I just sort of realized recently that I am in love with most things that have a cult following. For example,
the Mother series (described as having a cult following)
the original Fallout games (described as having a cult following)
Donnie Darko (described as having a cult following)
A Clockwork Orange (film and book) (described as having a cult following)
Akira (film) (described as having a cult following)
Grateful Dead (described as having a cult following)
Phish (described as having a cult following)
Anyone here have any recommendations for video games or movies (or other medias) that have a cult following?
-
:| doesn't this uh... kind of demean the reason they have a cult following to begin with? It kind of makes you look bad when you're asking for things to like that have a cult following :P It's sort of saying "I only like things that only some people like, so tell me what they are so I can like them too" D:
-
It's not that I only like things that only some people like. It's that I've noticed I like those things more than others, and want some suggestions of more of them. Really not an unreasonable thing to ask.

The Room.
-
The Neverhood. Or anything by Doug Tennapel for that mater...
-
I have noticed a lot of things I like are described as having a "cult following" but I admit I try and keep an eye on the indie scene and stumble across old games etc. quite a bit ^^
For example, Princess Maker 2 is an old DOS game I stumbled across. It's by Gainax (they made Neon Genesis Evangelion) and it shows, but that makes it even more awesome ^^

Jet Force Gemini for the N64
Trigun (maybe?)
Not sure about "cult" following, but I only know two other people (IRL) that have even heard of the Shin Megami Tensei: Persona series. That's all I can think of right now.
-
Thanks guys, I'll check some of these out.

What constitutes as a cult following? And when is something an cult object?

Something gains a "cult following" when it doesn't generally perform well in main stream media, but holds a reputation as being something that has gained an underground audience. The idea is that the people who like said cult hit "found it first" and everyone else are posers >;o
I keeed about the last part
-
Mammy nails it.
Also, I must object to your signature. Donnie Darko can go to Persia if he wants to. He just has to watch out for airplane engines. (This is totally on topic, because of the Donnie Darko reference :D)
-
Oh also, Rocky Horror is a given.
-
Man, Donnie Darko is so overrated. At least it's still good, unlike other overrated movies. See: The Boondock Saints.

Man, Donnie Darko is so overrated.
Doesn't the fact that it has a cult following and not a normal following imply that it's underrated? :P
Also the movie was stupid as !@#$%.
Boondock Saints was alright.
-
It could just means there are a group of people who took enough hits to the head and like it? :S
Meh, never actually watched Danny Darko so can't comment on the film itself (well, I watched it once but I was *blind drunk* at the time so couldn't follow it at all XD)
-
I've never seen Donnie Darko either (or Danny Darko, for that matter), but I know it's overrated by 16 year olds who say it's the best movie ever made. I'm sure it's not.
Some good "cult" movies: Reservoir Dogs, The Big Lebowski
-
Dog Soldiers is also an interesting movie =P It's essentially "Soldiers are training in a forest...AND THEN SOME WEREWOLVES ATTACK!!!"
-
All the movies shown on Mystery Science Theater... they're so much better without the commentary.

I guess the Disgaea series has a bit of a cult following. Now that I think about it though most of Nippon Ichi's games are like that.
Makai Kingdom is another good one by Nippon Ichi, that's what my avatar is from too. :)

Favorite quote from him: "Also known as Alejandro, Asshat, or Alex." :D Best quote ever in any game ever in the history of things.

That includes a lot . Especially if there is still a discussion about whether is good or bad.
Some good "cult" movies: Reservoir Dogs
You are kidding me right? I would not call that a good movie.

I think Fight Club's mystique comes from 1) people beating the !@#$% out of each other and 2) spliced in images of brad pitt in random frames :p
