Title: Should I save the fly?
Post by: CoNfUsEd_GaMeR on July 24, 2006, 06:21:48 pm
Haha this fly just flew into a spiders web in the corner of my window, it's buzzing like crazy as it tries to escape - but to no avail.

The spider keeps hitting it or something with its legs. It's pretty fun to watch haha. don't normally get to see stuff like this.

So what would be the morally right thing to do? :P Free the fly or let it die.

let nature take it's coarse. flies only live for a day, anyway.

Save the fly!  Let him a few more hours!

Depends on the fly. Flies with mouthparts live a long time, and some flies without mouthparts still live up to three days.

There's still the whole reproducing business....

As a buddhist I say "SAAAAAAAAAAAVE THE FLY", except the spider might starve. Hmm.

3-1 to 'LEt the spider eat the fly'?! You sick animals!

...Yes, I voted for it too...but still...

I guess I'm the minority.   :-\

well, do you want the spider to starve?

"Let them eat cake."

Or other bugs, flys don't live that long anyway.

Let them eat cake.

that doesn't make any sence to this discussion.  :-\

Considering that the spider already has the fly, and that if you killed the spider it would still be caught, or if you tried to get the fly out of the web it would be injured, I would say that you should let the spider eat te fly.  No use in trying to help resulting in both dying.

Kill them both!

j/k

Nah, I say the fly should die. It's natural.

The fly will reincarnate into something else with a higher probability to reach Nirvana. Or maybe that was Hinduism <_< >_>?

The reincarnation dealie is both, but nirvana is the buddhist thing. But that's only if the fly's been good in life.

Who knows?  You do not have a cat that would eat both do you?  If I had to guess anything it would either be kill both or let the spider eat on.

I'm pretty sure Nirvana was Buddhism...?

Yes, I was too. It was the reincarnate thing I was wondering about...

Considering that you are on the Internet, why do you not just go into Wikipedia and check instead of waiting for non-specialists to tell you?

Reincarnation is a concept that applies to many religions and theologies: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reincarnation

Yeah, the reincarnation concept is identical in both. Historically speaking, both buddhism and hinduism have very similar origins, and therefore there are some things in them that are shared.

It was mostly to prevent me from sounding like an expert, not that I didn't know completely. Nevermind

It's nice to talk about things as a community.

There is no shame in going to Wikipedia for information.  And showing others a good source helps them to use it and brings more intelligence to the forum.  When people act like they know what they are talking about and yet they are unsure, reassurance is good for their ego and their post.

I know, I was trying to find a good excuse.

Uhm.. I really hope you don't think I think that. I use wikipedia at least once a day <.< I just didn't in this case because since Pyru seems to know his stuff he could answer it as much as he could write and be the author of the article on Wikipedia, no?

ooooooh! .. Chain of death.

...I don't tolerate harm to insects; I use the excuse that its more challenging to remove them from my room safely.

Plus if you tried to get it out, you might cause damage to the web, while this annoying fly buzzes around your head.

It doesn't matter about the fly. They survive by laying much, much too many eggs. I'm sure people here have seen those statistics about the number of flies that would exist if none died. One was: "Two flies, breeding in March, would have 19,000,000,000,000,000,000 decendants by the end of July assuming none died."

Yes, that would be true if you didn't lay trillions of off-spring. Kill the fly, I like spiders move then flys so do it now. Smite it god.
