[Demo] Legend of Zelda: 3 Paths, 1 Destination
« on: February 16, 2008, 06:21:54 pm »
After playing Twilight Princess I really wanted to create a Zelda game so that's exactly what I did. It's not as good as some of the other games on this site, but I still think it's something. Download includes a text file with basic help. There are 2 dungeons that are completely playable. The first is the "Light Dungeon" and the second is the "Twilight Dungeon". If you decide to play I recommend trying the Twilight Dungeon. It's got a much better design. Most of the graphics in this game are from A Link to the Past. If you could, please suggest things I could improve on.

The areas in this game include part of Ordon and 2 new dungeons. The thing about this game is the ability to take different paths, but still ending up at the same destination. That's why I named it 3 Paths, 1 Destination. It shouldn't be too hard to figure out what to do since most of the game is like a normal Zelda game and I've got a few pages of help on my site.

One more thing. I just created this account so if I'm doing something wrong please tell me.

The rooms are far too big. seriously, unless you add a lot more detail, all that extra space is completely unnecessary. Make the rooms smaller.

Well, for the monitor I used 640 by 480 worked perfectly. I guess it doesn't work on every computer though.

The rooms are far too big. seriously, unless you add a lot more detail, all that extra space is completely unnecessary. Make the rooms smaller.

Well, I've worked with Game Maker for a few years (since I was 12) creating very small games, often giving up on them. Now I'm much more experienced and I can do quite a bit.

A new guy who has a awesome game. He rocks

Thank you very much!

This technical demo didn't really impress me, sure, you've put some efforts into that game, and it was fun to play, but:
- maps are too empty
- collisions need more works
- same for the movements system
- make an option to play in windowed (?) mode

And that's all, I didn't play it until its end, because my PC is too slow. [...]

1. Too empty? Maps are just the rooms. Do you mean I don't have enough treasure chests?
2. Collisions are my weak-point, but what exactly bothered you?
3. Movements are bad? Huh?
4. I was going to, but that caused problems for gameplay.

Did you try lowering the bit depth? That might have made it faster.

I think by maps are too empty, he (she?) means that the rooms are too big, with too little in them. Say you have a room 700x500 px. And have 10 24x24 enemies, a chest, a couple of lanterns, and a few pots. and on each side of the room, you have a door. it would take too long for the character to move to every place. Most 2D zelda games don't have 6x6 units (whatever their using as a base block, i.e. LTTP had 16x16) of empty space, unless of course in a field or intentionally open area. In your screenshot, you have a hell of a lot of blank space.

Your view of 640x480 is too big, go with laigonaz, he knows what view dimensions to use.

Are you referring to the Light Dungeon or the Twilight Dungeon?

Actually I played the twilight dungeon.

And you still thought the rooms were too big? Well, looks like I'm going to have to make sure my next dungeon doesn't have any extra space. Thanks.

actually lttp went a lil faster :P

but I think the problem is that it's missing frames o.o... it looks like its missing 2 frames off of the end of the animation...

Either way, lol it's his first GM project if I'm understanding this correctly, and I think its considerably well done for not having the experience :D

To Venyux:
1. Ok, I'll add more treasure chests in my next dungeon.
2. I'll try designing the rooms better.
3. They were real, but it just appears as they aren't because I used a mask for Link.
4. Blocked on a line!? Please explain this. It sounds kind of serious.
5. Maybe I'll add the option to switch, but they'll be a warning.
6. Ok.

You are correct, I actually did slow things down in this game. Sprites are much faster in A Link to the Past. Oh, it's not my first project. Just the first project I've REALLY tried hard to make and released.
