I guess this is more or less to stir discussion around the hearing and not have a 'debate' about it, but it's the most logical and appropriate discussion place for this, since it will most likely evolve into a debate.

Is anyone else listening to this live at the moment? I'm in the mood to get some thoughts on it.

Other Discussion / Rickrolling in Am. Samoa
« on: June 14, 2008, 06:50:25 am »
So, my local radio station (one of them I should say) has one of the most famous names ever, if you know anything of radio station history,  93KHJ (KKHJ-FM). It was one of the biggest stations in LA, and strangely enough the call numbers are now located in American Samoa of all places.

http://khjradio.com/

We have quite a strange bunch running the morning show. I love them dearly and they never cease to amuse me at any point in time. Recently they've been playing Rick Astlely *A LOT*. I swear, every time I turn on the radio, they're playing it. I know they play WoW quite a bit (The DJ's) or used to, so in my eyes that means they probably know a little bit about the internet scene, you know to an extent? Maybe, hopefully. Anyway, I sent them an email today after my sudden urge to *figure out* whether or not they were actually Subtly rick rolling American Samoa.

Quote
Hey Guys,

You indirectly know me I think through my mother Pam, over at Clothes Shack. Anyway.. I imagine you're both fairly into the internet scene, so I have to question the motives behind the consistent playing of Rick Astley's song "Never Gonna Give You Up". I pretty much laugh out loud everytime I hear it being played.. it seems like the one or two times I manage to catch KHJ sometime during the week day, that song happens to be on.

Is.. KHJ subtly rickrolling American Samoa? Or has he just suddenly become popular again!

If I'm just a fool and you guys know nothing of the 'rickroll'. May we cite Wikipedia on this one: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rickrolling

Thanks guys and you never cease to amuse me when I do tune into the morning show!

Joey replied first, he's the General Manager of KHJ. After my second reply to them, it dawned on me he was probably being sarcastic in his message.. I suddenly took note of his email signature (it's what gave it away for me.. I'll bold it for you.)

Hi Andrew,

That's some funny stuff.

We play Rick Astley a lot because I think he's a personal rolemodel. He's one of the most inspirational people I know.

My reply to him quickly followed:

Hey Joey,

Haha, I had to ask.. my dad and I have been debating it for some time..we figured perhaps it was intentional (in relation to the concept of rickrolling). I know you guys (at least from what I remember) seem to be very internet related guys... I remember listening to World of Warcraft Discussions during one summer in the mornings.

Well, my question has been answered! Thanks for answering it, role models are important.

~ Andrew

PS: Play some grunge more often! :)

Then John Replies.. he's a DJ there and in charge of sales, I believe:

Other Discussion / CBS buying cnet..?
« on: May 15, 2008, 05:19:01 pm »
For 1.8 billion dollars in *cash*. CBS is going to buy cnet..

Is this the start of the take down of the IPTV networks? If so.. why didn't they shoot for Revision3, where most of cnet's IPTV staff went?

Perhaps it has nothing to do with IPTV... but if it does... why! D:

Updates / Nickname Changes
« on: April 27, 2008, 09:25:26 pm »
Apparently something went down yesterday regarding nickname changes and people changing their nicknames.

I'm not 100% sure what really happened, though Mammy was attempting to explain it to me.

I took a moment to talk with Helios, we're going to allow free nickname changes for the next 24 hours or so. You should take this time period to change your name to what it you want it to be. Please do not abuse this freedom! We're trying to be nice here.

I'm not entirely sure what Mammy did in regards to the Shop and the Shop item. I'll have to speak with him at a later date about that.

However the Shop system will be scrapped during the SMF 2.0 upgrade, as it would take a lot of effort to rebuild an addon that serves no real purpose for ZFGC. All SMF addon's will have to be rebuilt for the most part anyway, so if we do find a purpose for the shop in one way or another, aspects of it will probably be added back in.

Have fun and sorry about the lack of consistency and continuity regarding the subject of Nickname Changes.

I had to reset the theme's earlier. It seems as if only the "Core" theme and the Royal themes work.

Working on figuring out why.

I'll update as soon as I have something.

Mamoruanime and I have decided it would be best if we stepped aside and handed over general management to Infintus (Helios) along with Windy. We'll both still be around the community and the management team, however we want to take the time to focus on different projects.

I will continue to manage the domain and hosting, along with provide funding for contests (as planned) and continue my work in the ways of public relations. Since I have been working I've had very little time/effort to put into ZFGC and it has really strained my ability to do things and perform the best I can.

There really isn't much to say other than that, we'll still be here and around, but I think its time we get some new fresh look at things, Helios and windy has some nice ideas and plans for the future and I think would do a better job at implementing those plans than I would.

Sorry for being a DICK earlier swiftu <3

Updates / The Tribe has Spoken
« on: March 23, 2008, 05:17:49 am »
The last few weeks have been kind of chaotic for ZFGC, it looks as if my attempts at trying to persuade ZFGC towards change has turned into quiet a mess. I apologize to the users, staff and anyone else whom I perhaps have let down. I want to thank everyone who was open and honest about things as well when it comes to what the issues really are around here. You guys know who you are and I specifically sent the majority of you messages or replies back to your posts. Thank you for that it is 100% appreciated.

I also want to specifically thank BuffaloBurgers for pointing out the fact Administrators should be less ho-hum about things. I can be blunt sometimes, which gets me into a lot of trouble, but thank you for standing your ground. Administrative discuss, as I consistently lobbied in the past, should be discussed with staff only.

