represents the enemy's area.

will this constitute this game as a WIP? if so, please move this topics, mods. AND PLEASE GIVE ME SOME FEEDBACK! I WANT TO KNOW WHAT PEOPLE THINK ABOUT THIS GAME!

[edit 8/03/08 2:18 PM PDT] A while since my last update. DEMO 3 as I call it. Ironically, there may not be a Demo 4 (or at least one that retains the dungeons of the previous 3).

RPG Maker is not all I thought it would be, so no Rush atttacks and no summons. But everything else is going smoothly. In fact, I'm uploading Demo 1 as I'm typing this. so this is now officially a WIP.

[edit] Demo 1 is here. Blades of Nature's Fury DEMO 1 (http://www.hotlinkfiles.com/files/1014293_i9ssw/BoNFd1.zip)

[edit 2/22/08 11:42 PST] UPDATE! As you can see from the new topic name, I have changed the title to Relics of Nature's Fury. The reason for this? I have decided to use total characters, each commanding power of an element. They are as follows:

???? (Original) - Time
Knuckles (Sonic) - Fire
Samus Aran (Metroid) - Ice
Kain Highwind (Final Fantasy IV) - Wind
Michelangelo (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) - Earth
MegaMan.EXE (Mega Man Battle Network) - Shadow
Luigi (Mario) - Thunder
Blastoise (Pokemon) - Water
Bomberman (Bomberman) - Light

If I can get a good Meta-Knight sprite sheet, he may become the Light character.

Bludleef, that is sick. To be honest, I'm surprised someone helped me, although I'm not too sure about the angel. Or the eye. Everything else looks awesome. But, as I can't think of anything to replace said things, this will be my new screen. Also, someone in my english class is working on a design for my main char. When done, I will upload it and hope someone will sprite it for me. But, again, that design fits my plan about 99%. And the new title too! Sweet!

Thanks I just kind of threw it together with the given concept. As for the Angel it was all I could really think of for Holy, and the eye is the eye of Horace from Egyptian mythology as a symbol of power and the darkness behind it represents the darkness. I would have done a simple demon or something, but that might have seemed more Christian than magical.  XD Anyways I am glad you like it if any changes are needed it is a Photoshop document and can easily be edited just let me know.
Title: Re: [Demo] Relics of Nature's Fury
Post by: Mirby on March 16, 2008, 10:39:27 pm
Yeah. I'm thinking about stained glass or a halo for Holy, and maybe something evil or bad (cannibalism, bloody knife, etc.) something on the other side of the spectrum for Shadow. But that should work. And the thing that bugs me about the angel is that I think it looks like Britney Spears. That's it. But if you could do something that is an example of holy (a good deed, radiant light) and an example of shadow (not the hedgehog, but dark, maybe the Grim Reaper) it should work. And the pic works fine, size-wise, for my game.

...I don't get this game. I'm sorry, but it seems a tad unoriginal. And by a tad, I mean...very. Every spell are just spells from Final Fantasy with different names!

But I suppose good luck on this, hopefully you can make an original story.

No hard feelings  I was just trying to help so aslong as he gets the help I'm happy  XD (Not to mention I made mine thinking it would need to be edited, and it just was to see if I had the basic idea right. It took me maybe five to ten minutes at most and most that time was finding images,  ;) but he can use whichever he likes.)

You do realize that once I saw Bludleef's, I wasn't all like, "That is the final title screen! w00t!" I'm still accepting new title screens, ya know. Heck, I have two people working on designs for my main character. And, xirphirx of the Pivot animation lovers, I recognized some of the elements, but could you please tell what they all are? UPDATE! Released the latest demo, in what could possibly be the final version of it in the current state.

Ahem. THOUGHTS?
My thoughts:
1) I think you should have some !@#$% patience and not be a !@#$% about nobody replying.
2) Looks pretty generic to me. You should come up with something to bring it above the average RPG Maker quality (read: lack thereof).

