Naw, I hate the side scrolling Metroids...I only enjoyed the Metroid game for the DS.  But, if you ever did Zelda 2 or a Castlevania game *whistles*...

Laig, you don't want to know what I beat it in...I have gotten the Excalibur 2 sword on FF9 before...
That mean's reaching the last dungeon on FF9 in under 12 hours...FF4 is a cake walk especially when you know where the quick level up areas are.  FF6, just get the gengj glove on two people...give one of them the master scroll(whatever it is called...it gives you 4xcut)...Now, that person attacks 8 times.  Another person attacks twice.  Equip another person with Dragoon Boots and Horns and they attack between 2 to 4 times.  Then have One that person just chill and beat the !@#$% out of baddies with magic or heal your other characters....lol

FF7 is another that is easy to do a run through with, along with 8 and X.  FF5 somewhat is but I do it a unique way where every one are ninjas and have learned X-Cut from the Hunter Class, then I just equip two weapons to each person and !@#$% smack the baddies for around 6000+ damage 32times when all four characters have finished attacking...lol

You should have done Mario Brothers 1, god knows a speed run would take like a half hour at most.

mario bros takes like 5 mins, and it's quite easy to get each run exactly the same

Aww man, why can't it be Zero Mission, it's so much easier to get a ROM of. I can't enter because I'm moving and probably will miss the event, if I get setup soon I will.

mamwa, you should probably link to the snes emu that can record gameplay

Well the only one I have personally is Zsnes :P

*points to users* GOOGLE lol

BTW I should also mention; if you're recording in chunks, it is okay to send multiple movie files from your run (like if you need to stop and continue later, etc)

:P Just go to "Movie Opn" in the far right menu on the top, and then record movie

The latest Zsnes lets you export your movie... but anyway dont be afraid to record multiple movie files for the same run; realistically if you want to get it perfect, you're almost going to have to. Just make sure your continued run starts at the same position your last one ends, or else I wont count it :P
Title: Re: Contest #2: Speedrun
Post by: .TakaM on March 25, 2008, 03:55:54 am
yeah, anyone who doesn't know the best emu to use, go here (http://www.mediafire.com/?sharekey=a4cab70da7d24d9e2b564cf77bcf3d143e623a22b733f50d) and download "snes9x-1.51-improvement2-beta6-win32.zip" right at the bottom.

Then while playing super metroid, just map the save and load state keys to your joypad, then go file- Movie Record.
Then after you've recorded your run, open up the rom, then go file- Movie Play, and then record an AVI of it playing back.
Or just upload the SMV, everyone else with the emu and rom can play your SMV, plus they're tiny

:P *see's .TakaM's advert brought along some professionals* lol

Anyway yeah the idea is to do one specifically for this contest within the time frame :P While it obviously wouldn't have the fine tuning and extra attention as a normal TAS speed run, it'd still be pretty nice to see one you do for this contest :P

My run will probably range from the 45 to 55 minute range, depending on what tools I use at my disposal... I'm limited to 3 keys at one time, so a lot of the glitches are off limits for me; I'm pretty much limited to mockball, kagoball, and a few others :P Although I'm not going to be able to sit and count frames for my run either... which kinda sucks, lol
Title: Re: Contest #2: Speedrun

I'll enter!
I tried a speedrun last night at got a time of 1:11, but my zsnes movie file got screwed up.
I was planning on redoing it anyway.

Ok, maybe I'll do a lightweight TAS, only using slowdowns and rerecordds, no frameadvance except in some places. I think I could hit 00:30-00:27 in a day or two of work XD

what's cheating?

TAS isn't cheating, that's just propaganda spread by traditional speedrunners (http://www.zfgc.com/forum/Smileys/takam/tongue.gif)

and go easy Cpadolf, remember, no one here is a speedrunner, let alone tas'er (http://www.zfgc.com/forum/Smileys/takam/tongue.gif)

No its not Ali; I'm going to quote something for you from another site-

Quote
Are tool-assisted speedruns cheated?
Cheating has two meanings:

    * To deceive by trickery.
    * To violate rules deliberately.

Arguably, we do cheat the games. The games have been programmed assuming that the player is a human who has humanly limits. We surpass those limits with tool-assistance.

For example, there are very few humans who can produce a 30 Hz autofire by rapidly bashing the B button, but in tool-assistance, it is trivial to do that. We also abuse many programming errors in the games.

But we do not cheat the audience. The makers of tool-assisted speedruns are very open at how they made the movies. There certainly is no deceiving taking part. It is the audience's responsibility to read and understand how these movies are made.

As for rules, tool-assisted speedruns fall under the rules of tool-assisted speedruns, not under the rules of non-assisted speedruns. The purpose of tool-assisted speedruns is different from regular speedruns and there is no competition between these two different kinds of runs, so the set of rules is not, and does not have to be, the same.

We try to keep the difference from the games themselves minimal. For example, our rules dictate that the movies we make must be of non-modified games. We do not crack and heck the games. Basically, the only thing we do is produce unexpected kind of input to the real games, as if a god were playing the game.

I am not asking for a non TAS speedrun. I'm asking for a speedrun in general, I dont care how its achieved, as long as the game has not been hacked or modified in any way.

I got a run done, here (http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/63159899/Cpadolf-speedrun.smv) is the smv (emulator move file).

I decided against using frame advance and such things so this whole run is played at full speed, though with the help of rerecords of course. It looks pretty bad.

Emulator used: Snes9x-Improvement9.

Endtime 00:29 (00:29:37:26 to be exact) and 26 items collected. Time took to make, ~6-7 hours.

I dunno If I'll have time to convert it to .avi and upload it anywhere... We'll see.

I'm actually quite surprised at the route you took, because initially it looks as if it would take more time to go that way, but you flew through lol I cant wait to see the run you made specifically for the contest ^_^

I'll check your full smv when I get my computer back up and running (HDD issues; I should have it fixed tonight)

don't know why it looks so !@#$% on googlevids this time, or why the sound went out of sync either..

Well good luck, it's not really easy. Like there is 0 pixels and 0 frames of margin of error... I mean even if you do it 100% right there is still only a 50% chance it will work because of randomness...And it is physically impossible without frame advance and practically impossible without a memory watcher. Just thought I'd let you know.

I think I got pretty close to making it though, not bad for plain old slow down

I finished my run.
I don't have enough disk space on my computer or a fast enough internet connection to upload an actual video, so it's just
a Snes9x movie file.
This I pretty much my first speedrun ever so I made some weird choices, and my whole run is in 15 different files x_x.
I realized after I finished that it's a bit annoying to watch since you have to load a new movie file every 5 minutes or so,
it also increases the file size quite a bit >_> So I apologize for that.

Clear time:
00:50

Recorded with Snes9X v1.51, the one Takam linked to in this topic.

Truth is I didn't finish it, here's what I did do:

http://www.sendspace.com/file/ulz2xb

(my route is incredibly stupid in some parts (http://www.zfgc.com/forum/Smileys/takam/grin.gif))

You can see towards the end (the last part is normal gameplay) that I got more and more casual with TASing.
Since I was running out of time my only real option was to just run it regularly, but that felt like I was wasting all my progress up until that point, so I kinda put off doing it.

Don't be mad at mamo, I kept promising I'd finish it etc.

anywho, I will finish my run properly for fun when I get back from America if anyone's interested.
(I'll also upload it in video form)
