There's some pretty cool nuggets of information in here.

Quote
Miyamoto: I see. Well, where should I start? I’ve always been into first person shooter (FPS) style games, 3D games in which you can walk around freely and see things from your own point of view.

Iwata: And why do you like those games?

Miyamoto: I think it is more comfortable, more natural. We are creatures of habit. We don’t look at our feet when we’re walking around, and we’re always trying desperately to take in the scenery while we’re living our lives. So, even in these games I want people to be able to get really into the 3D geography, so it feels like you’re really there, since I think it’s a really natural thing to be able to look around while you’re walking. At first when we were developing The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, I even proposed using a first-person perspective.

Iwata: Ocarina of Time from a first-person perspective!?

Miyamoto: I thought that might surprise you! (laughs)

I thought that the FPS system would be the best way of enabling players to take in the vast terrain of the Hyrule Field. Besides, by not having the player’s character on the screen, we can spend more time and machine power on creating enemies and the environments.

Quote
Miyamoto: So we figured that Link was the logical choice. Then we argued that it would’ve been kind of strange for us to give Link a gun, so I proposed a sort of Terminator style story about a time warp from the future, but…

Iwata: Terminator!?

Miyamoto: Yeah, they vetoed that idea immediately (laughs).

I think it's amazing that such good games can come from a man with such horrendous ideas! XD

That would've rocked, if Link's Crossbow Training was more Terminator/gun based.

At least, the game would've been more interesting, and I would have actually bought it.

This makes me question what influence Miyamoto has had on the series. Sounds like all of his ideas were crazy and thrown out  ::)

XD at Terminator OoT.

Although a FPS style Zelda game would be cool. Kind of like games like morrowind and Oblivion, but with Zelda.

This is what I thought.

I think there was a mod for one of the two to play as Link or something.

I dunno about a Morrowind or Oblivion mod, but there is one for Halo. :P

And yeah... Somehow, all the "looking up to" Miyamoto has died within me after I started reading about game designers and Shigesato Itoi... Specially Itoi, the guy's a friggin' genius. Designed three games already (the Mother series), made a comic, written books (I think), was the voice for an animated caricature, and is into Journalism.

If there's anyone that be looked up to, it's him. The guy KNOWS how to live.

Ah, he was mostly honored back in the day for NES and SNES titles, and of course the original Donkey Kong. The last major thing he did was create Pikmin, and then before that, direct Ocarina of Time. Everyone's praising him now because he came up with the idea of the Wii, and all related stuff like Miis and whatever, and that has in turn made him pretty rich :P.

Mostly he's just taking the role of "General Producer" with most games, and he himself said that pretty much means nothing.