I'm working on it, and I posted something new, so no need to get rude as hell. And I just uploaded the demo today; I haven't worked on it in a while. I'm working on a story, characters, levels, etc. It'll be completely redone. I wasn't being a !@#$% about nobody replying either; maybe you should stop assuming that you know what I do!

Perhaps you should stop being a snooty !@#$% and posting things such as "Ahem. THOUGHTS?" because you can't wait for people to reply with thoughts on something.

It's a habit of mine. I don't need you frickin' permission on things, so stop being such an !@#$% and criticizing things IRRELEVANT to what I am asking for feedback on. I want feedback on my game, not my posting habits!
Also, that post is nearly 2 months old, and from your reply, it looks like you ignored that fact! That was about when I paused work on it, and I was impatient then. I'm not anymore, so how about this topic goes back to me posting info and replying to feedback and others posting feedback and not dissecting my posts!

Sorry if that offended anyone, but the fact that something I said two months ago was responded to as if I had just said it pissed me off. I do not apologize to MiN because harshness sometimes needs to be met with harshness. I feel I did that. Also, if anyone has any ideas for characters or locations, PM me.

Knock it off MiN, don't bait people please.

And MetaKirby, don't retailiate, there is a reason why there is 'report to moderator' link on each post.

Sorry bout that, I was too blinded by anger to even see that button. I'm better now; I'm getting feedback on it from someone at RPM. This is what he had to say:
Quote from: VirusChris
I've tried out the game a bit, just a few things I noticed that needs to be fix.

The Main Character doesn't start out with a weapon, making him useless in battler (I found out equipment in a cave, but no weapon).

I'm interest in why Knuckles is in the game, but it's cool and I love the battler you choose for him. Any other Sonic characters in here? Also when he joins your party he re-appears in the same map but in the black pit standing there. Need to fix that.

In the beginning when you choose to listen to the story, when you go down the stairs to listen to a part of the story and move back up you can re-listen to the story part again. Don't know if that's suppose to happen.

Love the Menu Screen! It's awesome, nice touch with the VX graphics (one thing I like about VX is that the Icons are much better). And the Victory Screen after winning a battle was awesome! Can you send me a copy of that Victory Screen script?

Also try to add more detail in the shove, make it more alive and more nature in it. Trust me, Pro RMXP users will complain about the lack of details in maps. Also where am I suppose to go on the Beach? Also fix the graphic on the hill with the stone wall on top of the water.

Regardless the Title Screen and everything else is great! Keep it up! Also have you tried out my game, The Legendary Hero: JR, yet?
So hey. That's good!

Okay, so far there are a few things wrong with it:
1.You can go back up the staircase to hear the story again. This doesn't make any sense and needs to be fixed.
2.The desert is big and empty. There seems to be very few things to do.
3.I'm assuming you get weapons some where, but I couldn't find any weapons anywhere.
4.Knuckles? That doesn't even make sense.
5.A lot of the stuff doesn't match graphics. Knuckles doesn't look like the other guy, and neither does the demon.
6.After talking to knuckles, and getting him in the party, he suddenly appeared farther upwards:

I know this was probably a simple demo, but a little more effort should be put in next time. This looks like it could be a cool game.

No, still Relics of Nature's Fury. Because it sounds so much cooler. I also have buttons on the title screen now. Can't get the splash screens to work though... :(

Good, because in a game that is technically an original story, using someone else's characters is !@#$%.

Looks good so far, and those problems you have can be easily fixed with some of RPG Maker XP's features. I have been using RPG Maker XP for awhile making Legend of Zelda: Sage Knight, and know a few tricks and such. I'll help if need be.  ;)

1.You can go back up the staircase to hear the story again. This doesn't make any sense and needs to be fixed.
This is easily fixed by using the switch feature

5.A lot of the stuff doesn't match graphics. Knuckles doesn't look like the other guy, and neither does the demon.
For this you might want to look at some custom graphics members at phanxgames forums are pretty good with XP graphics

6.After talking to knuckles, and getting him in the party, he suddenly appeared farther upwards:
May I suggest changing his graphic to (none) instead of moving him.

