Alright well out of the blue my browser just closed and my computer slowed down to hell. I could barley move around the mouse that's how bad it was.

So anyways I rebooted in safe-mode and it seemed fine, I did a system recovery and rebooted, then it was stuck on a black screen (the login screen didn't even appear) and my mouse cursor was moving extremely slow, like it was lagging, so I booted in safe-mode again and did another recovery to an earlier date.

I restarted it seemed to work fine, then all of a sudden it did it again, so I eventually got the Task Manager open after like 10 minutes and it said Winlogon.exe was taking up 100% and I couldn't end it of course cause it's an important system file.

Anyways, I rebooted and it did that stupid black screen thing again and now I'm in safe-mode again...

God damn help please.

Under Safe Mode with Networking, download Avast 4 and do a scan. Obviously Winlogin.exe some nasty !@#$% attached to it. If it doesn't detect anything, I suggest you begin backing up all important files and simply reformatting =\.

I'll try to help even though you're an opinion !@#$%. The process "winlogon.exe" runs in the background. It's a part of the Windows Login subsystem. Winlogon is necessary for user authorization and checks the Windows XP activation code. I found a similar scenario to yours here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/919578 And another: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822834 This one has a hotfix for Windows XP, and sounds most like your problem: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/912354 If these don't help, here's the google search I used to find them: http://www.google.com/search?q=site:support.microsoft.com+winlogon.exe&hl=en&start=10&sa=N It's also important to note that winlogon.exe could have a virus, or you have another virus disguised as winlogon.exe.

Well I'm going to try the last hotfix... but I have to wait within 8 business hours for microsoft to email it to me >_<

Also I'll try yours too GM.

First we need to see if there is a virus.

so go to http://us.mcafee.com/root/mfs/default.asp
do the scan
if anything comes up then go here http://us.mcafee.com/virusInfo/default.asp?id=vrt
and remove it <3

: D

if not try to replace "winlogon.exe" with another
