Speaking of liking System of a Down, Kienamaru, have you heard Serj Tankian's latest solo album? It's spectacular!

Well, if you never heard good country, you should listen to Creedence Clearwater Revival.

The reason most people dislike country is that they're hearing a very select slice of the genre, which is over-produced and has very generic-sounding guitars with ridiculous southern accents. The dudes don't actually talk like that in real life. But the point of that music is to appeal to people by agreeing with the words, not with the instrumental part.

I've heard some very good country music, and the genere has some incredibly talented musicians, particularly as far as violin (fiddle) goes. And some vocal harmonies matched only in barbershop quartets :p

But if you guys go back just like 60 years, rock and country were the same thing. You could, looking at it by today's standards, call lots of Elvis' music country. And if you go back just a little more, then you've got blues. One step back and you're in jazz, one step before that and you've got big bands. Devoting your life to rock music but not appreciating jazz or country is like liking vanilla coke but saying regular coke is worthless. You can do it, but really?

But liking things like country is different than appreciating it. I appreciate country music.
Personally, I can't listen to the stuff because I worked in a restaurant for a year that played only Country music.
It was aweful...

And I live in Nashville Tennessee. Home of the Country Music Hall of Fame.

As for the other guy no, I haven't listened to the solo album. As much music genres as I listen to I actually don't often seek it out.

... I've only heard one good rnb song. No good country songs, no good j pop, and no good jazz.

You've probably just heard all the wrong stuff. For an example: I absolutely abhor almost all country, though there are a select few that I actually really like. There is loads and loads of music out there. I bet you'd at least like some of the jazzy video game remixes on OCR (Overclocked Remix). I used to think of jazz as music for old "classy" and boring people. But that was based off of hearing crap on the radio. Later I heard some amazing jazz and I really love a lot of jazz out there now, since I gave it a chance.

As for j-pop: I've found that it tends to be pretty girly and the vocalists like to use the heavily auto-tuned style (like that ring-a-ding-ding song and "Sorry Sorry", ect, I think those are j-pop). But, there are some j-pop songs that I really like that aren't so girly. In order to judge a musical genre, you really have to hear all sides of it, and there is usually a lot of variation (a.k.a. sub-genres) within a genre.

Btw, right now I'm liking: Pendulum's "The Island - Pt. 1", "Witchcraft", and "Crush", Yui's "Life" (such a great song and vocals, used in Bleach at one point ;3), some K-ON (the instrumentals by Hyakkoku Hajime), FamilyJules7x's "Snow World" (Castle Crashers cover) and his Pokemon covers, C.N. Blue's "Oetoriya", "Love", "In My Head", and many others of theirs, Kawada Mami's "Joint" (used in many animes seriously overused but a good song) and "Intron Tone", May'n's "Chase the World" (used to be the intro song for the Accel World anime), Dream Theater's "On the Backs of Angels" and others, Philter's "8-Bit Smiles", Steve Chou's "Guan Bu Shang De Chuang" (the only song of his that I really like; just real a beautiful and musically interesting song, but the music video will ruin's it cuz it sux).. and there are many others. Of course I listen to the "Battle of Life" fairly often (from the Heartsrings OST Special album) and I'm always searching for any other rock songs like it.

EDIT:

Ah, almost forgot: Been listening to Utada Hikaru's "Simple and Clean (Planitb remix)" because I'm really into Kingdom Hearts again atm (Playing KH2 right now, because it is one of the most incredible games of all time, seriously). And, don't kill me, but I'm also liking Nightcore's "Dam Dadi Doo" song. XD

Contemporary R&B might stink, but classic R&B from the 50s and 60s is good stuff.

Hmm, if Simple and Clean remixed was somehow considered Jpop was good then that song was good. I have heard TONS of the stuff though, most J music just doesn't do it for me. (Coming from a FFR veteran) So i've heard loads of music. I like some Jrock, although the only songs I can think of are... "Into Free -Dangan-" by B'z (was used in Dragon's Dogma into) One of the Bleach openings, i forget which one. And I think 2 of the Naruto openings. Oh and JPop wise there was "Ring A Bell" on Tales of Vesperia by Bonnie Pink? That's about it.

Hmm, if Simple and Clean remixed was somehow considered Jpop was good then that song was good.

This appears to sum up any question about what music fits into the j-pop category:
Quote from: wikipedia
J-pop, an abbreviation for Japanese pop, is a musical genre that entered the musical mainstream of Japan in the 1990s. Modern J-pop has its roots in 1960s pop and rock music, such as The Beatles, which led to Japanese rock bands such as Happy End fusing rock with Japanese music in the early 1970s.[1] J-pop was further defined by New Wave groups in the late 1970s, particularly electronic synthpop band Yellow Magic Orchestra and pop rock band Southern All Stars.[2] Eventually, J-pop replaced kayōkyoku ("Lyric Singing Music", a term for Japanese pop music from the 1920s to the 1980s) in the Japanese music scene.[3] The term was coined by the Japanese media to distinguish Japanese music from foreign music, and now refers to most Japanese popular music.

I'm really into this kind of stuff right now:
<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RWX4i5l9vpk" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RWX4i5l9vpk</a><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=49Oi4mCv5G4" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=49Oi4mCv5G4</a>

You like any of those?

