No wonder why most western developed games have a similar aesthetic.

  • I just saved Hyrule! I'd say that's worth a kiss.

I dont really object. Developers could spend time and money making nice looking trees, or spend that time and money on other more important parts of the engine.

Ah a non-programmer complaining about how developers take shortcuts on programming :P hmm fancy that :P

Anyway; theres no issues with this. Stuff like this takes considerable amounts of time in development. I'm confused as to why you're not ragging on developers for using full scale engines for their games...

It was inevitable.  So many developers want realistic graphics; now that there's a program to make ultra-realistic trees, why would anyone try to re-invent it when they could use what's already there?

DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOP.

Sorry, had to.

Anyways, even though I guess it cuts time, how hard is it to model a few trees and copy and paste. Also nb4 OMG YOU KNOW NOTHING ABOUT MODELING, MAPPING, etc.

Who cares.

Harder than having someone else do the work for you.  >.>

SpeedTree is a highly effective engine that has been worked on for a long time. If you expected developers to recreate this from scratch, it would add at least a year to the products development time.

Not only does it render the trees, it handles a lot more about them. If these trees were just the models rendered over and over again, FPS would drop so low it'd make you suicidal. Instead, SpeedTree uses several algorithms and tricks to optimise the code. Simplest things it does is by reducing the polycount of the trees and eventually turning them into 2D renders. But it does a lot more than this.

The problem has nothing to do with that. Modelling the tree is incredibly easy. The problem comes with both repetition (you don't want to see the same tree everywhere do you?), and speed, drawing thousands, possibly millions for large forests, of polygons worth of trees slows things down. It takes a lot of effort to optimize something like that, its easier and faster for a developer to use middleware.

Most western developed games have the same aesthetic because they're all developed with the same 4 words in mind. "GUNS GOOD, KILL !@#$%." This is why any game that doesn't feature some burly half-mechanical man toting a huge ass gun gets deemed "revolutionary".

Reminds of a very similar Unity project that was finished a while ago. UniTree it was called. It randomly generates about three different types of trees that look exactly the same for every Unity developer to use.
