Trust me, its easy to have spent around 2000-3000 hours total on Pokémon if you've played them all through once.

Honestly, though, some people here are kinda a bit freaky :P
But my playstyle was typically pretty direct-- I'd just get a couple really powerful pokemon up  to high levels; I never really leveled up most of the pokemon I owned.  Hell, I didn't even bother to catch very many pokemon.  Also, I remember cheating in red/blue a LOT.

Well, cheating could lower your completion time, depending on what it is you did. Actually, let me do the straight math.

I'll assume that Red takes 70 hours to beat, Gold 100, Ruby 100, Pearl 120. Hmmm... Okay, so 390 hours total, I was waaaaaay wrong. But when you consider playing each individual version... 1240 hours if played through each version... 1390 hours if you include the two remakes for GBA at 75 hours each. I get a little closer to my estimate (although not too close. My estimating skills lack skill).

I know that but I'm talking about "not in Japan" third version because we never got Green and got blue so Yellow would be our third.

That's not really applicable at all, since we got Fire Red and Leaf Green. Not Fire Red and 'Ocean Blue' :P

It's also not applicable because Pokémon is a Japanese-made game. Nintendo of Japan will not care if America got Blue but not Green. They will care if we got Yellow as our third installment. They will first cater to their Japanese audience and then to the rest of the world. We pretty much get what the Japanese get, as long as the Japanese liked it a lot enough for it to be localized at other places.

True, technically, Nintendo of America (and other places, but I'll speak from an American PoV since it's going to be easier on me) could have decided to change the cart's color and the game's title to Ocean Blue (Why not Water Blue?) and released it like that. But that meant having to make another set of colored cartridges, making changes to the inner game itself (so Blastoise could appear instead of Venasaur and then color it blue instead of green). A company may not want to invest in that kind of thing. Figures that if you wanna play the game, you'll have to play it how they say you want to play it.

Wasn't the whole reason you could target because you have a fairy? Also, I'd like to be able to not detarget after I receive my information. I'd like Navi to tell me what I can do to beat up the enemy so I can then beat up the enemy. Never turn your back on your enemy!!

There's always that one person who will see you playing on your Gameboy/Advance/DS and ask that stupid question. What's funny is, my Gameboy was the transparent purple one, so you COULD see what game I was playing. Usually I'd play Link's Awakening and people would stupidly ask the question. Gawd.

I loved Yellow just because you start off with Pikachu and it can follow you around, to boot.

Meh, why buy guides when gamefaqs is free and the game's aren't that hard to figure out? But yes, I know which guide you're talking about. It's about as fat as a slim textbook.

Hahaha, back in my senior year of High School, I brought a (semi-portable) boombox and like four themes Pokémon decks. I picked out the open air, middle table, put in my custom, one-track CD of the classic Pokémon battle theme, and my friend and I just started playing the Pokémon Trading Card Game right in the middle of the the open-air lunch patio. Like a dozen people looked at us playing Pokémon TCG. I actually helped bring the game back to popularity like I never saw it before at my high school. It only lasted a month or two, maybe more, but it still fun.

That made me laugh SO hard! Are you serious? That's so freaking epic!

I'm serious. Unfortunately, I don't have any pictures from the time and I don't know if anyone took pictures of us playing. I like to say the whole idea was mine, but then again, I guess if my friend hadn't been as crazy as he was, I might not have caved in and done it. I honestly felt a little embarrassed carrying that boombox around, but after hearing all the passerbys talk about how awesome or oldschool it was what we were doing, I guess I felt a little better. I guess my friend and I just burst everyone's "I'm too old for Pokémon" bubble and everyone just realized that, "Hey, I still love my [insert favorite Pokémon here]!"

I don't think I'd pull such a stunt ever again though. XD Everyone was looking at us play and I'm not that great at the Pokémon TCG, mostly due to lack of cards. Still, I did beat my friend once with a Pikachu (4 regular Pikachus and 4 LT. Surge's) themed deck.

Which version did you play? My game's camera kept getting in the way (as in, I'm trying to figure where I am but all I'm seeing is the guy's crotch or head), the horse would, on occasions, move to the sides without me telling it to.

Good times... Good times.

