Feedback / Re: Registration required?!
« on: August 30, 2008, 11:43:16 pm »
* Note that I am speaking as a member of Windfyre's staff, and in no affiliation with ZFGC or #zfgc.

A mode was set on the channel to prevent non-registered users from joining the 5 major channels on the network, since an active botnet was found on the server. A global message was sent to all users (which Ryan must have missed) that stated the reason for it. The channel was in this mode for approximately a half hour, (until the bots were banned and the threat was past) after which it was removed and things went on as usual.

It isn't very hard to register your nickname, though you were using another user's nickname, and that is technically against the rules. You may register it when it drops, as we discussed in #Services. That was really the right place to go for any help with network issues, as you are likely to get a fast response from the people helping to run the network there.

To reiterate, the channel does NOT require registration to chat except in the case of an emergency. It is wise however, to register your nickname so that other users cannot take it from you and/or impersonate you. Additionally, you cannot recieve permanent status in any channel without it :p

Enjoy your dead forum and confused staff

You removed spam temporarily to gauge the result... found the exact result ANYONE WITH HALF A BRAIN could predict (rage from anyone who ever went there)... then removed it fully anyway?

You people need to make up your minds rather than going in cycle of 6 months with spam (during which forum activity tends to rise a lot, and not just in spam) and 6 months without (during which forum activity slows to a crawl, and content becomes much more spammy since people have no other outlet)

Plus many of us PAID for that privelage... not really but even with the fake currency I can't say that's not ripping people off.

Just 2 cents from a former member... it's funny how the problems never changed, the forum just got less and less populated.

Also, click my sig! (this may be grounds for a ban under new rules)

Enjoy your dying forums, and I'll enjoy the dying chat (bet half of you don't even know it exists)

Just a wee bump to say I could use another tester or two... don't *need* but would like. I wish we still had a forum that I could put this in that showed it was development, rather than putting it in the section for pointless advertising. :(

UPDATE: I *will* allow people to join the testing late if they are interested! Please just get in contact with me personally and I will tell you where to look. For anyone already signed up, I'll be sending out an email to all of you telling you where it's hosted, what to look for, and what bugs I'm already aware of. I'll compose that very shortly, and you should have it by midnight.

You can get in contact with me personally by sending an email to admin@ppages.org, iming me at cppchriscpp on aim, or heading into the chatroom (#ppages on windfyre.net; you can just use the chat applet on the main site if you'd like)

The main site will be updated one week from saturday. There will be an hour or two of downtime, though it will be around 1 in the morning so it should not affect many people. Afterwards I encourage anyone looking for hosting to give ppages a try. (or a second one; a ton has changed since the first release)

Thanks for the interest

~ Chris

You're never gonna let that go are you? :P Yeah I know you're in, you're one of the two :p Pikachu/Roland is the other potential, I'm not sure if I actually asked him tho >_> hence the one or two :p

And awesome infini...

It'd be nice if I could get a person or two who haven't done a thing with webdesign before tho... since they're my target audience :p If you're thinking again because of this statement, don't -- It's not like I have a set limit, and more is better :P

Adverts & Recruitment / PPages Beta Testing is STILL OPEN
« on: June 07, 2008, 09:26:57 am »
Some of you will probably remember a pet project of mine known as Project Pages -- a simple free webhost with a really bad design. Well, it still exists. And a new version is coming. A version people will actually want to use. There are going to be much prettier skins and a lot of new features to boot. It's almost ready for prime time, but I need some serious help testing it. I need to be sure that there are no serious bugs, and the system is very easy to understand for new users.

I am looking for a team of 5 or more people to take a decent chunk of time over the timespan of a week (Starting a week from today -- June 14th) to test out all of the features, and basically do whatever they would do if they intended to actually host a website with the site. It's not an incredibly complex job, but it will help me diffuse some problems with it before I roll it out to the public. The testing will be done in an isolated area away from the main of Project Pages; one that is closed to the public. Anything you post there will be kept there unless you ask me to move it.

