Title: Gameboys & Pokemon officially "in".
Post by: Hoffy on April 04, 2008, 06:07:07 am
So the most amazing thing happened. One of us brings a Gameboy to school with a copy of Pokemon Blue. Then another guy brings in Red. Then I bring in my copy and Yellow. And now practically every guy in the grade who owned Pokemon in their youth is bringing their pokemanz to school. It's like a training/battling/trading bonanza. It's pretty awesome.

The only rules are:
- If you bring anything newer than a Gameboy Colour, y'suck and,
- If you bring anything newer than Pokemon Yellow, y'suck.

And yeah, that's the Phenomenon of the Day.

Holy !@#$%./me moves to... you live in Australia, right?
I'll bring my copy of Pokemon Yellow and my Game Boy Color, in my pokemon case. It's in this room, and I'm looking at it as I type. I'll pack my bags.

I am assuming that were you said "older" you meant "newer", but that is alright. I lent my Gameboy Color to my friend once and his dog destroyed it and his brother now has my Pokemon Red.  I should have another Gameboy Color somewhere though, but meh.

Whoa, you're right. What stupid English.

Meh, I had three exams today >____>, cut me some slack.

But yeah, it's great fun sitting around doing not much else than giving each other advice on what moves to teach and which Pokemon to grab. It doesn't feel at all geeky, because it's so retro.

:P until you guys realize that your save batteries are going to or have already died, and you cant save your progress anymore lol
I already know my copy of Yellow does that. So I gotta finish it before it happens XD

I remember a 'cool' guy who was on the football team always used to bring his Pokémon to my gym class and all the guys would love it for some unexplainable reason. Of course, the one time I can dazzle people with my Nintendo knowledge, it just so happens nobody cares :(

That happened last year in my school. In fact, I brought in Zelda OoA to play in a study hall once, and some people saw my Gameboy and excitedly rushed over asking "Are you playing pokemon?!!!!!!!!?". When they saw it was "just Zelda" they became disinterested and left. ;P

god damn, I could recite all (at the time) 151 pokemon.... in order!
Not like I recited it every night or something, I used to have a poster with all the pokemon and their corresponding names + numbers.

Back in highschool, I put GBA emus on all the computers in computing class, the favourite roms were the pokemon roms of course, everyone got really into pokemon again, just not really outside of that class.
People would only talk about it sarcastically, but once it was time for that class, everyone turned into a pokemon nerd.

I really should reignite this in my dorm. :D

We've begun playing Age of Empires II here again. We have several huge LANS per week of 6 or more players in a game. It's funny how an RTS from 1999 has still never been surpassed.

I did this with a friend at secondary school.
We were sat in the middle of the school field having a battle (i won) and loadsa chavs came over saying "haha what you playing, pokemon? losers..."
Then the next day loadsa people were playing it with us.

I never played AoE, but god damn Starcraft is awesome. Warcraft II as well.  Maybe I should give it a shot some time.

Anyway, I can't imagine something like this happening with my circle of friends.  Back in 6th grade I was a closet pokemon player in a way.  I didn't hide it, but I didn't ever bring it up either.  None of my friends at the time had any interest in it so I never really had the opportunity to talk about it.  It's the same now really, none of my friends are willing to play anything besides FPSs or sport games.  I couldn't get anyone to even TRY Super Mario Galaxy, which is just sad.

Anyway, at my local mall they used to have card tournaments once and a while that I'd participate in.  I think I won a few times actually, but I'm not sure...  Do any of you remember when Burger King had pokemon toys with their kids' meals and would have a weekly "pokemon night"?  I used to go to that also.

AoE2 will forever beat Starcraft DOWN. But WarCraft 2 is stil the best RTS ever.

I emulate Red on my DS but that's about it.  I still need to finish it actually.

I never owned an actual Pokemon cartridge since I didn't get a Game Boy until the GBA came out and had lost interest in Pokemon by that point.

