So I just saw a tv contest to win a copy of Batman Arkham Asylum.......
IN 3D!!!
So, this 3D-glasses-whilst-movie-watching fad seems to have crossed into mainstream gaming when I wasn't looking...erm, why? I mean, in movies cinemas it's neat and when you go with mates you can have so much fun laughing at each other in the glasses, but at home in your bedroom playing video games wearing them just seems...sad really :S

I'm actually doing a new photo series called Your Life in 3D. :P
I can't stand 3D.. especially now that it's coming into gaming.

You can have so much fun laughing at each other holding such silly controllers at the arcade, but at home it just seems...sad really.

As for "erm, why?", The move must seem profitable. Maybe someone made note of the contest/commercial just because of an obnoxious "IN 3D!!!" ..hmmmmm.....
And we all just heard.

I think we are  along ways off from 3D gaming being mandatory, PS3 may be upgrading every single game to 3D but it's all optional. So I'm not to fussed.

Heck the only console that might actually force 3D on the user is the new DS, which would be another !@#$% poor move by nintendo.

As for how I feel over 3D gaming, not too fussed, as long as it stays optional until I get bored of gaming, 3D is something I'd use from time to time just cause really :P

They best had, cos it'd be a terrible move other wise, not only because the 3D technology wont be all that good, but also because not everyone has the ability to interpret 3D animation.

Cite your sources please :\

Doesn't make much sense to make a system based around a feature and make it "optional" via setting. That's up to the developer, not the creator of the system.

I think you are overdramatizing it a bit. When it comes, it comes, there is no stopping it. And if you don't like it, well you can always stop gaming, or just play old games on old consoles.

3D is great when it's done right. It should be natural and not gimmicky, full of !@#$% leaping out at the viewer for no reason. Avatar did 3D right; Clash of the Titans does 3D wrong.

The simple fact is it's going to be gimmicky, it always ends up that way no matter how serious the people involved are about it.

Gimmick means it is something new and innovative. 3D graphics have been here since the 90's, and 3D Stereoscopic also has been to long since its first use. So I wouldn't call it gimmicky any more. For that the technology is too old. I have been playing and programming with stereoscopic graphics about 6 years ago. The only thing is that the technology has become consumer affordable.

And like I said you don't have to buy.

Gimmicks don't have to be new OR innovative :x It just has to be used as a primary feature of the game :\

There were people using the technology that powers the motion controls utilized by the Wii, years before people even speculated that the Wii was gimmicky.

old tech. A new use. A new application. A new Industry. A new Audience. New Marketing. (A new Generation?)

It's all just semantics, yeah, but this is how most people and dictionaries seem to define "gimmick". To reference a sort of .."tacked-on" feature. And it's easy to imagine someone "tacking on" 3D visuals, or ..touch screen controls, to a design that's otherwise just fine. But was it made better? For just me? For you? ...there are a thousand ways to fork this now, from here, and end up loving and/or hating 3d stuff...