The sprite of knuckles doesn't match the sprite of your RPG character. This is in the same league as LttP graphics do not equal MC graphics. Also, the demon does not fit the style of either characters. It may be just me, but that looks very unprofessional when a game presents me with characters in completely different styles. I'm not saying this is professional caliber to begin with, but it would just help if the sprites looked the same.

I realize it's hard to get knuckles in RPG Maker XP graphics, but at least make the demon look up to par.

I'm working on making my own things. The demon is from DQII (SFC) anyways. I know that stuff doesn't match up, but they're just placeholders right now anyways. I thought of names for all my characters, need to come up with designs now.

DUBLPOST/NECROPOST ALERT!

Not really. I uploaded the story so far over at the RoNF section under WIP Games. Also, here are all the sigils I've made so far.

From left to right, they are Chronos, GaiaPyre, Litte (Full Size), Litte (Icon Size), Littea, Litteb, Littec, Litted, Locke, Sacre, Teira-Rin, Volcan, Femme, Frigid, Gaia, Healing, Lectri, Mascul, Pyre, Shado

Also, I'm restarting work on RoNF, and I've changed icons to the sigils. I also added two new status effects, both good. Aware, which raises accuracy, attack, and defense; and Inclined, which raises accuracy, magic, and magic defense. The names come from being more aware of your surroundings (so you can hit more often and harder as well) and being magically inclined (so you can see that side of reality). If you have better names, please give me them. Also, I have a question. Which sounds better: Sigils, or Sigla?

The screens look good, with the exception of nr. 6, 10 and 13. They look really weird. The sprites of the characters are also awesome. Maybe it's me and I need to see the icons in-game, but they are poor. But then again I don't really know what you want to do with them.

(Do note, that I wasn't in the mood to read the entire topic end just read the first post and the last page.)

Note read, and that's good. Very few of the previous posts apply to the current incarnation of RoNF. In screen 6, The Buruna Pagoda, I designed it to look like the colors spiral up the pagoda. Screens 10 and 13, well I went berserk with the colored tiles. It's very colorful! Follow the yellow road to get weapons! Or maybe I should change that to the bar... Meh.

Still not quite that far, but I've started work on the next town, Sennim, where the party is... drugged? And held captive? After that, it's off to Aftristala, the third continent.

Yes, I know, Necropost, Gravedig, this is both of those. But it's relevant info! Also, Bludleef is helping me out once more. Without as much Britney-Spears-esque angel.

The screen is very empty, so not much C+C to give. I do have to say that the arms on the blond girl are kind of short in respect to the rest of the body.
Title: Re: [Demo] Relics of Nature's Fury
Post by: Mirby on February 27, 2010, 10:08:19 pm
It's the style of the sprites. I just wanted to post a new screenie to prove that I am, in fact, working on this once more. Also, this is a pic of the peculiar town of Sennim, where the party is drugged by the townsfolk (led by the creepy guy there) to be sacrificed to the evil idol of Mecyam, who is a manifestation of Flynn, the big bad guy. I'd say more, but that would give it all away. The reason it's so empty is that Mecyam, alias Flynn, has them all entranced so there's nothing there really. Just a few trees and a few buildings. Just to give the "something's not quite right here..." feeling.
Title: Re: [Demo] Relics of Nature's Fury
Post by: Zaeranos on February 27, 2010, 11:13:08 pm
Actually, the emptiness is not just the lack of people. It is the lack of anything. I see a part of a building and a tree, which fills almost 10% of the screen. The rest is empty grass. Not much more buildings or trees or rocks or statues. Not even roads, flowers, dirt paches or puddles of water, it is just grass. That makes it rather empty.

Yeah and it gives you the feeling that something isn't right.  Correct?  If you read what Mirby said, that is the whole point of it.

While I can understand if that's what's trying to be conveyed, I think the main issue is that there's not enough natural elements in the screen itself. It's not much to do with the amount of people, but rather the lack of natural features to give the area a more "put together" feel. If you leave an area completely empty, it forces the player to become bored far too quickly. If you compare to games like Seiken Densetsu 3, or Suikoden, there aren't many areas that consist of the same tile repeated. There's always some variation to give it depth.

