Feedback / options to change forum width?
« on: March 04, 2009, 06:03:59 am »
Please? It's really quite annoying when images are bigger than the forum width and it's not really making the best use of my 22" monitor ;).

Contests / Contest #8: TOMC #1 09
« on: February 28, 2009, 11:11:50 am »
based off of Q.K.'s TOMC topic of 07
Thematic Original Music Competition

What is it?
The thematic original music competition is an idea I borrowed from the OCRemix forums (I first heard about it here :P ~Darklight). Basically, contestants get a description of a situation or story that could be found in a video game, movie, book, etc. Contestants then write an original piece of music to fit the story. While some competitions have certain guidelines or rules to follow, being as this is the first TOMC here at ZFGC in 2 years, it'll be more lenient.

Categories
Low-Fi: MIDI, Chiptunes, NES, etc. This is set up for people who do not have access to higher end programs such as FL Studio, Reason, Logic, Cubase, or other more advanced sound libraries. You are free to submit your songs without the sound quality being a factor in the judging.
Hi-Fi: This is set up for people who have access to higher quality sounds, and would like their work judged on things such as production quality, sound quality, etc.
These two categories will be separate from each other so as to be fair to both groups of people.

Themes
While normally in a typical TOMC there is only one theme to pick from, considering we have a smaller amount of composers here, that this is the second TOMC at ZFGC and because there was such a long gap between this one and the last, I will allow for multiple themes to choose from. Both categories are free to pick from these themes. When you write your song, while it's not necessary, feel free to supply the ending or outcome of the story you chose.
1. Mist
You walk on, unable to see anything more than ten feet in front of you. You can hear strange sounds, you can almost taste the dread in the heavy air. Then suddenly, the mist begins to clear...
2. The Forest
Under the canopy, it's beggining to get very dark. The insects are beggining their racket, as the birds are quitening down. But it's not all you can hear...
3. Rush
The landscape rushes by as the wind roars in your ears. You can see for miles, a vast vista under the bright midday sun. Green fields, grey lakes and snow capped mountains. But how are you moving? Are you flying? Running? Driving? or is it all just a dream? And more than that, are you running from something?

Obviously with these themes there are varying degrees to which you can be creative. For example the third is more specific, while the first and second are totally up to you - what's behind the mist, where are you? what can you hear through the insect's racket? Feel free to be creative when writing the music.

Signup
1. sjegtp - Lo-Fi Rush Theme
2. D-Pad - Hi-Fi Mist Theme
3. Q.K. - Hi-Fi Rush Theme
4. Kingknight - Lo-Fi Mist Theme
5. TomPel - Hi-Fi Mist Theme
6.
7.
8.
9.
10.

You will be able to sign up until the 7th of March, at 12:00 AM Midnight ACDT (Australian Central Daylight Time), which is currently UTC/GMT +10:30 hours. When signing up, please let me know which category, and theme you want.

Prize
"If ever a challenger wins over a fellow competitor, he or she will gain the people's ovation and fame forever" ... well, almost. Actually, there isn't a whole lot that can be offered, but if you happen to think of something, post it and I'll consider it.

Voting
Voting will take place in a series of polls. There will be the two categories being judged separately from themselves, for sound quality reasons stated above. If, while not likely, there are enough people, it will be even further divided into categories+themes. However, this is not likely considering we have 2 categories and 3 themes to choose from, and only a limited number of composers. Voting will take place once time for writing the music is up and all pieces are in.

Start Time and Deadline
I would request that you DO NOT start writing your songs until midnight on the 7th and signup is closed. As for a deadline, you will get up to 2 weeks - midnight on the 21st of March - depending on how fast entries come in. If all entries are received early, we will jump straight to polls.

At the time of the competition's official start, I will be posting the locations of some music resources (soundfonts, VST's) that may be of use. Feel free to use any of them, and also feel free to search for your own in the meantime.

Thanks for taking the time to read this, hopefully enough people will sign up and FOLLOW THROUGH with this. Good luck to all competitors.

