Other Discussion / Something was always missing from my life.
« on: February 24, 2008, 04:49:26 am »
I needed something. I could feel it. Something I felt I needed everytime I looked... only to see nothing. Something to complete my quest for knowledge.

I needed... a clock. To tell the time.

Elfen Lied fan for over one year yay.

Coding / Encapsulation vs Inheritance
« on: February 23, 2008, 11:10:05 am »
Could somebody please explain the difference? I've read alot on it and still do not fully understand.

Java EG (excuse any mistakes, I'm tired):

somewhere in main method, I'd have

Code: [Select]
Animal dog = new Animal(4,"Bob");
which creates object from:

Code: [Select]
static class Animal{

byte legs = 4;
String name = "";

Animal(){}
Animal(byte Legs,String Name){
legs = Legs;
name = Name;
}

}

This is what I've always done in OOP (in Java at least). What have I done exactly? Is it wrong? I know I've created an object of Animal and constructors blah but yes. Can somebody please explain?

« on: February 23, 2008, 09:18:40 am »
On the train ride home yesterday, my friend was talking about some Chinese drama show and how good it is. I was like bleh no thanks. Anyway, he said just check out the OP and tell me what ya think. I was like fine...

Other Discussion / YouTube now has ads in the videos?
« on: December 28, 2007, 07:11:22 am »
I didn't think Google would actually do it. When YouTube was purchased, people were saying it'd be overrun with crappy Google advertisements. It did happen, and quite visibly in some areas... but people lived... and I was just now watching a... video which I won't name, and this came up:

That's GREAT.

Other Discussion / Vista SP1 Details...
« on: December 16, 2007, 06:33:11 am »
Quote
    * Adds support for new UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) industry standard PC firmware for 64-bit systems with functional parity with legacy BIOS firmware, which allows Windows Vista SP1 to install to GPT format disks, boot and resume from hibernate using UEFI firmware.

    * Adds support for Direct3D® 10.1, an update to Direct3D 10 that extends the API to support new hardware features, enabling 3D application and game developers to make more complete and efficient use of the upcoming generations of graphics hardware.

    * Adds support for exFAT, a new file system supporting larger overall capacity and larger files, which will be used in Flash memory storage and consumer devices.

    * Adds support for SD Advanced DMA (ADMA) on compliant SD standard host controllers. This new transfer mechanism, which is expected to be supported in SD controllers soon, will improve transfer performance and decrease CPU utilization.

    * Adds support for creating a single DVD media that boots on PCs with either BIOS or EFI.

    * Enhances support for high density drives by adding new icons and labels that will identify HD-DVD and Blu-ray Drives as high density drives.

    * Enhances the MPEG-2 decoder to support content protection across a user accessible bus on Media Center systems configured with Digital Cable Tuner hardware. This also effectively enables higher levels of hardware decoder acceleration for commercial DVD playback on some hardware.

    * SP1 addresses issues many of the most common causes of crashes and hangs in Windows Vista, as reported by Windows Error Reporting. These include issues relating to Windows Calendar, Windows Media Player, and a number of drivers included with Windows Vista.

    * An improved SRT (Startup Repair Tool), which is part of the Windows Recovery environment (WinRE), can now fix PCs unbootable due to certain missing OS files.

    * Improves the performance of browsing network file shares by consuming less bandwidth.

    * Improves power consumption when the display is not changing by allowing the processor to remain in its sleep state which consumes less energy.

    * Improves power consumption and battery life by addressing an issue that causes a hard disk to continue spinning when it should spin down, in certain circumstances.

    * Improves the speed of adding and extracting files to and from a compressed (zipped) folder.

    * Significantly improves the speed of moving a directory with many files underneath.

    * Improves performance while copying files using BITS (Background Intelligent Transfer Service).

    * 25% faster when copying files locally on the same disk on the same machine

    * 45% faster when copying files from a remote non-Windows Vista system to a SP1 system

    * 50% faster when copying files from a remote SP1 system to a local SP1 system

    * Improves responsiveness when doing many kinds of file or media manipulations. For example, with Windows Vista today, copying files after deleting a different set of files can make the copy operation take longer than needed. In SP1, the file copy time is the same as if no files were initially deleted.

    * Improves the copy progress estimation when copying files within Windows Explorer to about two seconds.

    * Improves the time to read large images by approximately 50%.

    * Improves IE performance on certain Jscript intensive websites, bringing performance in line with previous IE releases.

    * Improves the effectiveness of a Windows ReadyBoostâ„¢ device in reducing the time to resume from standby and hibernate by increasing the amount of data stored in the ReadyBoost device that can be used during a resume cycle.

    * Includes improvements to Windows Superfetchâ„¢ that help to further improve resume times, in many environments.

    * Improves the time to resume from standby for a certain class of USB Hubs by approximately 18%.

    * Improves overall media performance by reducing many glitches.