I see some people in this thread are really into very good bands, such as Pink Floyd, Opeth, Soundgarden, Dream Theater, etc. If anyone is interested in these bands and wants to hear my progressive metal band named Optic, check us out at our Facebook link! Our "Drown The Earth" EP is on the bandpage, but we have an album coming out at the beginning of 2013. We have other links to bandcamp.com, soundcloud.com, and youtube.com, but this is our strongest. Hope some of you check us out and enjoy :)

As for the jazz discussion, it is easily one of my favorite genres to listen to, be involved with, try to introduce people to, and teach my students. It is a very overlooked genre and even looked upon by some people as some form of musical corruption. This us unfortunate because it was a musical movement and evolution that eventually began to influence not only musicians and music itself, but the personalities of others and even certain aspects of society as well as culture. Whether it is big band swing, bebop, straight-ahead jazz, or any other sub-genre of the jazz idiom, the genre continues to reach out to musicians and listeners in one way or another and continues to be alive to a certain degree whether it's through performances at small club gigs, albums in record stores, jazz venues/clubs, and at huge jazz festivals in various locations around the world (especially every summer in Nice, France).

In response to the statement of not hearing any good jazz artists or musicians, check out John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Miles Davis Quintet, Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, Bill Evans Trio, Chick Corea, Count Basie, Buddy Rich Big Band, Lee Morgan, Freddie Hubbard, Charlie Parker; just name but a few for now. Hope all of these details and list of musicians helps   :D

Oh man, I could go on forever about the genres/songs/artists I'm interested in, so it's probably easier to say what I'm not much of a fan of. Which is in general (there'd be exceptions, I just haven't really found them) country, rap, metal/any over distorted guitar and heavy drums. And that's about it for the well known sort of genres. I guess you can say I've slipped more into electronic music over the last few years, but I still like a lot of acoustic stuff too. Orchestral's one of my favorite, particularly the stuff by Two Steps From Hell, some of that sounds amazing.
As for things like dubstep, I do like but not the heavy stuff that doesn't have a melody.
Anyway, here's a few of my current favorites:

Well, as I said before, I listen my country's music. As there is good music on US/UK, also here in Argentina. Like Vox Dei. They did sing the Bible (just to mention some of the most important albums). So, I'll guess I'm leaving a good song:

Checked it out. Everything is really good. Only one problem: While it's mixed fairly well, it could be better. It seems like it's not EQ'd properly, as if you have too many bleeding/overlapping frequencies and it's slightly muddied and dulled because of it. It just needs a bit more clarification some how. I'm not a professional mixer by any means, but I tried it on my PC speakers and my AKG's and came to this conclusion. It could also be that it needs more compression, because it sounds pretty balanced and clear on my AKG's, but on my PC speakers it loses a noticeable amount of punch in the drums and clarity in the vocals. As I said, I'm no professional mixer, but one thing I do know for certain is that a good mix will sound good on practically any set of speakers, be it a car sound system, home entertainment system, cheap in-ears, etc.

Besides that though, good stuff! I'm not a big fan of screaming or whatever you'd call it, but I love the vocals that don't scream. And the guitar work and arrangements are very nice.

EDIT:

Also, I love this right now:
<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9gajD7rrp3s" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9gajD7rrp3s</a>

I've always thought that for the most part, I've been pretty open-minded when it comes to the music I like to listen to.

I didn't really start exploring what I like about music until I was around 15 years old (seriously). Before then, I was just content to listening to what other people were listening to. At some point, though, I started looking into music myself. In particular, I began to like electronic music more and more.
For a few years I only listened to trance music just because I liked how it sounded. I never kept track of names. After a while, I started looking at more genres. I've found that I don't have one favorite genre or group of genres. There are times when I go from mostly listening to hardcore to mostly listening to calm ambient music. (Calm isn't the only kind of ambient...) Lately I've been looking into the very broad breakbeat genre. Some people that have heard me listen to these songs have told me it's like hip-hop music without the rapping.

I'm always looking out for experimental stuff. I end up liking it sometimes. It's experiemental, so there's no telling what exact type of music it'll be.

I guess I'm still the same as I was many years ago. I don't care much for artists or genres. If it sounds good to me, I'll keep on listening to it.

Edit: I'm done messing with links, I swear.

My music tastes like a Banana Split, with loads of vanila ice cream and some hot chocolate sauce coveredd in some nuts. To finish it of a big pile of whip cream and a cherry on top. 8) :P

All funny stuff aside, I don't think I really have a favorite genre. Although R&B, Soul and Rap do not have as much songs that I like. If it is retty much mainstream, then I would probably like it. Although some lesser known music as well.

I listen to pretty much everything and anything but my preference goes to Metal music (I don't like using sub-genres). Some of my favorite bands include Wintersun/Ensiferum/Sonata Arctica ('til Reckoning Night) and Children of Bodom. My personal fave is Symphony X, Michael Romeo is a pure musical genius.  I also enjoy things like Iron Maiden, Praying Mantis,Hammer.... and well the BIG4 stuff too! And Ozzy :D

I think the main reason why jazz isn't listened to by lots of people is that it's kind of hard to get into right off the bat. If I listened to classic rock and metal, and somebody handed me some John Coltrane, I'd be like, "ahh, you must thing I'm a rich old dude".

Jazz for me came as a progression of listening to Pop Rock (like the Pink Spiders, Semisonic) and happening across Ska (in the form of Reel Big Fish). I liked the brass and upbeat quality, which got me into swing music (Big Bad Voodoo Daddy) (where I stumbled across electro swing, whole different, and awesome, genre). There aren't too many contemporary swing acts out there, and one I found (Ben Soul), played Motown Style stuff. This led right into jazz, especially guitarists like Wes Montgomery. And their awesome guitar skills led me to listen to other awesome guitarists, which took me full circle back into classic rock.

Anyway, some awesome contemporary jazz that's easier for somebody who doesn't like jazz:
