Just a thought, could also help people develop their ideas for their games.  My favourite aspect of a LoZ game has to be the bosses, they are just epic.  Or the dungeons in the Wind Waker, I really liked the temples.  So, just wondering what you guys think makes a Zelda game.

How immersive they are for being generic adventure games! Everybody likes seeing the underdog overcome the odds and come out on top! The games just give you an underlying satisfaction after every triumph :)

Humans are curious with a craving for collecting and achiement.
What makes the Zelda concept so great is the exploration, the many rewards (with items to collect, story advancement and even more exploration opened up) and overcoming all odds (with rescueing the princess, destroying evil and saving the world).

Solid concept.

What DJ and Martijn said. But I have to add that the main character Link is devoid of a personality. There are some facial expressions and reactions in the 3D versions, but in 2D versions reactions Link are only known by the text from other NPC's.

This void of personality allow players to project the psyche of their own choice on the main character.

A prevailing sense of wonder and adventure. A lot of other adventure games and RPGs get crushed under the weight of their own epic tales, filled with so much intrigue and violence and turmoil that they just don't feel fun anymore. Zelda has always been about fun first. That's why I love the series.

In my honest opinion, every zelda game needs a good story

Ehhhm, Zelda games are notorious for weak/absent stories…  Which is great, because story-intensive games = boring.

Well, since the theme of Zelda is Adventure, it's good that it conveys that. But Mario's theme is Fun sooo.... yeahh...

Games with good stories are a nice thing, but Zelda is not the place for an epic tale. A simple story of "boy saves princess" or "boy gets sword and saves world" is really all these games need.

A notable exception is Majora's Mask, which greatly fleshed itself out with the side quests. However, those served the purpose of immersion, not necessarily for the PURPOSE of telling a story.