Mammy, you just made me sad :P.

lol no gurlz on interwebs

I guess I'm not real.
I was just comparing how long it took for Pokémon to get its player gender selection to the stupid internet meme (is it really a meme?) that there supposedly aren't any girls online. *shrug* Didn't mean to offend anyone.

Man, back in the day, I used to play Pokemon SO MUCH...until it was banned from school (elementary school). It was so serious that when I was drawing a picture of Gengar, they confiscated it. I was so pissed.

I shouldn't really say back in the day because I still play Pokemon (played over 40 hours of Pearl, and have yet to really crack into Platinum...at the third gym). I'm a big dork.

Dang. Your school must've been pretty strict if they took the time to recognize what a Pokémon was just to prevent you from drawing it. Tch, I would draw Pokémon all the time too.

And don't worry. Most people who try to not be dorky by saying that they're too old for Pokémon are probably the first ones out there buying the newest games (that is, after Mammy's done).

Playing Pokemon is pretty much the most un-dorky thing you can do.

Like when pretty much everyone in my grade got really into Pokemon last year. That was amazing and intense.

Hahaha, High School... I should've more the most out of it, yet this is all I really have show for it.

Dangit, Mammy beat me to it. Yeah, in Japan, Red and Green then Blue was the special "third" version (which at the time, just put in the sprites from Red to Blue because green's sprites were bad, apparently).

I think I've clocked 100 hours in Silver... Maybe around the same or less in Diamond. I don't play the games that extensively. I guess I must've played (Fire)Red, Blue, and Yellow like a total of 300 hours at least. Can't tell you for real, though.

I don't know how long it took me to beat Sapphire/ Emerald, but I guess in total, it may have been around 120 hours.

I'll probably get Soul Silver if I ever get it.

Still, nice piece of work you got there, DJvenom.

Hmm... The controls aren't bad at all, I think. There might be a few teeny tiny things that could have better, at times (nothing I can think of off the top of my head right now), but nothing terrible.

I just beat Shadow of the Colossus. Try that out for horrible control/camera experience. Woo.

I remember back in the olden days, woman didn't have rights to pokeman.

They did; they were just tomboys with boy-like hair and clothing... Coincidentally, your own mother (in game, that is) didn't know you're actually a girl, so I guess girls playing Pokémon were really just boys in disguise.

lol no gurlz on interwebs

(Actually, a lot of girls did play Pokémon back in the day, at least, relative to the gender ratio for video game players... That's just how big Pokémon was.)

I always liked seeing my name in the game ^^ 'twas a simple minded and childish joy and something in me (possibly my innocence) will die if they removed it :(

I always name Link after me. I rarely ever call him Link, and if I do, it's for another playthrough which I leave undone after the first dungeon.

Voice overs were done for the US (and I suppose, European) release of Dragon Quest and I was impressed how they managed to work around the naming thing by just not saying your name and the message still sounded coherent. In DQ Swords, you were given a nickname although I suppose in Japanese, it would have been easier to make characters say your name... Hmm.

I prefer the Crystal girl, but whatever... If I get this chances are, I'll play as a guy anyhow.

...I have a friend who likes playing as a girl... His reason was that he'd rather stare at a girl's butt than a guy's butt... ...Good reason, I guess, but I like making the character my own avatar.

Dunno why I said that, btw. Just came out.

Graphics / Re: Pixel-Art or Tileset?
« on: May 05, 2009, 06:22:44 pm »
You can always use both. You can use tilesets for unimportant areas and use pixel art for more important areas, or cinematic areas.

Either way, why don't you make the game first using random, kinda-how-you-want-it graphics, and then, finally bring in the graphics you want? That's a tip I heard from someone around here. I usually don't focus too much on graphics, since I just want to make the game...

There's Pokemon Battle Revolution for the Wii already. I doubt that there'd be a remake of game that has already been "surpassed" or even remade, if you wanna argue that.

I just hope that Kanto is still in the remakes. Part of what I liked about Gold and Silver (and Crystal) was that you could go to Kanto and do the gyms out of order and then battle against the one character you supposedly played as in Red/Green/Blue/Yellow. I had nerdgasms when I battled him.
