I like my "mode" idea better, tight butthole. It makes sense to make it somewhat of an event-bound variable because these types of enemies are intended for level design purposes. They don't fit anywhere else.

Maybe we can use them for sidequests. Also, I have my damn Mechanoid Fish, and I'm thinking a couple more (not variations, so calm down).

Can we explore GM's mode idea a little more?  I'd like to see what we can do with that, particularly what causes an npc to go into this mode.

If you mean that Kamikase is a state, I'd also go for that. It can be that if they're damaged enough, that one hit more kills them, they become Kamikaze, just if the player waits too much to kill that certain ChuChu/Keese. I mean, you have 5 chuchus attacking you, and you hurt one, that with just one more hit you kill it, and for certain amount of time, you don't kill it, its color change, and goes "running" faster than the others to explodonate (borrowed this idea from Plant's vs Zombies  XD) next to you. I don't know if you want it to also kill anything close to the player.
