So yeah, recently I've been working as an IT trainee at the school I went to last year. The school's admin has said that I can use Visual C# in my own time to learn how to code in it etc, and now I'm looking for some good resources and libraries to get me started. My goal is to at least by the end of the year be able to program 2D games within C#, but obviously I have to get there first.

I've taken a quick look at some of the libraries avaliable that are good for building games (SDL, slimDX, XNA) but I'm not sure which one I should go with. I also need some tutorials on C# basics before I get started trying to make anything with graphics :P. I'm doing computer science at uni next year so java's probably going to feel like a step backwards if I can get some C# under my belt.

So yeah, any help from you coding people?

If you're just starting out trying to learn C#, I'd go with XNA for a media library. There are plenty of tutorials for getting started, and they can be useful for picking up C# along the way. http://create.msdn.com/en-US/education/tutorial/2dgame/getting_started should be a fair place to start, but I believe it's focusing on development for Windows Phone 7. Still, everything there will apply (with fewer restrictions) to developing with XNA for the XBOX or PC.

If you're interested in doing cross-platform development with C#, then you'll want to look at Mono and either SDL.NET or Mono OpenGL - though you'll want a bit more experience before trying the latter.

There's such a double standard about religion in the modern world. Catholics can gather, wear white robes, and say "In nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritus Sancti" and be considered normal.

But if my friends and I gather, wear black robes, and say  "Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn", we're considered cultists.

Cheers for the suggestions Ken, I'll take a look at starting off with XNA then. Cross platform isn't really a huge priority for me right now - I want to get used to coding in C# for Windows before I try anything else.