    * SP1 includes Secure Development Lifecycle process updates, where Microsoft identifies the root cause of each security bulletin and improves our internal tools to eliminate code patterns that could lead to future vulnerabilities.

    * Enhanced the BitLocker encryption support to volumes other than bootable volumes in Windows Vista (for Enterprise and Ultimate SKUs).

    * Adds full support for the latest IEEE draft of 802.11n wireless networking.

    * Allows users and administrators to control which volumes the disk defragmenter runs on.

    * Allows users and administrators using Network Diagnostics to solve the most common file sharing problems, not just network connection problems.

    * Enables support for hotpatching, a reboot-reduction servicing technology designed to maximize uptime. It works by allowing Windows components to be updated (or "patched") while they are still in use by a running process. Hotpatch-enabled update packages are installed via the same methods as traditional update packages, and will not trigger a system reboot.

    * Improves OS deployment by enabling 64-bit versions of Windows Vista to be installed from a 32-bit OS. This will allow IT professionals to maintain just a single WinPE image.
    * Improves overall install time for updates by optimizing the query for installed OS updates.

    * SP1 includes a number of changes which allow computer manufacturers and consumers to select a default desktop search program similar to the way they currently select defaults for third-party web browsers and media players.

    * With SP1, Windows Vista will report the amount of system memory installed rather than report the amount of system memory available to the OS.

    * SP1 reduces the number of UAC (User Account Control) prompts from 4 to 1 when creating or renaming a folder at a protected location. FINALLY!

    * Improvements in the Licensing User Interface and User Experience including more details in the help about activation and what happens if user does not activate; more detailed and descriptive dialog text; raw error codes replaced with easily comprehensible text.

    * SP1 modifies the text in the Ultimate Extras Control Panel to describe the Ultimate Extras program in more general terms.

    * While not reflected in the initial release candidate this week, we will also be making changes effective with SP1 in how we differentiate the experience customers have using non-genuine versions of our software. This is based on feedback we heard from volume license customers in particular as part of our Windows Genuine Advantage program.

    * Also coming with SP1 but not in the current release candidate, we will also be including updates that deal with two exploits we have seen, which can affect system stability for our customers. The OEM Bios exploit, which involves modifying system files and the BIOS of the motherboard to mimic a type of product activation performed on copies of Windows that are pre-installed by OEMs in the factory. The Grace Timer exploit, which attempts to reset the “grace time” limit between installation and activation to something like the year 2099 in some cases.

Well, it's no XP, but it is DEFINITELY better.

Right so, Halo 2 PC came out with Live functionality and exclusive to Vista for god only knows what reason *cough*money*cough*. That was a flop. Same with Shadowrun. It allowed cross platform play (well XB to PC) yet it was still Vista only and sucked.

One cracker cracked both of those games. I was thinking about getting them... and my friend got them instead. I borrowed the discs, and used the cd keys, but AFTER a crack. This meant the CD key was valid, but not activated.

In both H2PC and Shadowrun, I have had 5 people in one game using the same CD key. Great security.

Soooo, Microsoft obviously saw the stupidity (and lack of security) of the system and started using a "Startup" system, where the user must run the game using the startup.exe and the game exe with do all these random checksums. The two games to use this are Gears of War and Viva Pinata.

The same cracker got both of them too. I have tested both VP and GOW and they work with Live enabled.

Now here's the thing that is the WORST part. You'd think, as with any game, the cd key algorithm (or whatever) would be different for each product. Well, it's not. The Halo 2 PC cd key worked in all four games.

So, in short, MS just hasn't got it down, and me and my group of friends are enjoying online multiplayer at their stupid expense.

Entertainment / Interesting find in Viva Pinata?
« on: December 01, 2007, 01:47:48 am »
Well, I got Viva Pinata for PC (for free off a friend) and played for 3 hours. Then I realised I didnt create a save point so lost all the god damn progress. So I had to start again.

So today I loaded up and there are always loading hints as in any game... but this one caught my eye.

Can anyone tell me where they got the inspiration for that? ;)

Entertainment / Call of Duty 4 - Best shooter. Ever.
« on: November 11, 2007, 08:01:39 am »
Now, let me just clear some things. I'm a HUGE Halo, 2 and 3 fan, and they have great (yet disappointing) campaigns. I've played Battlefield (Vietnam, 2, you name it I've tried it). They all have great graphics. They are all great.

However, last night I slept over at a friend's house and found he had recently purchased Call of Duty 4. I had brought my 360 and he has a MASSIVE High Def TV. But before I played, we watched him play. The whole campaign.

The campaign is the most heart pounding and intense campaign ever. Infinity Ward paid attention to detail. Literally every act has a "holy !@#$%" moment. The graphics, sound, weapon balance, just... EVERYTHING is amazing. The characters are believable as well.

Then after watching him play for 8 hours straight, we 4 way'd multiplayer. We played that for another 8 hours. It was like... Halo's fun mixed with competition. Just a note because I can: I won every single game, team or not =D.

