He makes some very good points, and I have to say I agree with him on pretty much all of them.

God Delusion is actually an interesting read, and a book I recommend to anyone with the money to buy it, Atheist, Christian, Hindu or Muslim.

If a religious person cannot challenge their own belief, they are (lets face it) as far as I can percieve, a willing and knowing victim to their own delusional creations.

And Christians, will you please, pretty please, with sugar on top, stop implying that the atheist lifestyle is one long drug-riddled blood orgy? You take a country like Japan, where just 12% of the people say religion is important to their lives and yet have some of the lowest crime rates in the world.

They also have some of the highest tentacle porn and guro rates in the world.

I've seen this guy's site before and he's made a ton of wrong assumptions... In this case he makes a point I agree with but for reasons that I don't.

Who cares what my reasons are. It's just the internet. :P

Have you seen Dawkins' The Root Of All Evil? I've wondered how the tone and approach of God Delusion (never read it) compares to that film..

Why do you have to challenge a belief to be intelligent?  (Yes, I'm challenging that belief of yours right now.)  Quite honestly, anyone who's obsessive enough to break other people's faith is just trying to build themselves up to bring others down.

It's pointless, reckless, destructive and does nobody any good... well, except it will give such obsessive confrontational athiests an ego boost.

But this was an interesting read.  I disagree with it on some level, but it wasn't hateful like I thought it might be and brought out some valid, good points that common sense should tell us all.

So I think you've got a point Dascu, but would you get over the "I hate hyrule_boy" thing (reffering to your shot at him in the title)?  As much as it all made us "lol" (::)), I'm sure I'm not the only one that finds it mildly hypocritical/freakin' annoying.

oh, I half-wrote that as an edited on tag-line without thinking it through (I've been standing up for practically 9 hours none stop for the love of Microsoft, I'm allowed to not think things through!). I meant the people who you suggest the book as an interesting read that could challenge their beliefs, and they instantly go on a bitchy rant about how they believe to strongly to challenge it (which makes no sense to me). Not just your average dude-religious-guy who actually looks at all angles before putting it down to devine fact (two words which seem to cancel each other out a lot XD). Don't ask me why I put down "lets face it", I blame it on having to wake up an hour earlier every morining, and stand up for many hours at a time because of work experience.

Their are two kinds of people. Those who when you ask about their belief, and they say
"It is a belief based on my own experiences, and the current evidence I have experienced at the time, and may change."
and those that say
"It is an unchanging belief regardless of any evidence."

Which would you rather be? ;) and trust me, their are people like the latter. A scary amount as well...

Also notice when I try to make a point I generally include something along the lines of "In my opinion", "I think", or "as far as I can percieve.". These are great in debates because they make allowence for other people to accept that it is your belief that you are stating, without it seeming like you are trying to pressure it on other people as an absoulte fact.

Honestly, that's weak.  Beliefs can change, yes.  But fundamental truths don't.  When you get bogged down with the little things, you confuse black and white, because black and white mixing together makes EVERYTHING look grey.

Now I can understand the subjectivity of life, morals, etc. but when you start challenging conventional beliefs, you become a sociopath. :P

Trying to edit a sentance to match a different context while sleep-deprived is hard...

perhaps the word Belief was a bit strong? "View" probably matches better...just take whatever fits for you, I'm too tired to think. I'm gonna play some pokemon and then sleep. Yes, I'm so tired I will play pokemon!!!

Idiots come in all kinds of packages.

And I think it's just that the stupid ones are the ones who make the most noise. I doubt the majority of christians are stupid.

Actually, I think most people find it freakin' hilarious, as opposed to freakin' annoying. But don't let me get off topic. On with the rest of the post.

Challenging beliefs is definetely NOT pointless. In fact, we should challenge any belief we come across. Criticism will help shaping up these beliefs which will bring them closer to the 'one truth'.

Honestly, that's weak.  Beliefs can change, yes.  But fundamental truths don't.

It was believed to be a fundamental truth that the earth was flat a long time ago, due to the evidence and experiences people had back then.  It seems like common sense now that it isn't, but before people knew how gravity worked, it seemed foolish to think that the sky was on the other side of the ground too.

What are fundamental truths really, but beliefs based on strong evidence.  You could say it's a fundamental truth that people need to breathe to survive, but a scientist might do an experiment where they show an alternate way to provide oxygen to the body, perhaps science might eventually go so far as to be able to make it so oxygen isn't needed at all.  Seems foolish to think so right now though, doesn't it?

I guess my point is, it's impossible to truly say that anyone is right or wrong about religion.  You can debate about whether heaven exists or not all your life, but you won't be able to prove anything until you're dead.

That's because you're mixing up "scientific theories" with "fundamental truths".  We're not talking rocket-science.  We're talking "the sky looks blue".  "I'm a human being."  Etc.

Then I don't see why you brought up fundamental truths at all.  Can you explain what you were talking about?

HyruleBoy is the most deluded and closeminded fool I've met on this forum. He certainly needs to read this and, hopefully, learn from it. Also, how is it hypocritical? I never claimed to be perfect. I like presenting different views and ideas, but if I refrain from saying I believe those visions myself. Call me a Socrates or Devil's Advocat.

Also, on your other point, as Neo mentioned, you do need to challenge common beliefs from time to time. Not necessarily with the intention to destroy those beliefs and create a new system in the way you envision them (that's a sociopath), but to remain critical,to prevent a narrowminded view on society and to be open for positive change.

Oh, and finally, to Goodnight:
I've seen this guy's site before and he's made a ton of wrong assumptions... In this case he makes a point I agree with but for reasons that I don't.
Two things:
- His site is usually just sarcastic, a bit like Maddox' site. So, you should certainly take what he says with a pinch of salt (or is that grain of salt?).
- What are your reasons then? (yes, we're the Spanish Inquisition, bet you didn't expect us here)
