I don't bother with "converters" for MIDI so I can't help you there..

What I often do is open the Volume control (double click the volume icon next to your system clock), set the recording channel to MIDI, then open a basic sound recorder (like Goldwave, but even the one that comes with Windows should work), hit record, then play the MIDI.

Wavepad also allows you to record indefinitely.  It has a handy button you press to access the Recording Volume Control, where you can select whatever source it is.  There might not be a MIDI option like Goodnight stated, but there should be some sort of "whatever the speakers would play" option, like Stereo Mix or similar.

That's the point though.  You don't need one.  You simply change the recording settings so that instead of recording from the microphone, it will record from another source, like Stereo Mix or Wave or MIDI or something.

Another way to access the recording volume control is this:  open up Sound Recorder, and then click Edit - Audio Properties - Volume button in the "Sound Recording" section in the middle of the box.  The resulting box that appears should look different than the normal Volume Control, and it will probably have Microphone selected by default.  Change this to something else.

Assuming you're running Windows, click Start - Programs - Accessories - Entertainment - Sound recorder.

The exact path may vary, but it will be somewhere within "Accessories"

Like I said,

Did you check every folder in Accessories?

EDIT:  Alternatively, click Start - Run.  Type "sndrec32.exe" and hit Okay.

iTunes converts MIDIs to mp3s.
In Windows:
-Open iTunes
-Edit->Preferences->Advanced->Importing
-Change "Import Using:" to "MP3 Encoder"
-Then find your MIDI in iTunes, right-click it, and select "Convert selection to MP3" from the context menu
In Mac:
Same steps, but preferences is found under the iTunes drop down menu, not Edit.

Or I suppose you could find something at download.com.

Then perhaps you should consider getting it.  You asked for a free converter, and AnimalCollective gave a good suggestion for one.

Did you try my other suggestion?  With Start - Run?
