Hey, hope this helps: (this keyboard+desk setup hurts my wrists after long typing sessions ;_;)
CDs: (sold at 650-700MB)CD-R: CD Recordable -Write Once
CD-RW: CD Rewritable -Write Multiple Times
note: in order to write to cd-rws, they must be erased first - unless you have the proper software.note: rewritable cds may cause compatibility issues with older players/drivesTo the Best of my Knowledge CD+R/CD+RW do not exist!

When it comes to DVDs, things get more complicated n__n :
DVDs:The 'minus' and 'plus' formats are quite similar when it comes down to actually using them. The 'plus' format was introduced after the DVD Player, and the 'minus' format. Therefore, there is a bit of an issue with compatibility.
Some old players may not play 'plus' DVDs. Compatibility on 'plus' DVDs is also partly to do with how the player recognizes the disk, versus if it can actually read it or not. Read up on that
here - or don't, whatever >_<.
The 'minus' formats are backed by the "
DVD Forum"
The 'plus' formats are backed by the "
DVD+RW Alliance"
Write-Once:DVD-R: DVD Recordable -Holding ~4.7GB
DVD+R: DVD Recordable -Holding ~4.7GB, and
only .005GiB less than a DVD-R
DVD-R DL: DVD Recordable Dual-Layer -Holding ~8.54GB
DVD+R DL: DVD Recordable Dual-Layer -Holding ~8.54GB
note: dual-layer dvds pose no compatibility threat versus their single-layer counterparts. Many commercial dvds have been dual-layer for years, and that's why many dvds have a slight pause part way through the movie on some players(layer switch).Write Twice Three Four Rewritable:DVD-RW: DVD Rewritable -Holding ~4.7GB
DVD+RW: DVD Rewritable -Holding ~4.7GB
DVD-RW DL: DVD Rewritable Dual-Layer -Holding ~8.5GB (These are very new and near non-existant)
DVD+RW DL: DVD Rewritable Dual-Layer -Holding ~8.5GB (These are very new and near non-existant)
note: DVD+RW has native support for random write access - writing without erasing the whole disk first. Other RWs require workarounds and tools to achieve this.note: rewritable dvds may cause compatibility issues with older players/drives.DVD-RAM: DVD-RAMs are in a different group. They organize data more like a Hard Drive, or Floppy Drive - not in the normal circular pattern like other DVDs/CDs do(but the disks are still round =P). They can be formatted in various ways, to various File Systems, and can be written to just like a Hard Drive. Also, these disks are more reliable than the other RWs with important data. Although, with 12x media still in the future, it won't be terribly fast; and as far as using these disks in regular players - compatibility is the worst of the bunch! DVD-RAMs are easy to use with devices like Computers, Camcorders, some DVD-Recorders, and the like. And for good reason - they are like small, slow, portable, and non-moving storage drives(they do spin, there's just no internal movement). Most modern operating systems natively support these. Many drives however, don't.
Do you know if DELL made a new disc drive that supports all formats listed above?
Many new Drives support multiple formats. The Dual-Layer Rewritable formats are very new, and probably aren't supported yet! Also, the Dual-Layer Rewritable
disks aren't even being sold yet
.
