Time for discussion time again! This time, it's about an rpg's graphical theme

When we think if rpgs, we think of detailed landscapes. But with Fable's rise to fame years back, it now comes to a question what style suits it best?

The Detailed Cartoonish style of Fable
The Detailed Realistic style of Oblivion
The Simplistic Cartoonish style of Windwaker
The Simplistic Realistic style of Skyward Sword (Im thinking of Link here)

What do you think? Time to discuss!

RPG's are a form of Storytelling, the kind of Style you use is bound on what system you use for the RPG and which kind of Story you tell

There's no "one" style which suits an RPG best. Out of those examples you have, I think the Wind Waker had the best style, because it was new, and the it was constructed within well defined artistic rules.

but wind waker was not the right zelda style after OoT and the Spaceworld Demo...

they were right to use a cartoonish style for a childish rpg like zelda, but like said it wasn't expected from the crowd to come after OoT and Spaceworld... withouth those two it would have been the perfect zelda style after the top down one ;)

then: twilkight princess were more "adultish" but too much for a zelda... so skyward sword is the perfect match between those two i guess

For an RPG, I would say any style. Just as any style would fit a platformer, fighting or an FPS.

Any style could become a good RPG. However, extremely realistic high-graphic ones tend to be more epic just because of the lifelike feel to it.

I disagree, any simplistic or cartoonish looking, can be really epic as well. How epic the game is depends on how the story is told and unfolds, how the gamemechanics are and the entire picture in graphics and sound. Granted crappy graphics will probably hurt the epicness of a game. But just because the graphics are realistic does not mean its epicness increases.

In movies take for example Disney's Lion King. It is a handdrawn cartoon and the drawings are far from realistic. And yet it still counts as one hell of an epic movie. Way more better than the gross of live action movies hollywood produces. In games ALttP has some outdated graphics but in epicness it still ranks among the top, being a shitload better than current games with photorealistic graphics and gore.

Yes, like Tales of Symphonia.  (One of the few RPGs I actually liked.)