Helios and I have spent some time talking about ZFGC’s options. I know a lot of you guys favor no change at all, but as Administrator’s it is our responsibility to evolve the website. We’re very aware that while our ideas for advancing development recently were good at first, the system itself does not function very well. We’ve both got separate ideas but we’re working towards compromising how we’d like to see things run. The Wiki seems to be moving forward last I checked, along with several ideas I introduced in a plan a few days back to the moderation staff. We’re also working on getting ZFGC switched over to SMF 2.0, which I think will definitely advance our abilities.
ors one thing I favor another, I think we’ve finally come to a compromise regarding that and its looking a head. He’s got some community involvement ideas going along, the Wiki idea seems to be progressing and hopefully some of the ideas I developed recently will go into place. We’re working on getting ZFGC switched over to SMF 2.0 (the current public beta that was recently released).

I hope things will move forward with everyone. Right now I think we should all stop our bickering and go back to the way things were before. I think Mammy and the crew are going to be working up some nifty events in the coming weeks and I hope we can settle our differences and be a family again (cheesy!).

Network Issues

To all customers experiencing network issues:

Yesterday we turned-up a new GiG-E line to cater to our rapidly growing business and to provide the best service possible to our clients.

Instead of being a burstable GiG-E like we ordered, we were provided a rate-limited port which in turn bottle-necked our traffic and provided many customers with incredibly slow speeds. We have been troubleshooting this issue for the last few hours and have made the decision to disable the port and to resume service with our original configuration as we contact Time Warner and troubleshoot this issue.

Your servers and websites should be responding as normal, and I apologize for the inconvenience this has caused some of you.

Kind regards,

Jared

Hopefully they'll have the issues resolved soon. According to them its 'fixed', but the website still seems sluggish to me, I think it may be my work internet speeds.

Updates / Resignation
« on: January 05, 2008, 12:02:37 am »
I'm sorry to say I'll be unable to continue the operation of this forum. I have found that ZFGC is taking up far too much time, with very little productivity out of it. I need something that I can physically see results with and right now I'm just not feeling it with ZFGC. Whether it by my style of leadership or the current state of ZFGC itself, I really don't know. Regardless I can't keep up with the demand ZFGC is requiring when I get no enjoyment out of managing it at all.

I realized this today while chatting with a few former members about the current state of ZFGC. The thought finally clicked when I came to the realization of what I want to see ZFGC become. My vision for the forum consisted of a (Zelda) Fan Game website, which seems fairly achievable from a distance. Looking closer I've come to realize without ZFGC's original purpose (OoT2D) there's nothing that pushes ZFGC towards the fan gaming element. I want to note I do recognize the successes of AoDC, King Mob and others with creating amazing games over the past few years, I just feel there should be more than a handful of games to account for. I've also come to realize that attempting to push ZFGC towards the (Zelda) Fan Game concept is nearly impossible, because its very similar to what was done to the user base during Project-X. We forced users to focus on one thing, while they were attempting to focus on another, which ultimately lead to the downfall of the project over all.

Now, I'm not saying that ZFGC can never achieve these results, but I am saying I am not the person to take ZFGC there.

I will be stepping down from the title of "General Manager" of ZFGC. Due to an agreement with Justin (Metallica) I will not be giving up the domain name, if I did the domain name would ultimately return to his hands if it goes anywhere at all.

With that said I plan on discussing my options as soon as possible with Mammy regarding my replacement.

You're free to comment on this post if you feel the need to do so. I've opened announcements to posting.

Thanks to everyone who have helped me along the way and specifically to those of you who put up a fight with me, and supported me at my side. You've all made me grow in different ways.

Thanks ZFGC! :)

There could be a very nice big discussion on where this is going to go...

Vivendi owns Blizzard, blizzard and Activision will be merged together to form 'Activision Blizzard'.

Very interesting

Updates / Reply to Future of ZFGC
« on: December 02, 2007, 11:10:15 pm »
This is my long over due reply to the topics, polls and general discussion on the Future of ZFGC.

I apologize for the lack reply to this subject, but I have been spending a lot of time analyzing what can be done with ZFGC over the next few months.

The initial proposal that we came out with was taking ZFGC and integrating it into a general development website. However, since we really can’t even successfully implement something simple, such as a Wiki or a portal, without it taking a long time, I fear development on this scale would be a very slow and painful process for us. I think what would be best is the creation of an affiliated website for general game development resources, which would be closely affiliated with ZFGC. This idea is still very far off, but discussion of the subject is still very strong.

I recently developed a phasing plan for ZFGC’s progress over the next few months. I was going to paste it here, however I feel there’s a lot of revisions that need to be made for it to adapt it to the current view points. Below you’ll find an over view of what we hope to get done over the next few months.

Feedback / Future of ZFGC.
« on: November 10, 2007, 10:51:51 am »
Alright! I wanted to do a townhall style meeting on Windfyre, however that was ultimately poopooed by other people. So we'll start here with a basic discussion.

The purpose of this thread, like so many other threads in the past, is for users to voice the concerns, ideas and suggestions for ZFGC, and if they have an idea of how they would fix or implement the said concept they would take the time to discuss that, so it could be discussed and deliberated by other users within the community. The goal of this exercise is to allow the staff to see how the users feel about various subjects, ideas, suggestions, problems within the forum and how we can go about fixing / resolving / implementing the said discussion.