AoE2 ftw!! Omg I want to be in your dorm... Ours just has this group of Super Smash Bros addicts and if you try to get in their game you get a "!@#$% you go away" >.< But I remember some friends of mine last year when I was in High School brought in their GBC's with Pokemon and reignited the craze among the band room (I was amazed though... someone had a Mew... I still want one *pout*)

You say slow as !@#$% base building, I say extreme preparation for epic, tactical combat. StarCraft is a great game though, no doubt.

Haha! We're all Smash Brothers players here (and Mario Kart!), but we are very friendly. Sometimes we get so into it people from other floors are attracted to the noise, and come to join us.

I also think the originals are better, but the Advance generation is even better than that. I luuuuurve Leaf Green, and Emerald. Too bad I can't play them fully on an emulator, 'cause after you beat the Elite Four there's no way to save your progress. *cries* I wanna go to the Battle Frontier. Visual Boy Advance save states, or screw around with the save types until you find the right one.

I loved these originals... I spent so much time on trying various cracks/cheats. This was back in my non technical days, I constantly hunted for Mew(back when the theories were to talk to guy x 500 times, then go to place A, etc...), I did as many as I could, cause back then games had secrets like that, not these !@#$% ant acheivements, god I hate those... they're worthless. But yeah, I believed that mew was in the game, pokeGods(I sooo wanted that to be real, if i could do a ROM heck, i'd add it in there *shakes fist*)... i had the no clip thing from the game shark, so i'd explore what I could.... good times...

Actually you can get mew in red/blue there is a bug with trainers that are just out of sight. I think it's the gambler (the one sitting by the underground pass near Saffron City) on route 8 that if you press start just as you get in range, you'll go to the menu then fly back to lavender town, (not sure if it needs to be lavender town but thats what I always use) then exit back on to route 8 and as you do the menu will come up, exit it, then you'll battle mew (it's level 7 I believe). you can also fight other pokemon  if you do this on other trainers (again all level 7). Try it, it's purdy neat.

The specialness of Mew is that he was only meant to be given out for Nintendo contests lol... I was a habitual Nintendo contest goer; hooray for Star Fox Championship Weekend! I won like 4 tees and like 81291212 pins XD

I agree, just randomly show up at a school, sit down next to a group of small children, and be like "Sup. You like Pokemon?  You want to go for a ride in my van? I have candy".  >_>

Anyway, I would be playing on my GBC because of this topic, but I gave it away when I bought a GBA, and I would be playing it on my GBA, but I gave it away when I bought a DS.  I don't have a DS anymore because it was stolen, (four of them actually), so that rules out playing Pokemon...  :'(

I always hated that

Me: ): How do I do that
My Parents: I dunno you should probably just go to sleep

That is why I got the light thing for the gameboy color

I think it's the gambler (the one sitting by the underground pass near Saffron City) on route 8 that if you press start just as you get in range, you'll go to the menu then fly back to lavender town, (not sure if it needs to be lavender town but thats what I always use) then exit back on to route 8 and as you do the menu will come up, exit it, then you'll battle mew (it's level 7 I believe). you can also fight other pokemon  if you do this on other trainers (again all level 7). Try it, it's purdy neat.

I saw that... that didn't exist back when I was into pokemon, but hooray for abusing the code.

I knew of the gameshark links, but I was obsessed with 'It has to be in the game' Hell the code was there, they should of just left it the way it was.

Oh and Pyro... that's so friggin awesome, I hope they actually go through with it.

Well, being as it looks like Pyro may be one of them, though I'm not sure, I'm sure he is hoping so too.
But yeah, I've been playing Pokemon Red and Blue since I go them at a used game store recently. It actually feels great to get reacquainted with the original games of the series, and so much easier to catch all the pokemon since they are all possible to find right in the game. =P
Which reminds me of something interesting I did with Pokemon Diamond/Pearl and Datel's Max Media Player, but I won't go into that here.