After about 20 hours after first seeing the start screen, I stopped and took a breathe. I said "10 out of 10 material" and everyone agreed. CoD4 is the ONLY game to ever have me play and love it so much.

Just a note, I have played and finished all Call of Dutys (only 2 on Veteran... which took forever).

Hell yes to CoD4. I'm off to play the campaign on Veteran.

Entertainment / Sex scene in Mass Effect...
« on: November 09, 2007, 07:36:16 am »
Right so, the Mass Effect game was always going to have a sex scene. I was NOT excited, in fact I was concerned it'd be banned from Australia. Then I heard it'd be possible to do girl-on-girl. It was even worse. Well, it's out, here it is:

http://www.xbox360fanboy.com/2007/11/08/video-mass-effect-girl-on-girl-lovin

There's no sex. You don't see anything. It is clearly sex, but... hmm. They could've taken it out since it's so pointless.

Discussion / ...Learning VB .NET =/
« on: November 09, 2007, 03:03:33 am »
So the "college" I'm going to next year teaches Visual Basic. NET and SQL Server 05, later followed by Java. Now Java I can handle, but VB .NET... Hmm.

I am fine in VB6, but I wiki'd VB .NET and found alot of differences. They aren't bad, but they'll !@#$% me off.

So anyway, does anybody know of a VB .NET learning website? =).

Entertainment / Doom-ish DS game?

Not sure if it's been posted. It looks like crappy repetitive garbage but others might be interested.

Also, something caught my eye. Why does it say under Similar Games, "Bratz: Forever Diamondz"?

Coding / Nearest object thing...
« on: October 15, 2007, 01:01:30 am »
Yea, just wondering, say you had a tree and 5 apples, and you wanted to find which apple was the closest of all 5. I was thinking instance_nearest, but it returns any object.

Ideas please?

LTTP & FSA / [Solved] Spice up this small area...
« on: October 14, 2007, 10:56:13 am »

I made it in paint in like, 5 seconds, and afterward was thinking "oh gee, wake up. Your unborn son could do better." So I came here...

Can anybody do anything to... spice it up? or make it more... detailed or something? I don't want it beyond 320x320, (but if you're volunteering go for it).

Credits of course.

Entertainment / So I gots my Zelda PH yesterday
« on: October 12, 2007, 04:09:37 am »
lol Australian Release Dates.

So I've been playing quite a bit (I even had a day off of Halo 3 for it...) and it's pretty awesome. The only thing is... after playing TP/WW a few times, and seeing the gameplay/complexity (in both story and map design) and coming to PH, it's kind of... childish? Don't get me wrong, I loved Wind Waker, it just seems they've made a cheesy story continuing from a great one.

So, the touch screen owns. But it does add to the "easy" factor. The amount of times I've randomly reached for the D-pad to start moving is amazing. Stupid Minish Cap. But they do use the touch screen and even microphone well.

The music... Again, after playing TP so much... just bleh? They've just remixed the Wind Waker themes and used them... and they sound pretty average. No OST for PH.

Story is average too. Maybe it's just that "Been there done that" feeling of Zelda, maybe it's finally getting to me. Not sure. That first cutscene, and the pirate ship was awesome. I thought maybe I'd get to visit some old people, but instead I get to boring islands.

Graphics? Great for the DS. Cutscenes are actually cutscenes. They did take Wind Waker's cartoony look and it's great.

I'm still into it, it's Zelda for crying out loud, but it just seems to be missing the "it" that made other Zeldas "it."

Entertainment / [possible spoilers]My Halo 3 Review
« on: September 27, 2007, 12:28:43 pm »
So, I got Halo 3 quite a few hours before the rest of the world. Before it I was at EBGames owning everyone in Slayer matches... wow some people are bad.

Anyway, I got it, and got to my friend's house and linked up our 360s for Co-op on Heroic (we wanted to have fun, Legendary we're saving for 4 player co-op). We finished the campaign in 6 hours, then played another 5 hours of multiplayer. Here's the scoring:

Graphics - 8/10. Not as good as promised. Still very epic at alot of points.

Music - 8/10. The past Halo games had great music that got the heart pumping. Halo 3 had basically none that achieved this, except in cut scenes.

Gameplay - 9/10. Great, same awesome style as the past two Halos. New weapons and stuff... awesome.

Campaign - 8/10. So it starts great, gets... great... but disappointing to hardcore Halo fans... then the final two levels are repetitive boring !@#$%. Second last is all Flood in about 500 rooms that look the same with 100 of the things running at you non-stop. The last is... just... very unoriginal. The ending was good though.

Multiplayer - 9/10. The maps range from medium to HUGE. Not very fun for small games. The game types, matchmaking system and all other features are unmatched though. You can have hours of non-stop fun in Halo multiplayer (one, two or three).

Final Thoughts - Nothing beats the FPS-defining Halo 1. Nothing beats the multiplayer and online abilities of Halo 2. Halo 3 took them both and made a great game.

9/10.