Like Mamy said. The lack of features are a sign of something not right, but not in the sense of the game or story. It is not right in that it is not finished and probably that there is nothing to do.

If you want to create an ambiance of danger and that something isn't right, you need to add signs of that, instead of leaving them out. For example:

- Lot of houses, with broken or boarded up windows, but little to no people. (See Kakariko Village in TP).

- Missing or destroyed houses. Foundations are visible and maybe even remaining pieces of wall. But certainly on those places you will find a large dirt patch, roads and paths.

downloaded the demo trying it out in a second, the only thing ive noticed that really bugged me in the screens is the fact that you use roof tiles for sidewalks and such, it doesnt look right at all.

demo doesnt work on here, need to rtp maybe a download to that on here? not everyone has rmxp

that's the problem, one that I've known about since day 1. But... demo 2 will be uploaded later and most of those problems are fixed (roof tiles for sidewalks [still in one town, but there's a good reason], and such). Also, new battle system, voice clips, and more. Sennim is incomplete right now; I just left it where it was for the time being until I start work on Demo 3. Yes, there will be a Demo 4, and yes, I will actually release it. In the meantime, SCREENIES!

Though I'm not a big fan of RPG Maker or any games I have played that were made with it, this looks pretty good. I have yet to try a demo though, so I can't really say much of anything about it. Maybe I will try this out when I feel like taking a break from working on my own game.

Overall I kind of dislike the artistic direction of the game; probably because it all is very stock-RM, and less original :x The muscle babies look weird, and some tiles are used improperly (those city path tiles for example; they look more like steps than actual walkway masonry). There are also a lot of empty areas where there shouldn't be, which makes the experience much less enjoyable than it actually is (it gives the feeling of being tired, or warn out from playing quicker).

There are a lot of ways to improve what's there, and it's just a matter of taking the time to study other RPGs to see how they utilize their space and tiles. I mentioned this elsewhere; but a couple of good games to look at are Suikoden and Seiken Densetsu 3. Both show how to do a lot with a little.

Take a look at these to help give an idea of how to manage space properly, and hopefully lower the amount of repetitive tile usage-

You often surprise me with exactly how insightful you are into game design...I never realized this fact until I read it.

Okay, first off, I'm not going to really keep this style. If something looks bad, it's because it's mainly placeholder. In the future I plan on changing the art style and stuff. Basically, I'm making the game, and then swapping out the graphics so it does it all at once. Either that, or I'm going to sell this as an IP and use this as an example f how I want it to be done. I'm not sure yet; basically I'm just making this to show that I can do it.

Thanks for the feedback; I'm trying to fix the problems you're mentioning. At least you're not like the guy on the RMVXP forums who mentioned a problem but gave no indication about what the hell he was talking about.

Sooo.... I uploaded a new demo. But only because there were some bugs I found that crash the game, and people need the fonts now included to read the text.
RoNF Demo 2.1 (http://www.mediafire.com/?o3jwtiygwmj)

So if any of you had the game crash, this should fix that.

I didn't see any fonts in there (???), so I went back and re-downloaded the fonts you attached for me back when you made the classic Zelda quote...

Well, of you do, you'll need these.

Anyway, I never got around to playing your game earlier this month because of the computer issues I was having, but now I've got a fresh install of Windows 7. I don't even have any games on here yet (save Cave Story, of course), so yours will be one of the first games to grace my sexy gaming PC this time around. I'll let you know what I think (but I won't play long because I've got my own project to work on).

Everything is included in the RoNF executable. The readme, the fonts, everything should extract.

Also, understandable.

^ LOL! I just realized that. :-[

Btw, I get a missing dll error when I start the game up:

RGSS102E.dll could not be found

Is this possibly because I have Windows 7 64-Bit? ... :-\

GAHHH!!! Then I'm sorry Mirby, but I simply refuse to get RPGXP just to play this. I simply hate the RPG makers. >:(