Entertainment / Since when was bioshock 17+?
« on: February 10, 2009, 07:22:12 am »
Serious WTF Australian rating boards.
Since I'm building this sweet computer and all I decided to look at some games I want to get for it. I go on steam, look up bioshock and come to an age rating page. I put the info in thinking it couldn't be anything higher than 15+ and what do you know, it !@#$% locks me out saying it's all 17+ and !@#$%.
There was no age verefication a couple of weeks ago. And my friend's 360 version clearly has 15+ on the front. Why the !@#$% did they have to go reclassify it?
Anyway, got around having to buy a $80 disc copy by clearing out my IE history and putting my birthdate up one year.
Why does the gaming industry continue to !@#$% us all over? (in many ways, not just this)
Oh, and then when I gained access to the steam page it says 15+. WAY TO GO, valve.

One of his better ones IMO, pretty much sums up how I feel about the tomb raider series.

Audio / Zelda Remixed: WW style
« on: January 20, 2009, 05:23:11 am »
I'm planning on making a little medley of zelda songs, and I'm going to put them all in 9/8 time to give them a wind wakerish feel.
I've made about the first 45 seconds of the main wind waker theme, which will be the base of the song. From there I want to blend it to a LLTP darkworld theme in 9/8, which sounds awesome in my head :D.
Therefore, I bring you the first 45 seconds of my piece :).

Audio / Electronica (find the watermark!)
« on: January 12, 2009, 02:46:34 pm »
So I haven't got a better name for it. Oh well.
http://www.box.net/shared/prhdt2az02
Still WIP, and I've done quite a lot since this last render.

And also, this is the first one of my songs I've watermarked. You could go claim it as yours, but unless you recompressed it about a hundred times I'd still be able to find the watermark :D. And after doing that, why would you claim it as your own?

Points for anyone that finds the watermark.

Discussion / ATTN: Staff
« on: January 04, 2009, 10:00:37 am »
Assuming only staff can see this as of now (doesn't really matter if anyone can though) I decided this is probably the best place to post part of my first FL Studio tutorial. I'd appreciate it if you guys could make sure the fonts are showing correctly (bet they won't) and just give me some general feedback on layout, readability etc.
Word 2007 format, if you ain't got '07 get the compatibility pack for '03.

Audio / The Riddle reorchestrated
« on: January 03, 2009, 03:08:31 pm »
Another one of my couple month old projects finally surfaces :D. This time I took the trance remix of Gigi D'Agostino's "The Riddle" and added many orchestral elements to the piece.
http://www.box.net/shared/ldan4zxtc6
Unfortunately the project file's screwed cause I moved the song and it removed all my slices, so that's the only render I'll get.

Entertainment / Lucky Star :3
« on: December 31, 2008, 07:44:58 am »
Well after this wave of vectors drawn by DJ and Min, I decided to take a look at lucky star. And I'm very surprised, I've watched about 4 episodes and I've got to say, it didn't look like something I'd get in to, but I'm loving it so far <3. It's too funny XD.

Graphics / A very wintery christmas
« on: December 25, 2008, 07:52:15 am »
So I get up this morning and the air is completely still... not too bad weather, although unusually cloudy for a day in summer.
Open the christmas pressies, get an ipod touch and an 8 megapixel digital camera. Nice :).
So I went out and took a few snaps... here's a couple for ya's:

I then saw a bucket with some water in it, and took a picture of my reflection:

After that, everyone started turning up for christmas lunch. At which time it started raining, a very rare occurence for what is meant to be summer here :P:

Then to annoy us yet a little bit more, it set in for the day and soon everything was soaked:

low resolution because of facebook btw.

Other Discussion / Need help naming a site
« on: October 26, 2008, 10:59:49 am »
Right, I need a bit of help naming a website. The ones I've managed to think of are pretty lame, so I'd like you guys to help me out.

It's going to be a site focused around the making of music on computers, as well as music in general, so if it relates to music in some way, bonus points.

The ones I've thought of are:

Composer's Community
Square Saw Sine
Fullnote

As you can see, they're pretty lame :D.

Also, if it was a nice 4 word acronym or something like that, that'd be great.

Pretty nice, I couldn't try it out the other day because it had too many connections, unfortunately.

Gives me something to do while I wait for this dvd to render anyway.