Anyone who joins the team and actively tests the site for a decent chunk of time will be offered a free upgrade to a premium account on the site. A premium account currently grants its user 3 major things. The first is no ads. The ads on the site will be replaced with the text of your choosing, (can be blank) and will be labelled with your site's name instead. (Basically a persistant little place to leave messages to your users.) The second is extra pages. The old limit on the number of pages you can host was low, and has gone up already. Premium accounts however can host even more pages. Finally, you will be able to upload more files/images, and bigger files as well.

I am not sure how I intend to price premium accounts, however using them will not be necessary at all. The free hosting option should be more than enough for most people; all features that were there before and then some new ones are coming too. Upgrading to premium will cost very little money too, if people decide they really want the upgraded storage and the such. Do not panic about them; I do not expect them to become very prominent, nor do I expect to make much money at all from them. I simply coded the feature in, and decided I might as well make use of it and give my beta testers some incentive.

If ppages hosting won't cut it for you I can also offer you some storage space and a mysql db if you need it; I have no problem with doing this, just ask me.

« on: May 30, 2008, 01:29:49 am »
Yeah more or less... decided that mine sucked with no votes and needed the storage slots for something else.

I removed it towards the end of the first voting session and didn't even bother to put it back up for the second.

I don't know how in the blue !@#$% I got voted as I high as I did, when honestly I believe mine was one of the worst. LynkW should have beaten me, his effects were a) really effects and b) actually very useful and quite nice.

If anyone really wants it or the source they can contact me somehow, I'd be glad to give it or the sourcecode... It can very easily be improved since I took a lot of the fun out of it by setting it at a solid point and just zooming. (Otherwise it would sometimes get a spot in the middle with one solid color, which is no fun)

Contests / Re: Contest #4: Eye-Candy
« on: May 11, 2008, 07:48:02 am »
Well so far I have one simple thing... I have much bigger plans but I'm not sure I can really complete them. When I get a good chance (With any luck monday) I intend to code something that might impress myself. Now to figure out which of a few ideas to go through with... >_>

EDIT: (mostly note to self) Finished the first screen saver... not complex but a few people might like it. Keeping it under wraps for now but it's in a zip file... and 6kb >_>

EDIT AGAIN: Dependant on how tonight goes that may be all from me. Some things went wrong today that may prevent me from having the time expected to finish this program. Not sure though, we'll see.

Ah what the hell, put me down. I might not finish but I'll at least attempt. After I finish up my finals I'll need some project. I could release mine as a screensaver too ;D I'm thinking on making something that works with whatever's on the screen when it's run, and possibly setting it up as a screen saver.

In other news, holy !@#$% cpp still visits the forums? >___>

Haha... what about the other 150? ;)

If I still had them I'd gladly post them but sadly I don't :(

Feedback / Re: Spam?
« on: April 01, 2008, 02:30:28 am »
You weren't spamming, you were !@#$% ATTACKING! That's not permissable on ZFGC and I wouldn't be surprised if you face some form of action for it. What you did was very wrong, and I hope you can realize that.

Also, Vash isn't responding to my queries and he was the one I bugged to take care of this, so I assume we're about to see a very long post that will explain everything in announcements. (Don't quote me on that)

As for spam, I sure hope it returns, perhaps without those people who acted on here to attack that forum, but knowing how the administration usually deals with this I'd say rather than get rid of the troublemakers, they'll get rid of the feature for all of us.

At any rate, have fun people

I think the answer might have been right there in that response... is the freetype library installed too?

Mmm... might be hard to do from an admin's perspective tho... maybe not, I've never done much with modding smf.

Feedback / Chat link
« on: December 11, 2007, 05:06:31 am »
I only today realized that we do have a chat link and that it is visible on every page. I'd like to request that we change that link to something a) more colorful/noticable, and b) make it more evident that it is a chat link.

