I was making some avatars out of images from various flash videos. The Ruto one sucks, and you can see I made a Link one from my avatar. (Taken from The Real Legend 3) I do, however, have a Goron one.

And so this topic doesn't go to waste by me just giving out a free avatar for anyone to use, I'll keep doing this if anyone requests anything from a certain flash or video, etc.

Please do not take what I am about to say offensively.

First off, having inconsistent sizes for avatars is slightly annoying. They're all different sizes. You should see what the standard size is on the boards before making different sized avatars.

Second, the Goron one looks slightly half-assed. It's not centered properly and it looks a lot like part of the top of his head is cut off. You should allow more space on the left so that it doesn't look like the image was cut too close.

I'm not going to mention the Ruto one because you yourself think it sucks.

Yeah, that's just what I think. I mean, the size thing can be laid off but the clipping can't :P. It's generally good to focus on an aspect of the image for the avatar. You could've easily just focused on the Goron's face, or Ruto's face for those avatars.

I really only did this cuz I was bored. I did the Goron and Ruto with the whole body because (IMO, anyway) it adds to the humor. Why would I take constructive criticism offensively?

Ah, just because some people do. :)

I guess in a sense it does kind of add to the humor. Just make sure you crop the images properly.

Yeah, here's basically what I think when I look at my work in the mirror, to put it.

1. Printscreen isn't a good thing to use if you want to make "professional" avatars.
2. JPG makes things too pixely when you resize it.
3. Center the piece you're trying to capture.
4. Make the avatar a standard size, not all stretchy and out of proportion.

Print screen isn't that bad. It just depends on how you crop the image.

I disagree entirely. It depends on the size of the image. Even if you have a PNG file that's small, you'll still get pixelly results when making it bigger. That's just the general rule of resizing.

3. Center the piece you're trying to capture.

Good. That's a very good point. You always need to center your point of interest, unless you're seriously trying for a crazy art form.

Again, good. Generally it's best to keep them square sizes. I find the standard usually is 100x100 (pixels). On MSN they're about 96x96.

What? Who dares stop my ranting, huh?

Anyway, I thought jpg was the odd one out because it caused color distortion?

Any good image program lets you choose the quality when you save a jpg.  Set it to 100 and it will have very minimal distortion.  PNG still looks better though.

PNG certainly looks better for things like avatars and just general web graphics, I find. I like to turn to JPG though when it comes to saving my artwork.