To those of us who IRC regularly, #ZFGC is obviously a channel name. To the rest of the world, it means nothing. And even myself I never really equated it to the chatroom. I think it should clearly say that it links to the chatroom somehow, and that might bring us some new users.

Also, it would be nice if a link were added to the homepage as well. I know we don't use it much now but still >_>

Feedback / Re: Seriously: That's just not fair. (ZFGC chat)
« on: November 22, 2007, 11:47:10 pm »
I went to #ZFGC and said this:

(05:16:57 PM) nebetsu: Fun fact: I would have to take 340 200mg pills of Ibuprofin for it to be toxic and 1440 pills for it to be lethal
(05:17:05 PM) nebetsu: WHO SMELLS A YOUTUBE VIDEO?

And I got banned? I made a joke and get banned for it. I didn't even SWEAR. Am I not allowed to mention YouTube? Or is it Ibuprofin? Is it because I spelled "Ibuprofen" wrong? No explanation. Just banned.

EDIT: I think I figured out what rule I broke: "Spoilers are not acceptable, please warn if your post contains them." I told people what would happen if I took 1440 pills of Ibuprofen without giving a spoiler warning in case someone else wanted to try it for themself to see what the end result would be. I'm sorry.

That was me. I had a shitty day and your comment really annoyed me for no apparent reason. It was a 5 minute ban. You then in a show of equal maturity came back, complained, and ran off before anyone could say a word. I'd feel bad were it not for that. I was going to appologize then but you ran off before a word could be gotten in.

Suicide :(
What if I WAS suicidal? And that's what set me off the edge? What if by being banned I would thing "I don't even have #ZFGC anymore! I'm taking 1440 pills of ibuprofen!"

I hope that was a joke. I really do.

I don't know why, exactly, you were banned, but coming on the forums and complaining about it has NEVER helped anybody in the past at ZFGC, and has in fact made it worse, 9/10 times :/

I disagree, coming to the forums to complain about a TRUE unjust ban is fine with me, though I'd appreciate it more if it were directed at me in a pm or email or something, so I actually get to it. I don't visit the forums as often as I used to so I just chanced upon it. This however was not really forum topic-worthy, as he came back into the channel and complained before running off.

Contesting a ban is fine with me if it's on normal grounds.

Correct me if i'm wrong here ken, but didn't you *set* the ban?

None the less, if you're ever confused at why you were banned and its not blatantly clear, feel free to post it here. Its better though to query myself, cppchriscpp or Blackmage.

Way to go finger pointing >_> As I told you last night it was me. I was going to (again) bring it up with neb today but this caught my attention first. The second statement however I agree with, as stated above.

You're back in, the ban was 5 minutes or less in time, case should be closed. If this is not true, please post or contact me personally, though realize that my prescence will be rare over the next few days. Posting here right now might be a better idea unless you see me online.

Discussion / Re: Which Language; C++ or C#?
« on: October 28, 2007, 12:18:12 am »
I'd say go with C# nowadays. Before this year started I'd say C++, but I've been using it in college and it's really a more fun language to program. It's much easier to get into IMO, and it's pretty powerful. It *is* true that it requires the .NET framework.. but that's getting to be very common, many, many recent programs require it so far as windows go.

And to those of you saying it's not cross platform compatible, do some damn research before you say that. Look into the MONO project: http://www.mono-project.com. An extra step or two? Yes. But I bet it's not much more complicated than changing all your code to deal with differences between a windows/linux operating environment, especially with non-console apps.

Overall I'd say C#... it's easy to use with the console in comparison... and now that I'm looking at GUI, MS really does have something impressive built for those of us on the programming end... Especially for windows GUI programs... It's so easy to use a dialog and everything else nowadays... my first day windows programming in 3 hours I managed to get two different fully functional programs working... including a simplistic paint application.

... :D
